my moms cat pissed in my dads 03 tacoma a few weeks ago. he pulled all the interior out and scrubbed it all including the floor boards. if its just your seat you need to get it out asap so the smell doesnt absorb into the rest of the interior. steam your seat and leave it out of the car. my dad left his truck apart for about 4 days or so with a fan on it.

There is a product that you can buy at pet stores that spray on a chemical that neutralizes the urine and gets rid of the smell.

Aww man, I feel bad for you. I would definitely get that seat out of there, and leave it out some place until the smell is all gone. I don't konw what products to use but I would try to get the seat out ASAP. Sorry.
The neighbor's cat peed in my car once when I forgot to close the windows overnight (it was summer). It took a long time to get rid of the smell, but eventually it went away. (believe me, I **** ALWAYS*** remember to close my windows now!! )

Yeah, I don't know about any of these solutions, sorry. I guess you already tried Febreez?
Urine is a tough one. YOu probably need some specifically designed product to get rid of that one. The honda lost the smell on her own eventually, after leaving the windows craked open for weeks (well after cleaning the inside, but I didn't buy anything special, just used regular, strong carpet cleaner stuff. The car was old, though so I didn't care, I used what I already had at home under the sink).
Good luck and let us know how you manage to get rid of the smell.
Yeah, the cat probably got scared in the car. If it makes you feel any better, my dog threw up in the car the first time we drove him home.

Sorry about your car, man that s*cks, a brand new car, too!

Couple of home rem's for you would be to use mouthwash and water (2/1) mix or vinegar and water (same mix). Pour it on and let it stand for 15 minutes and dry as much as possible. The smell of the mixture will go away after a few days. Off the shelf products like Pet Out can work, but are expensive and don't usually get all the smell out.

another more harsh way (aftersmell) would be amonia and peroxide and it won't harm the fabric I'm pretty sure (even mix again). works great on home carpets so you might test it first.

Read about Nature's Miracle. I heard it costs a lot and it doesn't do the trick.
We use it at our house for the carpet every now and then. It seems to work for us.

Too bad the fabric is different on the 09s. The wrecked Yaris that I picked up has a good passenger seat, but the fabric is the 08 blue dot type (and it is a bit sun faded)

^ The main problem with the OP's seat would ultimately be the seat foam retaining the moisture/smell/residue from the urine. The fabric would be easy to clean and be effective when clean. It is possible to seperate the foam from the fabric and send the foam to the OP to use. Using new adhesive to apply the skin/fabric from the 2009. It's an option and would solve the issue of having to deal with the smell and lingering effects of urine. maybe you guys can work that out

Not a bad idea, especially considering that the 09 has the airbag in the upper portion. The fabric is glued to the foam, but that wouldn't be a big deal for a auto upholstery shop.

yep, no problem at all really to get off. I've done it a hundred times on other cars to dye to the fabric. This would take time to do, but to me is the best option without dealing with the cleaning chemicals and will or will it not work. This is a sure thing.

so a huge question... how long has this set in before you messed with it? or have u tried several different methods? my dad got lucky because as soon as he got home he pulled everything out and scrubbed and steamed it right away so thats what made a huge difference..

screw all these "home remedies"
go to the grocery store and RENT a "rug doctor". Buy the "upholstry" cleaner (not carpet). The cleaner also has "resolve" in it, and will scotchguard your seat for further r-kelly escapades. The rug doctor, should have a "wand' hand attachment to use with the machine.
Yank that seat out IF YOU CAN. If not, just clean it while its in there.
DO THE WHOLE SEAT about 10 times. Then, after that.. do it 10 more times... this is PISS after all..
Afterwords, let the seat AIR OUTSIDE if you can, if the seat did not get taken out, MAKE SURE TO LEAVE YOUR WINDOWS CRACKED 1/2" so the water/chemicals can escape the car. PARK IN THE DIRECT SUN if you can.
Then, hit it with fabreeze for about 1 week while your driving. I would NOT run the a/c in the car at all.. if that smell soaks into your a/c unit youll never get the funk out.
AFTER ALL THAT - go buy a 3 pack of vanillaroma trees... open ONE and sit it under your seat. 1 week later, open another one, then ONE MONTH later, open the last.
Guarantee that piss smell will be gone. Also post pictures of your kittah!
I had a ragdoll cat (best breed ever) in all white.. i loved her so much!

