But I can't say no to these if I find a bar serves: Spaten Oktoberfest, Pacifico, Anchor Steam, Asahi, Fosters

Only been to Crown City Brewery in Pasadena a few times before it closed. Someday I wanna check out the Guiness brewery in Ireland :drinking:

My brother lives in Corona, so I'll definitely have to remember to stop by there. I love a good Red. If you ever get a chance, pick up Green Flash's Hop Head Red. As a bit of bitterness like an IPA, but has a wonderful flavor. And, it's a San Diego brew!

All the NorCal places we visited this summer were awesome.

If you like hoppy brews, you **must** try Moylan's Hopsickle. It's a triple IPA. Plus, Moylan's is located in Novato (just north of San Fran).

Kasey, I don't know if anyone mentioned it in this thread already but next time you're in the Bay Area, you should try the Marin Brewing Co. in Marin County.

http://www.marinbrewing.com/index2.php

From San Francisco, take a ferry boat to Larkspur, walk over there... VOILA!! They used to have Jazz on Friday after work in the summer, so the locals would hang out outside the pub and dance, kind of a family event, as well.

Funny story about that... My bf and I planned to go there for lunch on our way back to SF from Santa Rosa. However... our plans the day before changed all that. We planned to start at Ace in the Hole Cider around lunch time, then go to 3rd Street AleWorks, then to Russian River (to grab a beer a friend told us about: "Consecration" a sour ale aged in cabernet barrels). We were going to go to Moylan's for Dinner, but the glass of consecration caused my bf to call an early evening. haha BTW, Consecration is NO laughing matter... it's definitely not for the faint of heart!

So.. Moylan's took priority (since Hopsickle is my bf's favorite beer) and we went there for lunch the next day instead of Marin and plan to go to Marin on our next trip. I love the idea of taking the ferry over anyway! I think it may have worked out for the best after all.

@ OP: consecration... OK I'll keep that in mind :)

Yeah, there is a lot of good beer in the area. Too bad it's wasted on me, though

You might put the question to Yelp.com as well, and see what comes up before your next trip. I was racking my brain trying to remember which brewery I visited up in Sonoma County, a few years back, but I just can't remember anymore. It was on Hwy 12 (between Santa Rosa and Sonoma), worth the detour. Small business, nice people. I love it up there in the wine country, it's really friendly, real nice. I prefer wine to beer, and of course, up there there is a lot of that up in Sonoma County. Funny thing is I'm not a big drinker, but when good wine is cheap and abundant, then you find yourself with a glass in your hand a lot more often. ;)

Got some info on Stone's Vertical Epic Ale for 09/09/09 and it sounds great!

http://blog.stonebrew.com/?p=1202

For those that don't know, Stone is brewery in SoCal (San Marcos) and they come out with a Vertical Epic Ale every year since 02/02/02. It's brewed in limited batches and changes every year.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3488/3792542081_7061634658.jpg

Stone 09.09.09 Vertical Epic Ale

The Stone 09.09.09 Vertical Epic Ale is a bit of departure from the last two Stone Vertical Epic Ale editions, which were golden in color. The newest one can best be described as a Belgian style Imperial Porter. The beer is deep brown, with intense roasted character provided by chocolate malt.

During the brewing process, we also added dark candi sugar, vanilla bean, and tangerine peel to complement the flavors of the porter. The vanilla bean addition is fascinating, as it actually enhances the chocolate character from the roasted malts, and the candi sugar adds a nice hint of molasses flavor to the finish. The tangerine actually turned out to be quite subtle on the finish (and didn’t impart as much of an orange flavor as we reported earlier), and combines nicely with the chocolate malt character. We aged this beer on French Oak chips, which contributes a smooth and subtle woody undertone and even more vanilla flavors.

All in all the Stone 09.09.09 Vertical Epic Ale is a very complex beer, the flavors evolve and develop as the beer warms in your glass, making the enjoyment of it a very fun and delicious experience!

Appearance:
This beer pours deep brown with a thick, frothy, creamy head of tan foam.

Aroma:
Many layers, starting off with chocolate and coffee from the chocolate malt, and vanilla notes from both the vanilla bean and French Oak. A balanced oak flavor comes through in the mix. As the beer warms, the influence of the Belgian yeast is more evident, as tropical fruit and spice flavors become more pronounced.

Flavor:
Begins with chocolate roast malt character and vanilla. The vanilla accentuates the chocolate nicely. Layered in are banana esters, and hints of clove, and then the finish is a bit stronger on the oak with hints of molasses and citrus from the tangerine peel.

Palate:
Medium body, very complex, and finishes very smooth. The 8.7% alcohol is not overly evident, and the flavors blend together nicely.

Overall:
A delicious, complex beer. It should age nicely over the next three years, and the flavors should continue to meld together wonderfully.

This thread needs some east coast representation on here. Breweries i've been to:

Yuengling, River Horse, Philadelphia Brewing, Victory, Ommegang.

