Cleaning rear lens and sealing it back

hi guys, i need to remove the sealant on the rear lights, take out the lens and do some cleaning but i'm not sure what type of sealant is suitable to seal the lens back to the housing. some advise will be greatly appreciated.

and btw i'm cutting thru the original sealant, not baking it.

please, please please bake it.


just set the oven for about 350 turn it on let it get to temp. then turn it off and place the lens in there about 15 minutes.


the adhesive will be easier to remove also.

If you don't bake it you're taking an extremely high chance of cracking the lens.
Bake it at 215 for 5-10 mins. Much easier that cutting.

I think 350 is on the dangerous side, but that's from what I've read, I haven't tried it myself! (PeterPoop got a little melting at a lower temp, for example)

i said turn it off and let it sit in the over while cooling from 350

all weather silicone clear or black your preference.

if you're going to cut it, you're going to have a hell of a time removing the already installed sealent and you're not going to have a nice seal when you put it back. but who knows you might surprise yourself :biggrin:

You can use a heat gun or hair dryer.

Yes. You gotta experiment with a lower temp if you haven't done this before in your oven. Everyone told me 225-230 preheat for 10 min,and then leave the headlights in there with it still at 220-225. I preheated at 225 and turned it down to 220 and left it in there for only 4 min, and one of my headlights started to melt in the back! This is a pic where I had to epoxy some plastic to "patch" the melted areas. All ovens are different!

when i paint the headlights of my old tiburon i set the oven at 150 and wait about 6 to 7 minutes... dont open so easy but never melt

When I baked my headlights I did it at 215 preheat until oven was ready (about 6-8mins) I would assume it varies by brand. Mine beeps when is ready. Then baked headlights for 4mins on the dot. I had no melting and it came of pretty easy.

its so funny u guys talkin about bakin it looks like a food channel...btw i didnt bake my headlights to remove them i used my gilrfriends hair dryer and they came out clean but had to be back n forth with it for a bit
