Here is the DIY for the projectors from Micro Image. This DIY was design for the sedan but most of the steps can be related to the LB as well. Perform at you own risk. If you have any questions feel free to ask or PM me.
Tools needed: 10mm socket
14mm socket (I think for negative battery terminal)
Ratchet (1/4" drive works fine)
Phillips screwdriver
Flat head screwdriver
Masking tape
Dremel
1.) Disconnect negative (-) wire from battery
2.) Lift vehicle (just the front end or the whole car)
3.) Apply masking take to bumper and fender (prevents paint from getting scratched)
4.) Remove these bolts from the front of the inner fenders with 10mm socket(1 on each side)
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/MASUMOBJ/PROJECTOR%20DIY/rsz_img00344-20090905-1512.jpg
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/MASUMOBJ/PROJECTOR%20DIY/rsz_img00345-20090905-1512.jpg
5.) Remove bolts from underside holding the bumper and underpanels on (no pic). I think theres about 6 or 8 of them.
6.) Remove 6 push rivets from the top of bumper under the hood. Push down in the middle of them and pull the whole thing out.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/MASUMOBJ/PROJECTOR%20DIY/rsz_img00342-20090905-1510.jpg
7.) Pull the sides of the bumper outwards to release. It should now look something like this:
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/MASUMOBJ/PROJECTOR%20DIY/rsz_img00346-20090905-1523.jpg
8.) Headlight removal. There are 3 10mm bolts holding each headlight on. 2 on top and 1 on the side and unplug 2 OEM connectors. If you have eyelids remove them at this time.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/MASUMOBJ/PROJECTOR%20DIY/rsz_img00352-20090905-1524.jpg
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/MASUMOBJ/PROJECTOR%20DIY/rsz_img00354-20090905-1525.jpg
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/MASUMOBJ/PROJECTOR%20DIY/rsz_img00351-20090905-1524.jpg
9.) Remove all factory wiring and bulbs from each headlight and the 3 screw from the edge of the back of the headlight.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/MASUMOBJ/PROJECTOR%20DIY/rsz_img00355-20090905-1553.jpg
10.) You should end up with this:
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/MASUMOBJ/PROJECTOR%20DIY/rsz_img00360-20090905-1621.jpg
11.) Remove the screw holding the headlight bulb clip. (You will not need these)
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/MASUMOBJ/PROJECTOR%20DIY/rsz_img00369-20090905-1802.jpg
12.) Now its time to bake your headlights. Preheat oven to 215-225 degrees. Once the oven is heated place one headlight at a time on a cookie sheet with aluminum foil. Set oven rack so the headlight will be as close to the center of the oven as possible. Bake for about 10 minutes.
13.) Remove from oven. CAUTION HEADLIGHT WILL BE HOT. Use a pair of gloves to handle it.
14.) Starting at one corner use a flathead screwdriver or butter knife and pry the lens from the housing. Don't be affraid to use a little force if necessary. Once you get on corner separated you can pretty much just pull the lens from the housing by hand and a little strength.
15.) Once removed you should have this:
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/MASUMOBJ/PROJECTOR%20DIY/rsz_img00361-20090905-1702.jpg
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/MASUMOBJ/PROJECTOR%20DIY/rsz_img00362-20090905-1703.jpg
16.) There are 3 phillips screw holding the reflector housing to the lens. Remove these and be careful not to lose. They are small.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/MASUMOBJ/PROJECTOR%20DIY/rsz_img00364-20090905-1710.jpg
17.) Remove reflector housing from lens. Sorry no pics.
18.) I don't remember but I think there are 2 more small phillips screw hold the reflector housing together. Remove these and pop out the reflector. Remove the headlight bulb reflector from the housing by prying up the two tabs and pushing the reflector out.
19.) This next part is up to you. You can paint any color. I used SEM satin black. Does not need to be a high temp paint.
20.) Mask of all around the headlight housing to prevent dust from sanding and paint from contacting sealant.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/MASUMOBJ/PROJECTOR%20DIY/rsz_img00370-20090905-1808.jpg
21.) Scuff sand all chrome parts of the headlight housing and reflector housing with 600 grit or higher sandpaper.
22.) Paint and allow to dry.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/MASUMOBJ/PROJECTOR%20DIY/rsz_img00365-20090905-1756.jpg
