View Full Version : MPG difference 5w-30 vs 5w-20 ???

just curious.. ive lost about 2 mpg with the new rims and tire due to weight would the 5w-20 help me gain it back? thanks

can't say right now but in a few weeks...I'll be doing an oil change and switching to 5w-20

I didn't notice a difference when I switched.

Until 2009 the yaris was using 5-20 for fuel economy now they are back up to 5-30 again because it doesnt make a difference in the 1.5.
motor will be less protected

I once tried 0W-20 full-syn 300V Motul in my old Honda Jazz 1.3 and that made a significant difference from 5W-30 fully-synthetic engine oil.
I'd get 12km/liter before and after swtiching I'd get 13.5-14km/liter but I could feel the engine was hotter everytime I popped the hood open when I got home.

yes for our hot weather here 20 oil is not really recommended...

Agree. But worth finding out. :)
I think 5W-30 is spot on for hot and humid weather and daily driving. I'd use something slightly thicker for track use, like 5w or 10w-40 plus an oil cooler for added oil capacity :)
