I've owned my car for almost one full year now. I kept track of all the gasoline I purchased, mileage, etc. This is what I have to share.

HOLY SHIT I actually cant belive you took the time to do all that GREAT JOB how long did it take you to build that charts full of data?

Minor nitpick- I think you mean 5.9 cents per mile, not fifty-nine hundredths of a cent.

I just like the cent sign. I guess I should move the decimal over for that to make, "cents." =]

It took me about 30 seconds, lol. Making the spreadsheet took me about a half hour, then ever 10 days or so when I buy gas I just add the new data (miles traveled, gallons bought, price per gallon -- everything is calculated and graphed for me). The charts, and averages I set up to make themselves as data was added.

Also, I forgot to mark it when I did it, but about half way through I started keeping my tires at 50 PSI.

Sodium Duck -- So would you say that it was of any advantage to change to synthetic oil? I didn't see any significant change in fuel mileage after the switch. After the break-in period it looks like you may have improved a little.

Nice... im keeping track too with my myTouch 3g using a program called Mileage. I'll post it in a year from when I started keeping track. ^^

Great spreadsheet. Interesting is that as your mileage reached around 9000 your miles per gallon improved. Did you change your driving habits ...as your report shows they continued to improve.
Thanks for sharing.

I believe around that point I stopped using neutral to coast, that was a biggie.

Around there I starting experimenting more with hypermiling as well. I started anticipating red lights and coasting longer, driving like I don't have brakes, taking off slower from starts, etc. Oh, and putting my tires up to 50 PSI, I definitely saw a gain there -- it was just easier for me to get 38-39 MPG tanks, where before I had to struggle to get them. For about the last 10 or so tanks I've also had an Ecometer, which has been a HUGE help.

I honestly never noticed a difference after switching to synthetic. Some people claim there's an improvement of 1-2 MPG. I say something smells there. Gas mileage fluctuates 1-2 MPG from tank to tank anyways. You'll never notice a difference even if there was one. I use synthetic because I change my oil every 7,500 miles now. =]

Good stuff, Sodium, very nice. As an aside, I noticed a 5% increase just with a tire change, and I didn't go looking for the "best" mileage tires, so there is more to gain yet...

Nice job, SD!

I'm doing the same thing. I have logged every single fill-up since the day I took delivery of the car brand new. The car had 8525 miles on it when I filled it up last.

GOOD JOB but isn't 50PSI in those tires a bit dangerous?

Let's not open that debate up... lol. I'm just posting what I do.

Again, Thanks for sharing the info on the reasons for increased mpg.

oh come on.. we haven't had a good "hypermiling myths vs science" debate in a while

It is tempting... anyone care to make an opening statement?

Duck,

I'm running 50 psi as well, up from 44 sidewall max. I think this may be the best, cheapest mpg upgrade there is!

Ecometer is awesome- made a big difference for me.

Syn oil may get a tenth or two extra mpg if the level of friction modification is comparable to the dino one was running previously. I'm running a highly friction modified 20 wt and honestly I doubt it's getting me more than 4 tenths and probably less. The big advantage in my opinion is the extended drain capability and the increased cleanliness of the syns which will help preserve mpg in the long run.

Great job keeping record-it's cool to have access to this kind of thing! I'm tracking mine regularly as well.

Thanks!