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/MASUMOBJ/PROJECTOR%20DIY/rsz_img00366-20090905-1756.jpg
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/MASUMOBJ/PROJECTOR%20DIY/rsz_img00372-20090905-1847.jpg
23.) Remove plastic from the projectors and unscrew and remove the 2 rings, washer, and H4 ring.
24.) Insert projector into headlight housing from the front and on the back install H4 ring, washer, threaded ring without the tabs (projector is labled top). Tighten all the way.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/MASUMOBJ/PROJECTOR%20DIY/rsz_img00374-20090905-1921.jpg
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/MASUMOBJ/PROJECTOR%20DIY/rsz_img00375-20090905-1922.jpg
25.) Reassemble the reflector housing and lens assembly.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/MASUMOBJ/PROJECTOR%20DIY/rsz_img00373-20090905-1901.jpg
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/MASUMOBJ/PROJECTOR%20DIY/rsz_img00376-20090905-1932.jpg
The reflector housing will have to be notched to accomodate the projector. No pics, but it you put the to parts together you will see. No big deal if you have a dremel.
26.) Remove masking tape from the headlight assembly. You can use and apply some of the sealant now or, like I did, wait until the headlights are assembled and run a bead around the outside.
27.) Back to baking. Put the headlights in the oven again at the same temperature for the same amount of time.
28.) Remove headlight from the oven and, while wearing some gloves, push the lens assembly into the headlight housing assembly while trying to line up the 3 screw holes and clips around the outside. Insert the screw and allow to cool.
29.) When finished it will look something like this:
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/MASUMOBJ/PROJECTOR%20DIY/rsz_img00386-20090905-2314.jpg
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/MASUMOBJ/PROJECTOR%20DIY/rsz_img00387-20090905-2314.jpg
30.) Now for the wiring. Reinstall the factory harness into each headlight housing, don't forget the factory grommet, along with the HID bulb and screw ring with the tabs on it.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/MASUMOBJ/PROJECTOR%20DIY/rsz_img00399-20090906-0025.jpg
31.) The projector kit comes with a pack of phillips screws. Use one on each headlight to mount the ballast on the bottom.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/MASUMOBJ/PROJECTOR%20DIY/rsz_img00393-20090906-0007.jpg
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/MASUMOBJ/PROJECTOR%20DIY/rsz_img00395-20090906-0018.jpg
32.) The HID harness with the long power wire goes on the passenger side.
33.) Run the single red power wire to the battery and attached them to the positive (+) post. I ran the passenger side along the firewall and the drivers side behing the battery.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/MASUMOBJ/PROJECTOR%20DIY/rsz_img00392-20090905-2339.jpg
34.) Passenger side. Attach the single black ground wire to the strut tower (make sure to grind down to bare metal) and mount the black relay box on top of the ground wire utilizing the threaded hole already there. The bolts in the kit fit perfectly.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/MASUMOBJ/PROJECTOR%20DIY/rsz_img00397-20090906-0018.jpg
35.) Driver's side single black gound wire. There is already a ground wire, by I think its the airbag sensor, you can use.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/MASUMOBJ/PROJECTOR%20DIY/rsz_img00391-20090905-2339.jpg
36.) Plug all the other wires together, except the single red and black wires with no terminal and bare wire showing.
37.) Now for the halos. The single red and black wires with no terminals. Use the provide wire splicers or you can solder. Attach the black wire to the white wire w/black strip (-) coming out of the connector for the signal lights and the red wire to the green wire (+) on the opposite corner of the connector.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/MASUMOBJ/PROJECTOR%20DIY/rsz_img00382-20090905-2029.jpg
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/MASUMOBJ/PROJECTOR%20DIY/rsz_img00383-20090905-2029.jpg
I zip tied the wire splicers then wrapped them in electrical tape to prevent them from coming undone.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d155/MASUMOBJ/PROJECTOR%20DIY/rsz_img00385-20090905-2307.jpg
38.) Bolt the headlight assemblies back on with the 3 bolts each and reinstall the bumper.
39.) End result:

