Pretty much any cover will damage the paint if it's covered outside.

Dust settles into the fabric and onto the paint and then water and wind will make it act like sand paper.
I have a few $150 car covers. One on my 67 plymouth (stored indoors) and for my laser (stored outdoors) and after a while the paint on the laser looked like it was rubbed down with steel wool or bead blasted and it needed to be repainted. if it's stored indoors in like a bar or something like that a cover will be ok and help to keep dirdt and bird dropping off it.
Other then that don't use one.