What you will find in my beer fridge currently:
Unibroue Rousse Ale, various offerings from Paper City Brewing in Western Mass, Tecate, Foster's Special Ale, Bells Porter and Unibroue La Fin Du Monde.

What you will find in my beer stash waiting to go in my beer fridge:
Saranac IPA/Black & Tan/Black Forest/Brown Ale/Pale Ale/Adirondack Lager, Shock Top, Labatt Blue, PBR (in a can of course)..

Victory has a fantastic German Pilsner called Prima Pils. If you can get your hands on a bottle, I highly recommend it. Their Hop Wallop and Sunrise Weizenbock aren't too shabby either.

I like the beers from Belgium. Wheat beers, trappist are great. Here in the GTA area we have many Micro breweries, and the make great beers. Steamwhistle, Creemore Springs, and Mill street make cool beers and have good tours if ever you are in the Toronto area.

As a few have confessed.. I too have been a home brewer for awhile.. I enjoy darks Not much for the lights.

I normally try to emulate the following...
Guiness (a once a year tradition for the toast)
Harp
Wexford Irish Cream Ale (out of the norm..goes down like warm apple juice)
Boulevard

Can't do IPA.. For some reason it all tastes like Grapefruit.

Sorry I have to add how domestic light beers was first described to me.

Drinking Bud Light, Coors or Lone Star is like Sex in a canoe... Its F'ing close to water. f

Magic Hat #9 is some great stuff, I had the pleasure to have it straight from the keg, at exactly 34 degrees. Makes for some good stuff!

I work now in sales for a Budweiser Distribution company, and I have seen a lot of decent beers go no where. Kona Beer Company makes some good stuff, their seasonal products are to die for (Pipeline Porter and Wialua Wheat), although their Pale Ale isnt too bad.

A lot of Kona is brewed here in Portland by Widmer.

I recently drank a New Glarus Wisconsin Belgian Red. God's gift to alcohol. It's one of my all-time favorite beers.

Repeat visits/Special beer trips:

Moylan's (Novato, CA)
Russian River Brewery (Santa Rosa, CA):
Every February they release Pliny the Younger (a triple IPA) only at their brewpub. If you check it out on rate beer or any site, it is one of the highest rated beers you will come across. I decided that I HAD to be there for this year's release! The brewery had a record number of people turn out for this release, including people who drove from the East coast and those who travelled all the way from Europe. By 7pm, the taps ran dry (which was hooked directly to the brewing tanks). They never imagined they would run out of the beer the first day.

Pliny the Younger: Triple IPA @ 10.75% sold only in 1/2 pints.

The line at 10:30am Friday 2/5/10 (brewery opens at 11am)

Sounds like an awesome bar. If you like IPAs, seek out Russian River's Pliny the Elder (double IPA), Moylan's Hopsickle (triple IPA), or Victory's Hop Devil (I think it's a single IPA). Three great go-to IPAs.

Sam Adams has a Blackberry Wit (wheat style) beer that's pretty good. Otherwise there's a Cascade Blackberry Ale (Belgian style). I think those are the only blackberry beers I can think of off the top of my head. Of course, Lambic/Framboise are popular in fruit flavors like that, but I mostly know of them in the popular raspberry flavors. The ciders I've come across are usually apple, pear, or berry.

OP! Excellent choices of beer favorites...

I would say my favorites are the IPA's also, followed by a close second the Belgians! You are very fortunate that you have some decent Western breweries in your general area! We got some good ones here in PA too.

My favorite for IPA is Victory Brewing Company in Downingtown, PA. The HopDevil IPA... Mmmm. I love it when I head out to Philly area, too bad I don't know anyone who lives there! http://victorybeer.com/

We have a decent one here in State College called Otto's Brewery. It's small and they only have several beers, but wow... the "Double D IPA" is awesome! And when they make the "Triple D" I'm in heaven:-) I fill up two growlers everytime I go there...
http://www.ottospubandbrewery.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=3&Itemid=4

My all time favorite for IPA comes out of Boston, MA. Harpoon's Leviathan Imperial IPA. Paramount IMHO! The balance of hops along with the correct malt balance... what a flavor to the palate. And it's not weak. The alcohol by volume is 10%, with IBU's of 122! Can't wait to visit Boston... maybe I'll take the 8 hr trip in my Yaris soon:-)
http://www.harpoonbrewery.com/index.cfm/page/Beer/pid/28467

My favorite when it comes down to Belgian beer bar (love those Monks and those yummy Trappist hops) is located less than 130 mi away... Sharp's Edge Belgian Bar in Pittsburgh, PA. I go to the Emporium... my friend lives one block away... Yay! Not only do they have hundreds of bottled beers from around the world, they have 30 Belgium Ales solely on tap! My favorite Belgian bottle there is simply "Orval"... Notre-Dame d'Orval... Only one beer made by that brewery. IMHO, one of the best Belgian beers and from the oldest Trappist breweries in the world. Dry, but the flavor changes in your mouth as you drink. Check out the "Taps" and "Bottles" from the Beer Emporium...

