View Full Version : If they made a Hummer with the Yaris's MPG would you buy it?

Suppose technology got so good overnight that GM came out with a 29/36 mpg rated Hummer, that was also the same price as the Yaris.
Would you buy it?

No, they are still ridiculous. I'll take a Jeep anytime, even the newer, minivan-engined JKs (but I would prefer a TJ/LJ!)...

If GM had built the H4 I would have taken one over the Yaris any day...I have no interest in Chinese Hummer.

No...I have no need for an ugly, oversized, overpriced, piss-poor handling fuel sipper...

My Yaris Liftback is a perfect fit for my lifestyle. Anything larger than a Yaris would be unnecessary for me, so that's a no for a Hummer--even if it did get good MPG.

If it looked like that , cost the same as my Yaris , Hell yes
it would be in the garage in a heart beat .
:burnrubber:
No, I wanted a small hatchback so I wouldn't trade even.
The other thing is the whole "Hummer Image" thing-just because of it's history it screams "look at me-I'm swimming in excess!" I'll pass.

My dream car is the original H1. So if it looked like an H1 and cost the same amount as a Yaris, and got the same MPG, hell yeah I'd buy one.
But that's never going to happen so bleh.

No.
I have NO need for a Hummer, plus where would I park the damn thing?
On the other hand, I'd definitely consider a traditional pick-up truck . A pick-up can be real useful. But if I got it now, I'd run into the same parking problem.
I think I'd sooner get a SMART than a Hummer, any day. The Hummer is just ridiculous.

It would still take way too many resources to make, handle extremely poorly, be too large to park anywhere (especially in my garage), and I have absolutely no need to project a "crush my neighbor" mentality.
No, thanks.

I'd have to say no. Mostly on principle that I am not a fan of GM (I've had issues with GM cars not liking me or my driving style, and the lack of longevity). Now if we're talking a Jeep Grand Chereoke, then hellz yeah!! Or a Ford F250, extended cab, 4x4, off-road package, with at least an 8 foot bed, in silver, then I'd go for it. Otherwise, no.

I had a Suzuki XL-7 mid size SUV before the Yaris. Not as tough as Hummer, but it got 23 Mpg (19 EPA rated) and was never, ever stuck.
I didn't have to sell it at the time, but even not considering gas, maintenance and supplies on the Yaris is so much more economical. The Yaris uses only half as much oil per change as the Suzuki did, the tires are 25% cheaper, and parts and accessories are readily available. Unless you happen to know which Suzuki parts have GM equivalents, a simple broken tail light will be much more expensive than it should be.
Between work and home I have 3 Toyota Yaris dealers to work with (although I prefer my own mechanic) but the only Suzuki dealer is very likely to close before year end.
For my daily commute, the Yaris is simply a much better fit and more enjoyable to drive. Not that the XL-7 wasn't great for a weekend trip to the mountains, but that is 5x per year versus 250x/yr.

Well GM won't be releasing any type of HUMMER since they have sold the brand... but no matter what type of HUMMER they did theoretically release you aren't going to find much support for it on a Yaris forum. Kinda like asking a HUMMER forum if they would trade their HUMMER for a AWD Yaris.

To whoever said they wanted a Jeep Cherokee. I don't know what the newer models are like, but I drove one back in the mid 80's for a couple of years. It was useful at the time, perfect to go out on rough terrain and it was fun to drive at the beach and stuff. But the piece of sh...t spent almost as much time at the mechanic than on the road. Once, the tranny slipped and the jeep lurched forward on its own (I'm not kidding) when the car was stationary and I almost went through the post-office wall with it. Not making it up. I stopped driving it after that, but I'll never forget that moment.

I've had my Wrangler for 10 years and the only thing I've done to it is replace the clutch. The engine is virtually bulletproof. The only downside is the lack of power in the upper gears, but that's to be expected to some degree. The fact that it's the exact opposite of aerodynamic doesn't help much around here either (too much wind resistance). Other than that it's been a real work horse that's a lot of fun to take up into the mountains.

I believe you.
But if you type up "Jeep Grand Cherokee recalls" you'll see a recall for almost every year. Back in the early 80's, that model was really not the best. Fun to drive off road, for sure, but the constant repairs, damn. Maybe we had a lemon, I don't know, or maybe it was a bad year. Like I said, I can't speak for the current models, and of course, I wasn't trying to put your car down
By the way, the Wrangler is a different model, no? I was talking about the Cherokee. They had a few recalls on those.

even if the price/mpg was the same, i wouldn't buy one cause it's not my style of vehicle and parking would be a bitch...i'm worried about people door dinging me now and i've usually got more than 3 feet from cars next to me with the yaris but, there is something to be said about the various applications that a hummer lends itself to...can't pull a boat with a yaris, can't go off roading with a yaris, etc...

There were multiple models. Wrangler is completely different from the Chereokee. The Grand Chereokee is different from the Chereokee. The regular Chereokee had issues. But the Grands usually held up better. The one I drove was a 1995. Early 2000s they changed their whole lineup so that now you have the Wrangler (including the new 4-door version), Liberty, Patriot, Compass, Grand Cherekee, and the Commander (in roughly their size orientation, smallest to largest). Yeah, I know, looks like I know a lot about the Jeeps, which I do. Always have been a fan. Hell, I learned to drive stick on a 87 Wrangler. I've driven a Wrangler, Cherekee (which was replaced by the Liberty), Grand Chereokee, and took a Patriot for a test drive at one point.
I haven't found there to be too many issues with them overall. Sure there have been recalls on them, happens with a lot of car companies. But it's usually for minor stupid stuff.
But anywho, that's my take on the Jeeps. I'm a fan of them, I just don't like their price tag right now nor their lack of fuel efficiency.

Otherwise it's a Yaris for me!

Hummers are too big for my taste. The first vehicle I had when I was 16 was a full-size minivan and I freaking hated parking that thing (especially in reverse). I don't imagine that the visibility out the rear of the hummers is very good and I know that they are too wide and long for me to enjoy driving. My Ranger was a bit longer than I would have liked, but I love the Yaris!