For the next time you need to transport your kitty, buy a cat carrier and put a towel inside. They make cardboard carriers that shouldn't be too expensive.
Can you post a photo of the offender so we can admire it?

well going back to school. I think what you are smelling is the ammonia smell in the urine. You could try a mixture of oxyclean and water and spray and scrub it. Its got stuff that will neutrilize it. Since its more of a base. it should do the trick. Then take a wet dry vac and suck out the water. And then let the seat air dry for a few days. Its very simple to take the seat out only 4 bolts

I thought the seat had all kinds of wiring because of the airbag and weight sensors though?
...sorry I am a chick and I really have no idea how car wiring works.
If the seat is removed and the car is powered on while the seat is absent, you will log a bunch of codes in the SRS system (and the SRS light will stay lit). The codes can fairly easily be reset by following a procedure that involves connecting and disconnecting a jumper a bunch of times. If you are going to remove the seat It is a easier to disconnect the battery first (and leaving it disconnected until the seat is back in) to avoid having to deal with resetting the SRS. And, yes there are a few cables that have to be disconnected to remove it.

Okay. If I decide to take the entire seat out I will definitely have to refer back to your instructions. I wish there were a simple solution (but there never is!)...

I have a pet carrier, the guy I adopted her from said SHE WILL NOT get in the carrier. I was going to force her in there myself anyway, but I was taking her home, so I didn't want him to think I was gonna try and be an asshole with her before I even got her out the door, lol.For future reference we used to have an open-top pet carrier that was basically a giant foam cushion with walls on all sides so that the pet stayed in there. It was washable so if there were any spills on the road (and there were quite a few) it wasn't a problem. It's a nicer solution for pets that don't like being shut in a little plastic box.

How's kitty adjusting? She doing well in your home?

Haha, no one asked because they're all men and most men hate kitties  Hehe.
She is doing very well! She didn't come out from underneath the bed for a good 5 days. I have a Puggle and she really hates him, but she is warming up. It's a process, I'll tell you that. I never owned a cat but I know a lot about them. I wish I got one sooner. She is great.
That's how my cat was when I first got her. Though in my case, it was just her and some fish in a tank. No dog to annoy her or chase her. I got her on a Sunday (Mother's Day actually), and I really didn't see much of her until around Wednesday I think. And by the end of that week, she had already cost me around $300 due to her getting sick (she came from a foster home with lots of other kitties, to an apt with just her, which had been steam cleaned just prior to moving in).
Now, she can't stop bothering me when I'm home! I swear she's part dog! She insists upon being in whatever room I'm in, constantly getting underfoot (I couldn't tell you how many times she's been kicked or stepped on cause I didn't see her), and will not let me just sit on my couch by myself. She has to be either on my lap or right next to me getting kanoched and cuddled and petted. Actually, I'm not sure which is worse, my cat or my boyfriend..........

That's normal. Cats don't much like to be relocated but after a while, they adapt.
I kept a cat for a few months for a friend of mine and moving the cat was a big deal (she didn't pee on my seat but she scratched the hell outof us when we put her in her pet carrier) but after a few days at my place she adapted, eventually resumed her normal cat life (going up on the roof, bringing back birds at doorstep in the morning from time to time - which I could really have done without, but what can you do, a cat is a cat). She also knew when I was coming back from work, came right back when she heard my car.
When I had to give her back to the friend, as agreed, she again hated being moved, again acted moody for a few days, but eventually settled.

The trick to getting a cat into a carrier is to leave it lying about so that the cat gets used to seeing it. They will even go inside by themselves to explore after a while. That way they won't get alarmed when you put them inside (until you close the door ).

I've ordered a product called Auto Vaccine that is Chlorine Dioxide. It is a powder that comes in a cup that you add water to, and it produces a chlorine type gas that permeates all of the porous surfaces inside the car and eliminates all bacteria, mold, and mildew. Most smells come from the waste of those three things. I have not received it yet, but I will this weekend. Once you set it off, you have to leave the car alone for up to 12 hours. You cannot get in it while the product is working, as it causes respiratory damage. After the product has finished, you simply roll down the windows and air it out for several minutes. Then it is ok to drive. It is enviromentally friendly and approved by the EPA. Look it up using Google and come to your own conclusions. I am trying to elimate a moldy musty smell that started when I left a window down in a rain storm. I will get back and tell you how it went.

People who hate cats and are cruel to them will be cruel to people too. It's nothing to be proud of. It's a shame.
My wife saw three adorable little blue eyed Persian kittens yesterday. She'd've brought them home if we weren't about to go on vacation. They're being fed, though.

I got the Auto Vaccine today, or as I refer to it as "the Bleach Bomb". I will try it out this weekend and tell you the verdict. By the way I have a red tabby with no tail (natural) and have had both cats and dogs for many years. Sometimes as many as five. So I agree that people who are cruel to cats are cruel people, and usually do cruel things to people too.

