View Full Version : Gear oil change choices (Canadians)

So im at the 63,500 km mark now, and wanna swap my stock tranny fluid with a synthetic gear oil...

I live in a town and cant find many (or ANY, lol) of the highly recommend brands... Redline, RP, etc. (And to order them online and have them shipped up here in Canada to me simply makes them cost too much in the end for me to want to purchase them.)

I'm stuck using what the local Wal-Mart or Canadian Tire has on the shelf, unfortunately.

Does anyone here have an opinion on Canadian Tire's MotoMaster Synthetic 75w90 gear oil?

Obvi it wont be as choice as using Redline MT-90, but its still gotta be better (and cheaper) than using the stock regular oil you get from the dealership, non? (Which, btw, is $18 a litre, LOL!)

Any improvement in shifting smoothness would be fantastic and greatly appreciated!

There were a few other options I could go with as well for synthetic gear oil... I'll post them here once I recall/check.

Also, I think MotoMaster Synth 75w90 specifies that its a GL-5 (but that its inclusive to include GL-4 too...)

From what I've read on here already, it seems with our Yarises you def wanna go with a proper GL-4 gear oil, not a GL-5 (even though it does work and is listed in the manual).

Seems ppl have stated on here that their shifts feel notchier and worse when they've used a GL-5 gear oil, but that things improved immediately and wonderfully once they switched to a GL-4 gear oil.

So what I'm wondering is that if all the synth gear oil products I can find locally specify that they are GL-5s, is it prolly better just to stick with the stock transmission oil that dealership is gonna pump into my Yaris?

Thanks for any responses and opinion. Greatly appreciated.

Why not just take a drive to the Toronto area and pick some up at a speed shop. Theres Bolton performance in Bolton that sells Redline products,i'd call first to see if they have what you want.

I would, but not a special trip *just for that*, unless i was already in or around the area. Otherwise im wasting far more in gas than the cost of prolly just shipping it in. Either way, shipping it in special or spending $20-30 on gas to get some in the GTA area, makes it not worth the price, imo.

MT-90...You must have a shop that can bring some in for you...

No one around me stocks it either, but I have my tech shop bringing some in for me...

If you seriously can't get MT-90 I was planning on getting 4 quarts anyways, so I could always send you a couple once my shop gets it in if you're interested...I don' know what their price is, but it will likely be less than retail...

You should use a GL4 for sure...

Cheers

Hmmm. Just talk to a regular shop and see eh? Maybe i will enquire. Might go out now and stop by a few places to ask. Thanks for that idea.

And THANK YOU for the offer of sending me some here. This could be a good solution, if the cost of shipping it aint too bad.

Thanks. I will keep this in mind. Gonna go out this afternoon and ask around some shops, see if any can or will order in MT-90 for me..

And thanks for confirming that i really DO want to stick with GL4 only, and not even bother with a GL5, as i suspected and have read around here.

(wonder why the manual suggests GL4 or GL5... must be because GL5 will technically work ok? (but its just that its truly not as good for our cars, then, as a GL4?)

Just an FYI, I am at 145,000km and I've had my tranny fluid checked and it has been analysed and determined to be OK.

So ... you don't really have to change it if you don't want to yet. :P

BTW I have an auto if that makes a difference!

FUNNY! Get this...

So went to Cdn Tire to inquire if they could bring in Redline MT-90 for me...

The guy couldnt find it in their computer system to even order... So he pulls out their manual ordering book for me... we look up the Redline oil section...

And I DID find an entry for Redline MT-90 gear oil... but it was NOT 75w90...

It was 70w80 (i think... if im remembering correctly (cant believe ive already maybe forgotten, lol.)

???

Huh... So does "MT-90" come in other weights/specs than 75w90 ?

Bc either it does, or this was a typo in their manual book...

But regardless, even tho it was in their ordering book, since it wasnt in the system (which is weird the guy said), i was told they cannot order it in anyways. So its a moot point for me.

Alas...

Go Here:
Redline Technical Information (http://www.redlineoil.com/techinfo.aspx)
Or go here:
Redline Manual Transmission Gear Oil PDF (http://www.redlineoil.com/content/files/tech/47.pdf)

MTL is a 70W80 gear oil.
MT90 is a 75W90 gear oil.

I specifically remember seeing Redline MTL too, and it being something like 70w80, yah..

So i def saw a MTL and a MT-90 listing in this official book.

But the MT-90 was DEFINITELY not listed at 75w90! 110% certain of that.

(I'm assuming then it must have been a typo..)

Amsoil and Redline are the two biggest and best products I hear abt ppl usnig and the ones I get recommended the most.

Too bad both are annoying (hard) to come by up in small town Canada. lol

Just curious about this Canadian tax thing, as I have heard this from others living in Canada that if they try and buy anything from the US they get screwed royally trying to get it sent there. What is the deal with that? Protectionist gov't? Why does the Canadian gov't care if you get a package from the US?

Of course I'd like you to go to TruLube.com to check out the AMSOIL gear lube. I'm not sure the cost once all the Canadian issues are factored in. But you'll be getting an exceptional product that will last.

And whats the YarisWorld consensus on Castrol 75w90 synth gear oil?

A good product? A good alternative to using the stock gear oil Toyota uses?

Ppl rave about MT-90... is Castrol considered a pretty decent choice too?

(sorry, im completely uneducated when it comes to most things cars... and that includes oils...)

the US gov. does the same thing but most products are available to you so you wouldn't need to self import and feel the pain.
Unfortunitely, many products find there way to Canada via US distributors, whether they be produced in the US or elsewhere worldwide. Hence, we often pay duties and taxes twice on of off-shore origin. Our market just isn't large enough to support distributors who could buy direct from manufactures, wherever they may be.

a decent motorcycle shop may carry a good gear oil, a few of the smaller ones round here randomly carry amsoil products.

shaft driven bikes use 75-90 in the rear end...