Being a girl, not the 'greatest' fan of beer - Especially some of the Aussie beers that we cop over here (eg: VB) ... But I was introduced to fruit beer when I was over in the UK at the start of the year and love it!

Favourite beers are:

Fruli (Belgium)
Floris (Belgium)

Breweries Visited:

Guiness Storehouse - Dublin
Meantime Brewery - London
Bridge Road Brewery - Beechworth, AU

Where I am from, it's mostly wineries but there are a few little breweries hidden around the place.

When my boyfriend and I were OS earlier in the year, we spent 4 days/3 nights in Dublin. It was when there were the massive snow storms and the weather was absolutely terrible, so all the tours were cancelled and we could see only the bare minimum of the touristy stuff... We decided to not let the weather get us down, and set a challenge to see how many pubs/breweries/distilleries we could visit in the 3 nights (nights only, so we could try see as many sights as we could given the weather) while we were there. Managed to hijack a pub crawl thanks to our accents and visit a total of 22 pubs, having a drink at all of them. The atmosphere was absolutely amazing and it was a great way to try beers we wouldn't normally have tried; it was definitely the best few days of our trip!

Being a girl is no excuse to not like beer. It's like, because you're a girl you can't be into cars or sports. Which, in my opinion, is just a product of how children are raised (blue path vs pink path) and completely absurd. (Sorry, I have a degree in Human Development/Sociology... don't get me started. lol)

I'm so jealous that you've been to the breweries you've visited! I can't wait until I can go on a trip to England/Ireland/Germany for some of the breweries high on my list to visit. I have heard that Australia is more known for their wine rather than beer, and importing costs are high. But I'm glad you found some stuff you like! I live by a motto of "I'll try anything at least once" definitely applies to beers. I tried some one trip that I found to be disgusting (Russian River's Consecration - A dark SOUR beer aged in cabernet barrels), but second time around.... I love it. Go figure.

Thanks for you post! I definitely will look up those other beers and see if I can get my hands on them since I'm not too familiar with them.

Haha! I definitely understand that! I think I just haven't become the greatest fan since the first beers I tasted were the likes of VB/Carlton Draught, etc.. Which even my mates say they only drink because it's cheap! That being said, if we go anywhere and the boys grab a few different beers, I will give them a try. I do like some of the wheat beers, and absolutely love cider! They're definitely worth a try! I think Fruli may be difficult to get your hands on, but Floris is imported quite readily - They have some interesting flavoured beers, including chocolate!!

The Guinness Storehouse was amazing and definitely a must-visit, as is the Jameson Distillery if you're ever in Dublin!

That's definitely true! Where I am, there are a heap of the bigger wineries such as All Saints, Brown Brothers, Boyntons, etc all within 30 mins-1 hrs drive, as well as all the smaller more boutique wineries. There is so much competition though, and with the drought/bush fires a lot of them have been decimated over the past few years! :frown: I do hope to get a chance to go to a few more breweries/wineries around here over spring/summer when things have quietened down Uni wise!

I support the local beer. 100% made in Puerto Rico ---> Medalla Light :drinking:

Made it to Zeno's Pub in State College.

Had a bottle of the Bear Republic's Hop Rod Rye! Very good! I found it to be a very hoppy beer! The rye was distinctive and bended well... not too malty!

Next time I'll have to try a bottle of the Racer 5, they have it...

Racer X (Double IPA) also looks really good? A malty IPA... Hopefully, they will get some soon :-P

Cheers!

Yayyy! Glad you were able to find the Bear Republic beers!

I'm lucky enough to live five minutes from the Frederick branch of Flying Dog Brewery and just down the road a bit is the Dogfish Head Restaurant!

Favorite flavors: D.F.H. Indian Brown Ale, Flying Dog's Old Scratch, Sam Smith's everything really. Last but not least Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy, soooo good!

This thread is awesome!

I love, love, love Dogfish Head beers! Totally jealous! I adore their 90 minute IPA and Festina Peche. Mmmm.

Ask and ye shall receive. Not my pic btw. Its just my favorite ale.

Stone is such a great brewery. I don't think they have a single beer that I don't like. I'm surprised I haven't made it south to their brewery since it's local for me.

A buddy came down from Boston, MA several weeks ago to watch a Penn State home game. He had a large beer list for all of us... My favorite IPA happens to be from Harpoon Brewery in Boston... Leviathan Series - Imperial IPA. When made these batches go off the shelf very quick. They were all sold out in Boston, but he found some in another distributor in western Mass before he came down to PA...

In my book this is the tops of tops when it comes down to Double IPA's. My tasting rate is a firm 10! The best! I can't describe it. The flavors change from temperature drops. It explodes in your mouth of the foral, bitterness balanced hops with a smooth carmel malt flavor. The Simcoe Hops are awesome... Now I have four four-pacs to savor over the winter!

Paramount IPA! :w00t: :headbang:  :respekt:

Has anyone experienced the same? Do they feel what I feel?

Cheers!
