subaru contributed the components for the rear wheel drive set up (they produce great rear wheel drives for cheap), i doubt toyota would put a subaru engine in there, i guess we still have to wait and see what this bad boy is really made of.

First of all....It has to start at the same price as the TC does and secondly lighter than 3000 pounds. Then I'll buy it.

I see this starting in the 23-24k area.

ya, look at a 25k pricetag...

No way this thing will be a TC. More than likely it will be a Celica.

Oh and if you want Toyotas most powerful 4cyl...2.5L 179hp, 171 tq...Impressive over the 2AZ...but worthless.
I feel this is no different honestly when Toyota had to look outside of their company to build a decent motor for the VVTL-I projects (GT-S Celica/XRS Rolla, Matrix/Vibe GT)

Except they finally wised up that if you want a sports car heritage motor, go with the company that builds them all day long, year after year. Subaru...plus this is the first joint project they have fully designed and started to put into production stages.

The motor is going to be a subi 2.0L motor and is the size pretty much between the Nissan 370Z and the Mazda Miata except unlike those 2 it has a rear seat. No info on weight yet. Price tag between 24k-29k.

This is a tribute car (kind of) to the AE86 so I don't think it is going to replace anything in their line up only an addition.

Looks too much like an RX-8 IMO

Very nice interior though. Especially like the design of the steering wheel and gauge cluster

Honestly, thats a far stretch of that kind of function coming to life. If it does, the car just got thrown into the $28k range.

I say leave the car RWD, just give us a decent 6spd and LSD, call it a day and let the tuner world improve upon the rest.

Personally, I don't like the styling.

If seems as if Toyota could not decide if they wanted to bulid a sporty looking coupe or a boring family oriented coupe like the Scion.

Toyota cannot price this in the same range as the Genesis coupe. The yota will not sell. You get more from the genesis for the same price.

You guys do realize this is a concept, still in mid range design. Do people here remember the early and mid phase concepts the R35 GTR went through?? I have Japanese car magazines (Zaa Mai Kaa) from my visit to Japan back in Summer 2006, and the concept build has had some dramatic and mild changes to the overall car (exterior and interior) since 2006. This isn't the final outlook of the car.

The front reminds of the Lexus SC successor concept, especially the headlights.

Whenever this badboy comes out, in close to concept shape, I'm getting it or trading in my Yaris even if I have to be in debt...again :P

Yeah but Hyundai is moving up now plus they offer the 10 year 100,000 mile warranty. Don't forget the choice of engines too. For $22,000.00 you get the 2.0 turbo with 210hp and 223 lb/ft of torque plus a lot of standard features. You have to remember the the original 86 was basically a 2-door corolla. So I think it would only be fair if they priced it slightly higher than a corolla. Even though they use completely different chassis. The point of them or any car manufacturers to team up together to develop a car is to bring the cost of the car down. If it starts at 18500.00 I'll buy it.

Your right about that, but over here the dealer (courtesy toyota) has lifetime warranty, barely any strings attached, unlike Hyundai's warranty, and if it does come out for cheaper than expected, than it will be the best seller of its class IMO

Yeah but not all toyota dealers offer it and if they do you pay extra. I think the hyundai warranty is standard. Not to mention the power potential of the 2.0 turbo.

3 years ago toyota bought 8 percent of shares of subarus stock. thats how they got the sweet deal with subaru designing the engine.

the day this goes into production is the same day i sell the yaris. so be prepared for a part out sometime in 2011

I read somewhere that the EJ20 in the FT-86 will have a new re-worked head from Toyota

Sabretooth
10-14-2009, 07:53 PM
YA, they are looking for an EJ20 or EJ25...either way, they want near 200hp

AWD and a turbo would be a nice homage to all the great All Trac Turbo Toyotas of yore. Some great sports cars back in the day. Hell, some great 4WD Tercell's too.

the subaru version is very close to production styling....not liking the back for some reason, but then again, Subaru was always more leaned towards functionality than aesthetics...

Personally rather have the Subie Version, seeing it probably will have more aftermarket appeal. Although with a $5,000 more pricetag

Plus it looks really unrefined, it its current lack of curves, I dont see many wanting to buy it first, then the Sexy Toyota version come out later...

yea that looks hideous, tho i think the toyota concept looks nice...
here was my predictions btw ;D http://yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20514

to be honest, a subaru engine just seems odd; it won't have the toyota reliability like all their other cars have; why can't it just have a v-6 lexus engine stuffed in there? now that'd be like a supra!
