Found this, a turbo 1NZFE. The car is a Thai Vios, a Southeast Asia market-only car. It has basically the same internals as the old Echo. Here's an excerpt:


Now we come to the juicy bits. The 1.5 16 valve DOHC VVT-i 1NZ-FE engine has been turbocharged with light boost pressure as the compression ratio of the engine is still quite high for a turbo-ed engine at 10.5:1. Normal for a bolt-on setup. The ECU has been upgraded to detect boost and adjust air-fuel appropriately.

This results in 143 horsepower at 6400rpm and 196Nm of torque at 4400rpm. The gearbox is a 5-speed close ratio gearbox for maximum acceleration. This takes the car from 0-100km/h in 8.1 seconds. The car does the 400meter sprint at 15.9 seconds.

I suppose if you can lower the compression to something like 9:1 you could boost it up higher and get even better performance out of it.

that's one of the reasons the 1NZ cant be force fed large pressures is the compression ratio...

That changes the stroke and you will lose too much torque.

Better off changing the pistons to change the compression or simply rechamber the head domes.

yes it would, but it would have undesirable side effects, best thing would be to go with a lower compression piston... an 8.5:1 would probably be great for a FI 1NZ

I dunno... I seem to hold little faith in TRD these days, with the vehicles they've neglected, as well as their tendancy to price gouge for parts.

I'm new to the Toyota scene so my knowledge on the subject is limited, but so far I don't think they're all that bad. All of their parts so far seem to be competitively priced with other aftermarket options, however sparce they may be. I don't see Toyota neglecting the Yaris... the aftermarket demand goes up every time a male under the age of 30 buys one, and these days that line is blurring more and more. My stepdad is 38 and I just convinced him to put HID fogs on his 325xi, haha.

Case in point, look at the demographic this forum feeds off of. How much money is spent on YW.com alone in a week on the Yaris aftermarket? Better yet, ask the sponsor's wallets. :respekt:

But yes, when TRD does come out with a FI kit, I agree... it is going to be one expensive box.

Thicker head gaskets work as well, so long as you dont buy them from 'Freds Discount Gaskets'....
This doesnt usually net you too much in the CR department, only helps.
If your going to rebuild the engine look at buying a totalled xB and pull the motor.

As long as you don't overdo it on the boost, the OEM gasket should hold up fine, but if you want extra insurance I would get some better gaskets, and while you're at it, some better head bolts... I wonder if ARP makes some for the 1NZ-FE

Just to clear a couple of things up, Changing the length of the rods does not change stroke. Only a crank change will change stroke.
The best way to get lower compression would be from a dish piston will good solid valve reliefs and 2618 alloy.
That is what I designed for my Yaris for 9.5:1 compression and a turbo.

What you want is a Vitz Turbo 1500 (possibly local Japan market only). This is an excerpt of the Juicy Stuff: "More powerful brakes and a firmer suspension calibration were also fitted to the "RS", which was later modified by Toyota Racing Development (TRD) and outfitted with a turbocharger. Produced in limited numbers, the TRD-tuned "RS" produced 120 kilowatts (160 hp) of power and offered a 0–100 kilometres per hour (0–62 mph) time of 7.0 seconds." (Wikipedia)