That looks awesome. Well done on doing it yourself and making a DIY for other people to follow.
I think someone should start making pre-made ones with these kits for people to buy for people who aren't keen to DIY. Instead of those ones made in Taiwan.

Took me about 6-7 hours. Taking my time and making sure everything was right. With the DIY it can probably be done in 3-4 hours

5000K is more white. The ones in the pics are 6000k which have a hint of blue but mostly white.

Probably not since brian was kind of enough to do this DIY. However, I might because mine is a liftback. If I encounter anything different from his DIY, i'll be sure to take pics and write something.

You should do one to show how to take apart the headlights and work with them

I figured it out on the first try. I thought the halos were gonna be hard but they weren't. Just tap into 2 wires on each light and every thing else just plugs together. Only fits on way.

I am still looking for another set of headlights on ebay looks like its about 45 to 115 the average on price. any cheaper then that before I buy any of them
PETERPOOP
09-06-2009, 08:26 PM
i dont think they come any cheaper;but i don't think you need to buy them either. i only set my oven to 215 and preheat for 10 minutes and let the headlights sit in there for 4 min and that was enough time to pry it open. all ovens are different so you have to decide how long you want to put them in there for. one of the headlights actually melted in the back a little bit after only being in there for four minutes. so keep an eye on it

Yeah, I meant "think". Fixed it now. The halos are very bright. I tried taking some pics of them from the front but they ended up looking like the actual headlight was on so I had to do it from the sides.

i used a dremel to cut a notch in the relector housing and to sand the paint off a spot for the grounging point. I'm sure you can get by with a flat file though. just might take a little longer.

I tried to adjust them but since the projectors hit the reflector housing they barely went lower than
the factory setting. I liked the height of the cut off so I left it alone. Just got back from a night drive
and I saw absolutly no glare and a perfect cut off. The cut off height is perfect and doesn't shine
into other peoples mirrors. A huge improvement from running my previous HIDs in the stock
housing. With my previous HIDs there was glare all over the place and would constantly shine
Into other driver's mirrors. With the projectors there is plenty of light on the road. I must
recommend that anyone with HIDs upgrade to these projectors, atleast for the safety and courtesy
of the other driver's.

Hey brian, I've never had an HID kit before, so I was wondering if this was normal; When I turn on the low beams, it takes a few seconds to "warm up." It's not as bright at first. But then the projectors get brighter gradually, until it's peak. Are you experiencing this too? Or is this even normal?
Also, i've had this happen a couple of times; when I go to just turn the halos on, they won't turn on immediately. Maybe a few seconds, then they pop on. I know those don't have to "warm up," because I usually can just turn the halos on and they turn on right away. However, one time I tried to turn the halos on, and they didn't turn on. It wasn't until I flipped my lights on all the way ( to turn the low beams on ), is when the halos went on too. Then I turned the projectors off and just left the halos on, and it seemed to work fine after that. Very strange. It can't be a wiring issue, because all the lights DO work. It just depends on how long they want to take for them to eventually turn on ( the halos ). Hopefully this isn't a sign of bad things to come? dun dun dun.......
On a positive note, I've had many compliments on the headlights. I am extremely glad I went with blacking out the housings, and it gives my car a much more sportier, less eco-box feel IMO!!!!!!!!

I had this problem too and culprit it's at the controller (square size little black box) that comes with the wiring harnesses. While having the issue of slow respond on the Halo (left side only), it will slowly died off.
Just to make sure that Box was the culprit, you can switch between the two Box to see which ones are faulty. There's a connector on the bottom of the box so just unplug them, not the whole wiring. Hope this helps.

