My ghetto exterior thermometer

I got tired of hearing my girlfriend complain that the Yaris did not have one of those outdoor digital thermometers like more expensive cars so I rigged up my own ghetto version

I used a Taylor wireless indoor/outdoor digital thermometer. The outdoor sensing unit I velcro'd to the fuse box cover.

I then ran the sensor wire to the bottom of the grill.

Voila! The outdoor sensing unit sends air temp every 53 seconds so you have to drive for at least 2 minutes to get an accurate reading. When you stop at a long light, the temperature could creep up due to being close to the radiator but when you start moving, the correct air temperature will eventually display on the interior unit.

You can mount the display unit anywhere. I happened to hook it on to my Bluetooth clip.

Thats a great idea.
But when your in conditions like this , do you really want too
know the outside temperature . took this yesterday on my way home .

Yep it is snow , and yes in the south Isand , it snows all the time in winter :thumbup:

neat but LT from personal experience that glue holding up the velcro pads is crap and will melt and your unit will end up somewhere in the engine bay, i suggest you find a more secure way of attaching it.

I've had really good luck with a type of velcro from Home Depot that is meant for automotive applications. So far, it hasn't run where I've used it on the dash. I'm keeping an eye on the engine bay because the temperatures hotter.

Doesn't your scangauge have intake or ambient air temp?:smile:

I believe that ScanGauge and my current data logger show intake air temp at the MAF. Since I don't have a cold air intake anymore, I was seeing some pretty hot intake temperatures. This allows me to see the temperature rise from ambient to the air temp that is passing through the MAF sensor.

I've got to figure out a way to get ambient air to my intake or find a way to vent the hood. :)

But where is the actual temperature sensor? How much did the whole setup cost you?

The temp. sensor is clipped to the bottom grill on the front bumper just like yours is. I got the electrochromatic mirror on eBay for $79+shipping this past January.

Hi-temp silicon sealant will stand up to like 500F... its like $5 a tube, and can be found just about anyplace that has an auto section (ie fred meyers)

The thermometer is less than $12 at Amazon.com. The automotive velcro I got from Home Depot. It was left over from another install.

The longest part was running the wire from the battery to the front of the grill, 10 minutes maybe.
