View Full Version : Shoes for driving/racing...
So, do you have any special shoes for driving or racing? I would assume some people who do legitimate racing would, and maybe some others.
I have got a pair of Puma Urban Racers. absolutely the BEST shoes I have ever owned for gripping the clutch pedal when shifting. Every other pair of shoes I have has slipped the toe of my foot off the clutch pedal leaving me pressing it with the middle of my foot, but not these.

Is that a Ferrari badge on the side?

I never bothered getting racing shoes for autocross or track play until I was required to have fire-retardant shoes by race regs. A shoe that inspires confidence and fits both your foot and the pedal spacing of the car is very important for track driving, though. I like a wide shoe for some cars... like the Yaris before I put a wide pedal cover on the accelerator. Most racing shoes are pretty narrow.
I've heard that indoor soccer shoes are sometimes a good inexpensive alternative to racing shoes if you don't have a fire retardant requirement.

In the motorsport of hypermiling we usually drive barefoot (or in socks in the winter) so that we can make fine pedal adjustments. For example, changing the throttle pedal pressure by just 1% of the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) is much harder to do with shoes on.

Yeah, remember me in my flip flops trying to reduce the throttle position by 1? LOL.
I play Initial D barefooted though. LOL.

I think the guy that drives the green NST AE86 (*Willard?) wears regular skater shoes. If its good enough for him, its gotta be good for me.
In fact, I prefer to drive wearing my beat-up VANS and Chucks (Chuck Taylor, that is). However, I am not a racer, so i wouldn't know proper racing shoes.

In some States it's illegal to drive barefoot or in socks. You must wear either shoes or sandals in Pennsylvania or face a pretty healthy fine. Forewarned for those who hypermile across our state.
I agree that it's quite difficult to precisely adjust the TPS using shod feet. I will dig the outside of my right boot into the carpet and "wedge" it into the pedal to make those accurate adjustments.

I usually use work boots or work shoes, and on occasion a decent pair of sandals when I drive. A sharp mind, crisis experience with what you're using at the time and quick reactions are probably more useful than what sort of shoes you put on your feet.

I had a set of Ferrari Puma's, I bought along with a matching jacket. Awesome shoes, light, super nice heel, and had a carbon fiber heel with some suede.
I like em, and amazingly enough, the girlies did too, LOL. I had a girl once believe I drove an actual Ferrari, and that it was at the dealership getting a tune up. Good times in college
