My wife and I get stopped in parking lots all of the time by people who are curious about our '09 Yaris 3-door in absolutely red. Both men and women do this and almost everyone of them has positive things to say about its looks. In over half a century of driving, this has never happened to us before and it really feels kind of nice as we love our Yaris and certainly don't mind sharing its virtues with other folks.

I dont get much love for my car, but i enjoy that its unique and every yaris around where im at is a sedan :)

I have gotten both reactions. The "where's the other 1/2 of your car" type. Mostly retired people over the age of 65 like my Mom. And "is that a hybrid?" types.
Mostly working people under the age of 65.

I usually get complements. I've gotten asked if it was a hybrid multiple times but it gives me an opportunity to spout off about how much fun it is to drive, and how much I love it... I get "Oh cool!" and "Neat!" from drive through employees when I open the left glove box to get change... I usually get asked what kind of car it is after that (it's debadged)

Sometimes people ask if it's an electric car and what mileage do I get, but less so now that there are a few more Yarii in the neighborhood.

Once I was looking at this huge :bow:awesome:bow: classic car from the 50's :respekt: in a parking lot and the owner comes out, asks me what kind of car do I drive? I say "a Yaris" and the guy just laughed out loud. I don't think he meant it to be offensive, but he just couldn't help himself. I guess the Yaris is a funny car or something :iono:

I've only got a few comments on my Yaris but they have all been good. My last two cars were MINIs ('03 and '07) so I was used to getting comments, especially back in early '03 when The Italian Job came out. The cars were somewhat unusual back then.

FWIW, I switched to a Yaris because I enjoy it in the same way I enjoyed my first MINI...in many ways more.

since i traded my hatchback almost a year ago, i seem to notice them even more. i never notice the sedans. i know they are out there. they just blend in with the crowd. not a criticism, since i drive a corolla, which doesnt stand out at all, but when i think of a yaris, i really only think of a hatchback.

I find it all depends of the type of car owners, usually i find that people who enjoy cars and tuning them love the fact that your fooling around with a toyota yaris. And others that dont particularly care about tuning and such are the ones that usually give me a ahrd time.......all that really matters is that the ladies love it ;)

Since picking up my 5-door I seem to get a lot more onlookers, then I did with the sedan. That may also be because of the Absolute Red.

If anyone asked me where the other half was I would probably laugh hysterically as my other car is a Smart car, and the Yaris is the car with lots of space.

People are always wanting to know who makes it, and asking if they can sit in it. They always seem to like the way the doors sound when they close. Most assume that it's a hybrid.

I usually get asked if it's a hybrid or an electric car. I'd say 8 out of 10 times though I usually get shit for the car. Alot of the autoworkers (and just regular people as well) here feel butthurt and lash out on people who drive imports. I usually just laugh it off because most of the people here who cry "buy american", are people who drive 7+ year old cars and need to go "buy american" themselves instead of complaining about someone else not doing it.

Nothing would sway me in my decision to get and love the Yaris though. Tough little car that was cheap in price, has some nice mods for it to make it even more fun and it's still great on fuel. Looks different as well, which was a huge decision in me getting it. I can't stand having a car that everyone and their mothers have.

I get asked frequently.....mostly from people who are well off financially and question the need for a "lifestyle vehicle". They have all said something similar to "a car is just a tool to get a task accomplished" not the light of my life and I pretty much feel the same way. There is some reverse snobbishness going on but it can't compare on the irritating scale to the snobbishness of people who believe they are somehow superior because they choose to go into debt for a fancy car.

I generally catch flak for mine (of course I live in the middle of a bunch of rednecks with huge trucks). People talk about how it's "too small" and stuff like that, but then they can't give me a reason why they need 40" tires on their extended cab extended bed Silverados with 6 litre V8s and all that garbage.

For real, I don't understand why people think it's so small. They aren't all that much smaller than the Corolla and I have plenty of room inside. Me and 4 guys from work go to eat lunch in it sometimes and they don't complain about being cramped up.