I don't hate cats but I get along much better with dogs for some reason. They dig me, and I dig them. Woof. Every time I walk dwn the street and pass the coffee shop in my neighborhood, where people hang out with their dogs every week-end, it just makes my day.
I'm with Yaris Hilton. Generally, I don't trust / respect people who don't respect animals.

Well, I tried the Auto Vaccine product, and so far so good. I talked to the company and made sure I had complete instructions, which are also included with the kit. They recommended I do the process overnight, as the Chlorine Dioxide is less effective in sunlight. So I started the kit at 7:30 pm, and stopped it at 8:00 am the next day. It is a cup that you put a 1/4 inch of warm water in the bottom, then stand a packet up in the cup. You cannot be in the vehicle during the process. The next morning I got in the car, and it smelled like chlorine - like a swimming pool. I put the fan on recirc, no A/C, as the suggested, and ran it for a half an hour - just to make sure any mold or mildew in the A/C would be eliminated. Then at 8:00, I rolled down the windows, removed the cup, and threw it away, as the directions called for. Now it's into two days later, and the car still smells of chlorine. The smell will go away after a few days they told me, so I am waiting to give my final judgement. But, the seats no longer smell like mold, and that was what I was trying for. They also have a money back guarantee. They told me if the first treatment did not completely work, that they would send another kit free of charge. And if that kit did not work, they would refund my $24.95. So those are my results so far. They told me that the top three reasons that people order the product is for cigarette odor, skunk odor, and pet urine.

I haven't seen an update on if you de-stinkified the seat yet, but I removed the passenger seat cushion from Crashy, when I took the seat apart to monkey with the occupant classification system. The cushion comes off fairly easily (there are a bunch of plastic clips along the bottom that hold the sides down). Once removed, the only part that is glued is the top surface (all four sides are free) and the top separates very easily from the foam.

So you mean, maybe she could just replace the foam, not the whole seat? you know that's really good info. I'm following the thread with interest because spilling things on seat can happen VERY EASILY.

Watch out for any electrical components. You wouldn't want to soak the weight sensors.
I've had a cat pee on a couch, and cleaned it by just hosing down the cushion foam & cover. In my case, I was able to do it while it was fresh (still wet), so I didn't even need any soap. I set both out in the sun to dry after squeezing out the water and everything was OK.

Cat pee is tough. I have seen contractors have to remove carpet, padding AND the floorboards to get rid of it. Just when you think it is gone, you will get in your car on a hot day, and it will be back.
BTW, just because somebody hates cats doesn't mean they are mean to people, or other animals, or are destined to be serial killers. Come on people!

I think the posters saying "cat pees, cat out the window" were joking, at least I took it that way and had a laugh, but there were other threads where people mentioned that drivers would go out of their way on the road to kill whatever was crossing the road, for fun. that ain't cool

Auto Vaccine is AMAZING!!!
I am in the Classic Auto Upholstery Restoration business now for 30 years. I literally get some of the most rotten foul smelling cars on a regular basis. Auto Vaccine was recommended to me from a friend on the police force who uses it for their K9 transports. Since then I have used Biocide System's Auto Vaccine to successfully remove cigarette odor, mold and mildew odor, skunk odor, gas odor, and even upholstery glue odor.
I just received a $3000.00 tip from a very high profile client. I have customized seven cars for him. He brought in a brand new Bentley that I had customized three months back. He went on an overnight sailing trip. He accidentally left a window partly open when he parked his car at the Marina. Some kids thought it would be funny to through their fish caught off the dock into the window. When he got back there wear for rotting fish and fish guts all over the back passengers seat. This is now one of the worst smelling cars I have ever worked on. Luckily there was no discoloration on the leather seats but the smell was putrid.
He was expecting to have to completely reupholster the car but did not want to go through his insurance if at all possible. So he came to me for an estimate.
I felt very bad for him knowing how much he had just spent on the car. I asked him to leave the car for two days to see what I could do. It took two treatments of two Biocide System's Auto Vaccine. A grand total of four units and the car was odor free and completely decontaminated in less than 24 hours! AMAZING!!!
That is a grand total of $79.80 plus shipping. When he asked how much I told him it was on the house.
Needless to say I have a very happy and extremely loyal customer who wrote me a $3000.00 check on the spot as a token of thanks.
FYI
The police officer who recommended it to me suggested I only get it from SMM Distributors or directly from the Biocide Systems web site. They are the only ones carrying the "Biocide System's Auto Vaccine". The label on the pouch should say Biocide Systems on it and is silver. If it doesn't say Biocide Systems its not. It should also come with a money back guarantee.
If you are in the Auto detailing Biz or in need of eliminating odors or just sanitizing your car, I highly recommend this product. 5 stars all the way!!"

