Tall thin Snow tires for 14" rims

I have 14" steelies from my civic and I like to put snow tires on them on the cheap. I heard 14" was better for snow than 15" and that has been my experience in the past. What size tire should I get, I need tall and thin as I am lowered on TRD springs. Expensive snow tires aren't in the budget.

Anyone know where to find odd balls like:

155-75-14 or 165/75-14 cheap before the fall season drives prices up?


If not what is a good compromise size?

the diameter of the wheel has nothing to do with the snow-worthiness.

I've always had better luck with small skinny tires in the snow. My jetta had 13" rims and would drive by SUVs in the ditch. I'm coming up with nothing on the tire-rack

I saw those, Those are all 23" tires, with TRD drop they would look rediculous?

I need to be close to 24"s

165/75/14 would not only fill the wheel well better but it would do better in the snow, the thinner the tire the better on hills in Pennsylvania.

I saw some for sale a few weeks ago but can't find them now.

Michelin X Ice 175/70/14 $47.

Its ashame the 165 size has been abandoned, I guarantee you that a skinny rim climbs snow covered hills better.


Thanks for the discussion. I agree that tire diameter doesn't affect snow performance, but typically a smaller diameter wheel will take a skinnier tire. See where I am coming from now?

Yes, narrow (skinny) tires perform best in snow (See World Rally Cars). That said, Tamago is correct. Rim diameter isn't a factor.
I have snows on 14's for my sedan. They're too short when combined 175/65/14 snows and the TRD drop. Much problems last winter getting through my commutes.
I'm looking for taller rubber for the 14's or a 15" set-up for next winter.

It is a factor in that you can get a less wide wheel in a smaller diameter generally easier.

The tires are actually bigger than my 15"s because they're 175

run 175-65-14 and 185-60-14 on the yaris and aveo in winter....never had any problems

Hmmm... Still smaller diameter than the 185/60-15 that comes stock on most new Yarii. Not by much, though. :smile:

185/60-15 = 23.74"
175/70-14 = 23.65"

Hankook make the i*pike_w409 in 165/65R14. That's what I wanted to buy but they nobody had them in stock in my area. If you order some now, you probably can get them before the winter :laugh:
