When i get in the car in the morning, i start it up, and drive away. The problem i am having is with the transmission not shifting into 4th gear. The first 2 miles of my drive each morning (about a mile of that the engine cold light is on, the other mile it isn't) the car will not shift into 4th gear. It stays in 3rd and the rpms reach about 3,800 to 4,000. After the 2 miles, it will finally shift into 4th gear. Is there anything wrong, or is this normal for the cold morning?

please search... there have been many many threads on this.

the auto transmission will not shift into fourth gear while the "cool" light is on.

the engine needs to be properly warmed up for the transmission to be allowed to shift into fourth.

I suggest starting the car 5 minutes ahead of time.

no probs. just start 'er up earlier before you leave to warm things up and you will be good to go.

Your "Problem" is in the owners manual, and it also says to not warm up the engine, as stated above your getting 0 MPG when the engine is running and the wheels are not turning!

how bout just driving a bit slower for 5 minutes instead of sitting and idling and wasting gas and engine for 0 miles? the temp goes optimal within 4 minutes of driving

Sometimes you can't drive 5 mins before going fast. For example, I live right off a hwy, and only have 500m to the road before it hits 80km/h. There is no way I would be able to drive slow.

So I just plug my car in at night and let it sit for a couple of minutes in the morning.

I hate merging n the freeway with my Yaris, I really do, especially around here where people drive like @ssholes and go out of their way NOT to let you in :mad:

This is the only time I wish I had a bigger engine. :frown:

80kmh is fine, it keeps it at 3000rpm.
i work at 4.5KM from home.. my engine barely have time to warm up.. so i don't shift before 3000rpm.. sometimes, i let it drag at 3krpm in 2nd gear.

The engine, and all the fluids have to warm up before you can pound on the car.

Any automatic car is like that, and will be indefinitely.

Just allow the car to sit for 1 minute max then drive off, should be good to go. If its like 10-30degrees outside then maybe two-four minutes. But don't just sit wasting gas, and DO NOT manually change the gears in an automatic to force it to rev higher, its not helping the engine, and its wasting so much gas.

My car will not shift into 4th upon a cool start!! It's fine once warmed up but I don't have time to wait around, I'm busy. I have had my car 4 years since it was a baby. Only 2 miles when I bought it. Now I Have 59,000 miles. It just started doing this recently???? They told me this is how the car was designed ,but it just started recently!!! I'm not buying this explanation. I wouldn't have bought the car if it did this!!!! Anyone else notice this over time??

It's supposed to help with emissions. It's perfectly normal with the auto trans. I've had mine for 4.5 years.
