so i had an idea the other day.
when we upgrade the sound system clocks are standard on aftermarket HU's so the need for one in the dash is no longer necessary.
im pretty sure ive seen gadgets that display the tach in 100 rpm increments does any one know if the clock can be hacked to display the rpms?
wow that is a neat idea, would be kool to see that done...

Sodium Duck was trying to do a similar idea by cutting out the clock and placing a small tach in that area...

I have no idea if he ever did it though.

Definitely doable, if you can find one of the correct size, or are willing to disassemble one to extend the wiring for the LED displays so they sit in the correct place. The clock is a separate module, so it is easily removable.

why not use that LCD to show outside temp like Lt Noogie wanted to do? I would think a 3 digit tach would be weird. when at idle, your tach would read 6-8, when going balls to the way it'd say 45 or whatever.
I like the idea of using the LCD for something... maybe there is something equally as cool, but would seem more normal than a tach.

It wouldn't have to be 3 digits. With 4 digits plus the colon for the clock there's space for a 4 digit tach.
Better yet, how about a custom module which can switch between clock, tach, temp, stored DTC's, etc?

Tuck, i saw the threads. thats cool but to hack the clock and retain the stock finish would be much easier i think.
im sure if someone was able to hack the clock they could aslo disable the colon.
either way.
stored DTC's would be cool but wouldnt that require taping into the ecu = alot more complications i would assume.
i neither have the time or MONEY to do anything right now. im sure there has to be some electronic junkie who has tried.
meh. IF ever get to this ill post

The reason I mentioned the stored DTC's is that I have a complete working OBDII interface that a buddy and I created a few years ago (with the intention of marketing it as a $50 code reader that could also display one sensor's data {tach, water temp, etc.}). Before we finished it, the cheap readers hit the market. We completed the project for our own use and have been looking for a use for it. This thread got me thinking that a fully integrated limited function scangauge might be a perfect application for it.

Newbe here. Old post, but better than startin a new one I guess. I plan on putting a tach in my 09 HB. I like the clock hack idea. CTScott, did you figure out a way to get this info/data to display on the clock?

Yes. I am still working on getting them to production:
