View Full Version : Would You Let One Of Your Best Friends Drive Your Yaris?

Okay, say you had a best friend who has no experience driving a car without ABS, is lowered, and is on low profile tires? Your friend also admits to not having good depth perception and brakes late and hard. Your friend is also used to driving bigger trucks. Would you let your friend drive your car on a long trip?

sounds like a lot of people i know. I would say no. I would guess in your car he'll become alot more paranoid since:

1. it aint his car
2. the car is smaller, and lower.
3. cant see the front end at all.

up to you :) have him sign a legal document or something lol

LMAO, I'm just worried at the fact that he brakes late and hard (no choice but to since his lack of depth perception), and that he doesn't avoid pot holes. I may just suck it up and drive the 7-8 hours straight myself. My gf, and my other two best friends can keep me awake. hahaha. Also those reasons, and my car is only insured under my name.

yeah owning a truck that normally glides over potholes can affect your rims lol. I also find myself breaking alot later since my old car had a very long nose, and the yaris having a almost no nose at all, it messes my mind up. if you got other ppl going, yeah, make the drive, and bring some jolt to drink, you'll be fine.

hehehe, I've done the same drive with just me and my mom, who doesn't drive. LOL. Two cans of Rockstars only with limited sleep prior to the trip. hahahaha.

I have only let 2 people I know drive my car that was my GF and one of the members on here that almost didn't get slowed down in time for a big dip in the road. He's on stock and wasn't used to my DF's. Besides that the only other people that have driven my car have been a couple of techs at the dealership. Plus 7-8 hour drive isn't bad. I do that alone when I visit my brothers in Kansas City. I save keep it safe keep the car beautiful drive it yourself. Then you don't have to worry about losing a friend when you ask for money to cover damages

Yeah, true. I just don't know how to say it without offending him.

I ran into a similar problem when I had to drive to Minneapolis when I first got my yaris. My girlfriend and I had to drive there and back (about 7 hrs each way) in one day....

She is an admittedly bad driver so I just had to suck it up and drive 14 hours...

It sucked but I can't tell you how glad I was to get home with my car still in on piece.

If he offers to drive just brush it off and be like "nah I'm good to drive".

Haha that's really the ony way I can think of staying behind the wheel the whole time without offending him or making it seem like you doubt his abilities.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

WTF? "...suck it up and drive the 7-8 hours straight?" Child's play! If you can't do a 7-8 day of driving then you shouldn't be behind the wheel of a car! My 73-year-old mother still drives more than that in a day!

My record is nearly 24 hours of driving, from San Diego to Little Rock, with one 1-hr power nap along the way! It sucked royally, as I was driving a mid-80s Honda Accord with no a/c; and I was a lot younger then (22), but it was doable.

Pucker up, buttercup, and just do the driving yourself! Your friend sounds like an accident waiting to happen!

yea you can definatly drive 7-8 hours straight, i have a similar story actually...my friend has an 04 VW Jetta and just like how we treat our yaris' he treats his VW. so anyhow, the road trip was from ontario canada to florida...its hard to drive that straight but since he knew how i treat my yaris i was the only other that was allowed to drive the VW...moral of the story is that if you show that you take pride and take care driving your car, you can drive someoen else's but if u drive like a dummy u cant simple as that! 8 hours aint bad buddy you wont even need to have a jolt just play dem beats

I want your best friend! I always tell my friends if they think they are going to wreck - TOTAL it... I owe way more than its worth and they'd be doing me a favor. However safety is the key, parts and cars are replaceable, people are not :)

KL,

Just tell him your insurance covers only you and do the driving yourself! Heck I wish I had an excuse to drive that far-it seems like I never get to drive my Yaris enough, LOL. Enjoy the trip-it could be fun!

I've let a few of my friends and my dad all drive my car... but with yours, might as well do it yourself...

Frankly, if your freind has depth perception that is that much of a concern I'd not only dis-allow him use my vehicles but I'd also recommend he not drive anything on public roadways. Has he rear-ended many?