This is what happened to me: a couple of months after I got mine (2007, still very few around here in the South Bay, CA) I drove my wife to 7-11 to pick up the Sunday paper. While my wife was inside, I was blasting one of my favorite songs with the window down in the parking lot. A police cruiser stops across the street and the cop gets out to get something from the store I guess. As he approaches the store, he is staring at me and asks "what is that?".
And I say: "Romanian rock."
And he goes: "I mean what car is that?"
"A Toyota Yaris, they just came out this year."
"Nice."
Usually all my friends are shocked when they sit in it, whether front or back seats, they say it's very spacious and didn't expect to have that much leg room. My wife has a Scion xD and my step-daughter likes the Yaris better for long road-trips, she says it's more comfortable to sit in :w00t:
Of course this is nothing new for me, but I'm from Europe and I really don't understand the Americans' infatuation with big cars. And most people are giving me the "big cars are safer" crap :bs: but if you look at the statistics more people die in SUV/truck and minivan rollovers than any other accidents.

To be fair, I must say I bought a Jeep Cherokee after I moved to the US and kept it for 3 years, just so I can strike that off my list  And the Cherokee is still half the size of an Excursion or Silverado

Anyway, I love my Yaris

fmicle, I'm with ya on the loving the Yaris!

I was looking for a nice, affordable, fuel efficient car. I saw the Yaris on Toyota's website, went to the dealer for a test drive, and I loved it the minute I saw it! Just to be sure I was getting something I really wanted, I also test drove a Honda Fit a day later. Sure the Fit is a lil roomier, but it just didn't seem to "fit" me very well. The Yaris is just better, IMO...

Granted, there are a few amenities I wish the Yaris had (sunroof, auto up/down window control, more than one power outlet, a tach, just to name a few). But all in all, a good car!

Sure goodies are nice, but I actually like the "Spartan life-style" so to speak. Manual windows, no power locks... they reduce the weight and minimize chances for stuff to break down. Reliability was the number 1 factor why I picked a Toyota and looks + fuel efficiency is why I picked the Yaris HB.
I got the base model and didn't even have a radio.

I think I wouldn't say no to a sunroof though, that would be really fancy :w00t:

It seems most of the "comments" are from people in the states down there. I guess in their excessiveness lifestyle they don't undersatnd why it's environmental or necessary to have a tiny fuel efficient vehicle when they can idle in their V8 sitting in the drive through for McDees.

When I drop the back seats flat and flip up the panels that cover the gaping hole between the "trunk" and the seats, I suddenly have more storage room than most SUVs, and certainly all sedans. haha.

But you've lost your rear seats, and have an unsafe condition with heavy stuff right behind you where it'll kill you if you hit something. (As I also do if I fold down the seats for long stuff.) I've got more trunk capacity than the big old Volvo I traded for the Yaris, and can carry several LONG old infantry rifles and my big Tupperware container of range stuff along with 3 adult passengers. If I've got a guitar and amp or rifles on board, they're out of sight of prying eyes. Stuff left in a hatchback is tempting to thieves. That trunk will hold anything that can be put in or on a grocery cart, and mine often has.

I like the hatchbacks' looks a lot, and actually wanted one, but after comparing them side by side I went with the sedan and have never regretted it. They're both great cars.

Yes, I've gotten all positive comments and even had people just walking around it and checking it out. The latest happened while at a drive thru picking up some lunch. I opened the glove box in front of the steering wheel to get some change from the holder when the girl at the window said "Wow, got your secret stash there, I want to drive your car just for that!" It was a little odd I suppose, but as we all know the Yaris has got mojo.

