Hi,
My wife's Yaris started to make a whirring sound when the a/c is turned on. The source of the sound seems to come from under the main glovebox. Near where the fuse box is located. It is audible from outside too near the vent intake. It does not seem to emanate from the engine bay. However, according to my wife, the air that comes out does not seem to be either warm or cold, so I guess ambient temp.

Can someone please shed some light as to what could possibly be wrong with it?

Also, would one know if this should be covered under the 3 year warranty guarantee? The car is 2.5yrs old and have done 35,000 kms (roughly 22,000 miles)

Many thanks for your anticipated assistance

warranty? yes.
possible that something like papers/napkins fell behind the glovebox and is restricting air flow from the fan? yes.
easy for you to pull out glovebox to check for said papers? yes.

I hope you are right Shroomster ... ...hate for it to be something more sinister !!

Anyway, just rang Toyota Service to book the car in for investigation.

Thanks mate

Sounds like that might be the cooling fan turning on to run air through the condenser. The yaris A/C is not the greatest and it takes about 10-15mins to really get ice cold.

G'day Phil,

yes it sounds like some sort of a fan being turned on near the fuse box when the a/c is turned on.

Hehe here downunder, our Yaris a/c is pretty cold for our needs even in 30 odd degree C in summer... then again, the cabin is pretty small compared to our Honda Odyssey. Now that takes awhile to cool in hot weather...

Hey mate
Thanks for the pointer...Being a weekend, I decided to do what you pointed to and sure enough, there was a piece of paper dropped onto the fan. The a/c works a treat now.

I've had the same thing happen with other cars when a leaf got in from the outside vent in front of the windshield. Hopefully the Yaris has better screening.