Also, we use Natures Miracle from Petsmart in our carpet cleaner with regular carpet shampoo and it makes our carpet smell brand-freakin new again. We have a disabled dachshund that doesn't know when he uses the bathroom and when his belly bands slip off, we will have a trail of dachshund dribble down the carpet ... it isn't pleasant. The Natures Miracle has exceeded my expectations of a urine remover 110% becuase we have tried a LOT of products to try to keep from having to fork over our damage deposit/replace the carpet in our apartment.

Hey,
I'm the original guy who mentioned the Auto Vaccine (aka 08YarisAZ), and I read that review and thought it was the biggest pile of garbage I had seen.
I contacted the firm, biocidesystems.com, and told them I had read this review on Amazon, along with two other reviews that didn't like it. One guy bought a 10 year old car with smoke odors, and the other guy bought one that the sunroof had leaked in. The guy with the smoke odor said it didn't work at all. The guy with the leak said that it did work partially, but he didn't want to spend another $25 for a second kit.
On their website, they have glowing reviews, and who wouldn't on their own sight? So I leveled with him about the lack of reviews for the product. I told them that I was very hesitant to even order it. But, I was sick of the smell, had tried too many things, and I was willing to try it. He said if it didn't work, to contact them and they would send me a second kit free. And if that didn't work, they would refund me the $24.95. The shipping cost of $7 is not refundable.
Now I do not work for them, or even care about them. I was trying to give the OP some help, and am even trying the product at my own expense. The review above is from some shill. No one would park a Bentley with the windows down and get a fish thrown in it. And no one would give a $3000 tip for getting a fish smell out. And I told the supplier that.
Now onto my results. I did the kit over Saturday night into Sunday morning. When it was done, it smelled like bleach. Now it is Thursday, and the bleach smell is subsiding. But, I do smell a trace of the "wet dog" odor coming from my seat cushions (the bottom half). It is not as bad, and it does have a trace of the Febreze that I used the day before I tried the kit. The Febreze odor will go away, but I don't think that the wet dog odor totally will.
So today, I am asking them for the money back or the second kit. The smell did lessen, and maybe another dose will get rid of it. There is a Canadian website that sells the same thing, and it recommends that you use two kits at once.
So that's my story on it.
And by the way, I have had a cat pee on carpet, in closets, etc, and none of the stuff available at Petsmart, Petco, Costco, Sams, Walmart, or anywhere has totally gotten rid of the odor. I have tried Nature's Miracle, Odoban, etc., and they do a good job for a period of time. But get the area wet again with water like from a carpet cleaner, and it comes back. Cat urine is the worst. I can get dog urine odor out, but cat urine has caused me to replace the carpet, the pad, and even take muratic acid to concrete slabs underneath the pad to finally get rid of the smell.

Well, I kind of agree with you there. That story is a little, hmm, I don't know, unbelievable.
I'm not really a bad guy. I'm usually nice to cats, dogs and even children. Believe it or not I've even been nice to old people a few times. I don't laugh at the misfortunes of others. BUT DAMNIT TO HELL MAN I CAN'T SEE A TOPIC ENTITLED "HELP! My cat peed in my front seat :(" and not laugh just a little. I don't mean to, it just happens.
Now I know that I wouldn't be laughing if it was my car and I really do feel bad for the op (once the laughter subsides). Someone please kill me, I probably deserve it.

It's not a crime to hate cats. I learned to hate them when we got up to 6 of them. Took awhile to fix that situation....

Oh yeah! A coworker of mine rescued a musk turtle one morning on the way to work and found out the hard way where their name came from. His Mazda 626 stunk for months.

For real? You're joking, right? Haven't seen this much peeing being mentioned before in a forum
I wonder how the OP is doing with her seat?

I put 'em in the floorboard on the rubber mat. That's their normal defense.

Wow this thread is super old; but I wanted to update those people who vaguely remember the problem I had back in August of 09 with my cat peeing in my front seat.
To sum it up, through the winter, I dealt with it cause the smell diminished. Now that the summer months are starting to come up and it's getting very warm and humid, the smell returned.
I switched to Progressive Insurance on May 1st. They agreed to cover the cost and I just had to pay my $150 deductible. The bottom cushion replacement with labor came to around $420. They helped me out a lot and I am very grateful for them!
So thankfully, my pretty Yaris no longer smells of CAT PEE!!!:bow::bow:

Nice.
I'm shocked that an insurance company would cover this though especially since it happened long before you signed up with them. Weird. And also the nature of the "damage". Didn't think insurance covered things like this.