I get mixed reactions. Usually the stuck-up and/or ignorant crowd will scoff and give dirty looks, then drive-off in their SUVs back to the gas station... The sensible crowd will usually joke just a little at first, but then follow it up with some really good questions. The most common ones being about MPG and interior space (I'm 6'1")

But you've lost your rear seats, and have an unsafe condition with heavy stuff right behind you where it'll kill you if you hit something.
That is a very exaggerated claim on an already very general presumption.

just because you have stuff in the back doesn't mean it'll hit you if you hit something. it really depends on moment, friction, crumple zones, and size/shape/placement of the object.

Also.. the chance that an object would hit you in the head with enough force to kill you is very small.... there SHOULD be a properly placed headrest in the way.

I wouldn't advise mobbing around town doing lots of passing on two lane roads with a bowling ball or two in the back... but really... most of the stuff that people carry around in their cars aren't dense enough to cause death even if it did hit somebody in the head.

Also... Who uses the rear seats? unless you have kids under age 10, or the people up front are under 5'5" they are completely worthless. Sedan has nothing on the LB when it comes to cargo... I'd LOVE to see somebody try to fit a 58" long 33" tall, 23" deep Peer 1 desk in their sedan, or a Bail of hay.

I get compliments all the time.. Sometimes not the kind of attention that I want though.

I had an elderly man ask me if my car was a hybrid at Ralph's parking lot.

At work, my coworkers thought it would be funny to put a bra on my rear windshield wiper and watch me drive home with it on.. Hilarity ensued as I drove down the street minding my own business when some dude in a truck whistled at me. Next thing you know, some girls in a white sedan pull up next to me saying that they wanted to suck my cock. Oh boy..

Then just yesterday, I received a compliment from another female, who was taking her time to inspect the front of my vehicle. She says, "Is this your car?" to which I say, "Why yes, it is." And she says, "I like it."

Our cars get all the attention lol.

I pretty often use the rear seats. They work for adults just fine. I'm 6'3" and probably close to 260 lbs, and I've ridden back there myself. And knew a guy who got killed in a low speed head-on on a slick road on a college campus in winter, when a cinder block he'd put in the back of his hatchback for traction flew forward and hit him in the back of the head. I'm not exaggerating a thing.

exactly.... head on... cinder block... that's basically worst case scenario. The closest thing to a cinder block that most people would carry in their car's would be canned foods (groceries).... and that's what the cargo net is for.

If he was being smart he would have either:

a) had the back seats up, with the cinder block behind the rear seats, therefore would not have flown forward...

b) rear seats up or down, had the cinder block properly tied down so that it wouldn't move...

I guess I'm used to what my parents have always done with their truck (now an 03 Taco). They put cinder blocks in the bed, between the tailgate and the wheel wells. They also place pieces of wood that are long enough to go across the bed to prevent the blocks from sliding forward past the wheel wells. They also then place straps across the top of the blocks to prevent them from flying upward.

If he was smart, he would have used a 50lb bag of sand or rock salt. At least that's how we do it here in Michigan 99% of the time. Absolute worst case scenario is the bag breaks in your car instead of breaking your body.

I get lots of compliments on my Yaris, which is strange considering around here the F-150 is king. The one thing I have noticed is that it appeals more towards women than men, and most of latter have stated something along the lines of "that'd be a great car for my daughter/wife"...

I find the hatch very versatile, and in my opinion it is the nicer of the two models. I did have a sedan as a rental before I got my hatch, which solidified my desire to buy one. It was a great car as well but the hatch just suits my lifestyle better. And the fact that I get 37 MPG in an auto with bigger tires and wheels on it is simply amazing! What a great car!

Cheers! M2

BTW, How do the SMART and the Yaris compare (driving, I mean?)

by the way, fine color, that Absolutely Red!

The Yaris can basically out drive it in every way, except maybe stopping.

The Smart does do almost as well in corners and such. But it has two main problems. First the weight transfer in hard corners and slaloms is way too high. Second It's traction control is excessive, and can't be easily turned off. If you don't know how to drive a RWD car, I can see it's benefit, but for people that can it is way over controlling.