"Would You Let One Of Your Best Friends Drive Your Yaris? "

No, because the manual transmission really does take a while before you get the hang of it on the Yaris and I think my friends who drive autos would get frustrated. Plus I don't want anyone torturing my little car while they're trying to learn - I stalled it enough times myself when I first got it

At times, I wish I had gotten an auto in case I have to let someone drive it, but I didn't, so the answer is no.

I have a completely monogamous relationship with mine...well sometimes I drive my Tacoma, but don't tell my Yaris...

Oh, shoot, Kaotic, I didn't notice it was a very specific question about your friend. OK, let me try this again. If your friend is open to you telling him exactly how you want your car to be driven then yes. If you don't like your friend's driving style and you don't think he'll listen to you if you ask him to not brake hard, etc., just tell him you're not insured, or a car is like a woman, and you don't lend your woman not even to your bestfriend, or whatever BS you ca think of. Bottom line is that it's understood that some people don't like to lend their cars. His feelings may be hurt a little, but eventually he'll understand. Lots of people don't let you drive their cars.

^i highly suggest against downing two rockstars right before the drive. you'll just get a caffeine crash later. just get a decent amount of sleep and drink one rockstar (or other caffinated beverage) while you're driving. caffeine works best when you consume little amounts over long periods of time- not all at once.

my gf is in l.a., so i do this drive quite often alone (or with sleeping passengers) non-stop with just one cup of coffee consumed for the first half of the trip. but then again, i'm sorta entertained by the radio and somewhat busy with hypermiling.

I know I can since I've driven the same route by myself before. I just don't want to be overly tired before we get to our destination. hahaha, but oh well, if I'm tired by the time we get there, I'll just drink another energy drink. I can sleep at night.

Oh, no, I won't be chugging the two before I drive. I sip on it and make one or two last the whole way.

hahaha, if I had a Scan Gauge II, I would be better at playing hypermiling games :frown:

I've let my fiance drive my car about 6-8 times.... all but one or two of those times were highway driving, probably because I didn't want to do an 8hr drive all by myself. 8 hr drives are not fun after getting off work.

I would also let my best friend drive my car for a week if he was ready to buy a new car... he wants to get a fit... but driving a yaris for a few days might be good for him too. My car has been driven (for more than 50ft) for only about 8-10 times by people other than myself.

I let my friends with faster cars drive mine if I can drive theirs! I've driven all sorts of cars since I got the Yaris. Stage 2 Saturn Sky turbo was my favorite, although the clutch was a total PITA. When that thing hits boost, though, you better hold on!

I drove near non-stop by myself from Colorado Springs back here to Detroit, took around 23 hours I think. I will NEVER do it again because it was rediculously boring driving the i80 and more so is that it exhausted me so badly that I was passing out at stoplights by the time I hit Chicago. But that's a massive difference then from a 7-8 hour drive. Just load up on some snacks and a few good cd's, you'll be more then set dude.

If I had the same qualms you did about a buddy driving I wouldn't hand over the keys. If he's a good friend he'll understand. Just pack a few 5-hour energy bottle and get a good nights rest before and you'll be fine.

kaotic: might not be exactly the circumstances you mentioned above, but my friend is the kind of person who always drive fast. 80-100mph on long road trips. But as scared as he could be of cops and speeding tickets, he is the kind of guy who would slow down to speed limit at every coming overpass, where cops could be hiding, and speed up once confirmed there are no cops.

he is kind of a lousy driver, does not check his dead angles (always rely on those mirror add-on). He has yet not mastered driving manual, and will never as he hates driving manual.

yet, i've let him drive my yaris....

Heck, the only time my wife drives my car is when I am incapable (really bad migraine) or I am working on her Isuzu.

From seeing how my friends drive.....I'd suck it up and do the drive myself. I dont care if i have to buy 3-4 Rockstar cans, slap myself if i start to feel sleepy, a good punch in the gut, etc......

My Corolla friend has got into an accident by himself as well as getting hit by another.... I......trust only myself...