I haven't had any problems with my halos so far. The only thing I can suggest is to double check
and make sure there are no loose wires.

Thanks Brain , i had already copied that one , i was hoping to get one with both head lights lined up , your drivers side is way to low
Its actually perfect while driving. High enough on the passenger side to light up road signs but low enough not to shine into peoples windows or mirrors.

Brian, you should adjust that drivers side, you will see a huge difference in the way the road lights up. I am surprised you got it to go that low without popping the adjustment screw out of the socket behind the reflector bowl. I did that on mine and I was not even close to that far down, I could not go any lower than the drivers side you see in the 4th pic and right below that I popped the adjuster screw out. Had to reopen the headlight and fix it, was kind of a pain in the butt.
I will lower the passenger side when I get a new set of headlights in a few months. I didn't want
to cut into the reflector housing at the time to lower it more. I was surprised too at how low they
came out.

1nz the housings these projectors came in were RHD. The cutoff shield is for LHD but the RHD housings were rotated so the projectors shined up on the left. I don't know if yours is the same or not. It may be hard to understand what I am saying so I will post a pic of the cutoff in the RHD projectors and hope this helps.
The first pic, 3 black circles shows how the h4 grooves are rotated to the right allowing more light to shine on the left and less on the right. You can see the cutoff shield how it is angled. The shield is on the bottom but when the light comes out of the projector it is upside down. The housing was sitting flat for this pic.
2nd pic is the housing sitting flat so you can see how the cutoff would look in a RHD housing. This would probably work without blinding oncoming traffic but the proper way would be to have the cutoff shield going the opposite direction, I don't know if they make these or not. Would need to ask someone who has stock hid in RHD housing.
3rd pic is the same projector in a LHD housing, 3 black circles show how the h4 grooves are flat. It looks like it goes to the left but it is because the whole housing was rotated when I took the pic, but it is not rotated left or right. I hope this helps. If you have any more questions you can pm me or post in here if brian does not care.

Thanks for that Camel , but if i can't get the right cut off , then it's not worth the risk .
i do to much night driveing , to take short cuts on lighting ,
not to mention the fact it would not get a road worthy cert like that .
which it requires to pass every 12months .

You may have to cut a piece out above the reflector so the projector doesn't hit it and so you can lower the cut off. You'll see when you go to put then back together. I see you didn't remove the rings before you tried to put the projector in.

Did you make sure that your high beam cable is connected on the side that does not work? If it is connected properly, try plugging in a regular H4 bulb (have a friend hold it while wearing rubber gloves just in case the base gets hot) into the socket and try the high beams. If they work, then there is something wrong with the high beam cable. If they don't work, then there's a problem somewhere on the car.
For the the parking light, find the wires that go to the parking lights, snip them (make sure the battery is disconnected), and solder/connect the halo ring wires in place. There might be another, better solution, but that's the one that came to mind first.

for the high beam it's special because the light in the cluster does not come ON when i put the highbeam on!

Hi, I opened my headlights, paint and install the projectors. After 3 weeks, water or condensation appeared in the left headlight, remove the headlight for two days I let it dry and apparently went all the moisture so I went back to put silicone around.
Wash the car today morning and in evening note that the two headlights had moisture in and also the left angel eye is not starting.
What do you recommend or suggest? How can I solve this problem and prevent the more moisture?
Thank you.

Make sure you push the lens into the housing all the way, and that the three screws all screw into place (one of my screws in each headlight won't screw into place, so I'm thinking that's what is causing my condensation problem). Also, the portion of the housing that engulfs the lens, make sure that's pinched down onto the lens.

guys i just installed HID 6000k last weekend and i noticed the glare and i think i am blinding the other drivers. This thread is talking about HID+projectors kit at once. Can I install projectors only so I don't have to buy the whole kit? any help asap please. I asked a friend of mine and he told me that the people who do it in our country will not do it correct to change the headlamps to have projectors in it. He mentioned that it needs to be aligned or something that I have to align the projectors itself. Any help would be appreciated.