The Smart also give awesome road feel if that is what your looking for, and don't have speed bumps you drive over every day.

i never got a stare or inquire about what car i drive. They are everywhere, it's like a parasite, everybody knows what it is here.

although, i did drive to NYC with my Echo hatchback a few years ago.. nobody asked me what kinda car it was :(

I have only seen like 2 sedans and maybe 3 hatchbacks in my area... Don't seem to be all that popular (unless they're just driving at different times from me)...

No comments from strangers... Just friends/family who have called it:
egg
pod
eggshit (thanks dad)

Yanno, the usual stuff...

Not every MT is created equal, though!

It took me a embarassingly long time to adapt to my Yaris MT, although I've been driving MT's practically my whole life. :iono:

Very true. It was a little touchy at first but now it's second nature.

My sister is coming to visit for a few days and won't be getting a rental car. She said "I can just drive your little blue car while I'm there." Now I have to think about this... I told her it had a touchy clutch, but she drives a CRV and a Mini which are both manuals. I know she can drive stick, but I'm still a little apprehensive about turning over the keys to it. I think I might just let her drive it home from the airport so I can see how she handles it.

Good plan. I know what you mean. I used to hand over the keys to my Honda very easily, but this Yaris really takes a bit of getting used to. I drove my brother's Audi, a month ago and I got used to it in seconds. The Yaris is different.

Maybe if you tell her from the get go what to watch out for (if someone had told me even the mat slipping slightly under the clutch pedal could prevent me from switching gears, right from the get go, it would have saved me a lot of aggravation ) . It isn't us, though. Every MT driver I meet in person says the same thing. Something for Toyota to improve on next time

I guess that means if their car breaks down, or they don't have transportation for some reason, they won't want you to give them a ride in the Yaris, then ?

Eggshit is mean. It's not REALLY that small!! :iono:

Yeah, I live in the country. Me being 6'4 and 350 lbs, I get stares and giggles all the time... until I get out of the car. I guess there is something about a giant fat man getting out of a small car that startles people. Of course, I think 3/4 of the stares I get are from people looking at my car vibrating to pieces cause of my subs lol. I like it loud :headbang:

He drives an 03 Taco... Before that, 98 Jeep Chereokee, 92 Blazer, old Chevy Caprice station wagon. He's used to bigger vehicles...

So to him, my car is tiny! :iono:

That statement makes me feel old but at the same time it's an odd thing to say because while there is a difference between FWD and RWD it's not like knowing how to drive a manual vs. automatic.

I'm surprised you would say that as someone from a snow-laden state. In low traction situations FWD is more idiot proof , I mean safer than RWD. Especially on a light weight vehicle.

I just got complimented on it yesterday.

"That's a neat little yellow car you got there. What is it? A Yara Yar-wha? Who makes it?"

Then I lay it on him that it just made the trip from St. Louis to Indianappolis and back again on less than 10 gallons of gas. Around 54 MPG this trip.

My favorite thing about the car is still the electric steering.

I just thought it was an odd thing to say because while it makes perfect sense to ask someone "Know how to drive a stick?" it makes less sense to ask someone "Know how to drive an RWD/FWD?"

As for driving in snow, I won't take the Yaris out on the snow because I tried it once last year and slid straight through an intersection. Scared the shit out of me. Of course I didn't have winter tires on it and I'm not bashing FWD vehicles or the Yaris as this situation was more about the car not being prepared for winter driving.

To your point, I agree that FWD is better in the snow and wet than RWD.

Your point is why I dislike a lot of the modern safety features. People no longer need to know how to drive a car properly. But I will avoid hijacking this thread with my ranting , if you want me to ramble on about how our safety features make drivers unsafe start another thread and I will be happy to share my opinion.

I usually get "is that a hybrid". Kind of gets irritating. The worst though, was a friend of mine:
"Oh, is that a hybrid?"
"No."
next day
"Oh my friend was telling me how you drive a hybrid, hahaha you can't haul anything in that, what's the point?"
"it's not a hybrid, and it hauls ass..."
":O"
