Im looking to get a little more bass, and loudness into my car. I dont want anything big, Im looking for one 10" sub. Will the stock speakers be able to handle it, and still sound good? Also, can i get some recommendations on what to get? TIA

i have one 10" sub in one of the custom HB woofer boxes i make.

i also still have the stock speakers. I'm very happy with the sound. Just make sure you get a HU that has a crossover so you can take the bass out of the OEM speakers and have bass only coming out of the woofer.

that will make things sound much better :)

If i could, I would like to keep the stock head unit. Is that possible, or do I really need to get an aftermarket unit?

well if you want to run a sub i would highly suggest an after market.

The stock unit wont allow for enough tweaking to make it sound good. and you'll have to splice into your harness to get a line out for the subwoofer amp. the problem is the head unit wont have enough power to send the signal to the woofer and to the speakers .. well at least some times.

i would suggest getting something aftermarket to get the best sound.

I'll agree generally with that last statement. There is definately an option when it comes to using your stock source however, it's called a line output converter. As with CD players, there are good ones and junky ones.

Until recently, I wanted to use my stock source, and could have very easily. My path had changed (it has cost me beaucoup $$ to do so). I was going to be using an Autosound 2000 LOC...now it is relegated to collecting dust at the shop.

That is the first company I would recommend looking at, the next one would be Soundgate.

Also note...there are quite a few amplifiers that accept stock line level inputs so you can indeed just hook up the stock wiring into the amplifier. Exile and MTX are the names that come to my mind first.

I'm running dual 8" subs in a 1.2cuft ported box w/150rms... with the stock front speakers hooked up to the stock deck.


DON'T KEEP THE STOCK DECK!!! life is sooo much easier if you have an aftermarket deck. It took me 3 days of driving around town before I finally dialed in my amp and deck so that the subs didn't sound wierd. Even then, they don't sound as good/natural as they would if I had an aftermarket deck hooked up. (there is a long story why I don't have another deck installed, and trust me, I WANT ONE installed).

Anyways... Find a budget, once you have your budget then state your goals... we'll tell you if you're overly optimistic or not... which might mean you have to lower your goals or raise your budget. Budget is the key tho.

As a bare minimum I'd say upgrade deck & then run sub +amp. Though, i'd really push for you to afford Deck + new front speakers + 4 channel amp & a sub. Would keep it a relatively small and simple install, and have a quality result performance wise.

There are definately options. I wouldn't say be afraid of keeping the stock deck...I sure am not.

That being said, I've taken the plunge for a little aftermarket deck myself. ....four 24 bit D/A's, 4 way electronic crossover, 32 bit DSP, 31 band EQ on each side with .5 dB increments, unparalled iPod control (the deck uses it's D/A's to override the iPod's conversion), the remote is rotary dial like the iPod so it's REALLY intuitive and easy to use...all in a 1 din chassis. Fun from Japan landing on the 9th.

i have one sub and its more than enough . i would recommend you go with a DVC though

i decided to keep my original head unit because i actually like how it looks and where the ipod hook up is. it was definitely a lot more work to get it up and running (2 subs,, lots of wires/speakers, LOC, and figuring way more than i wanted to out), but all said and done i am more than happy with it. i put infinity speakers all around that give me great speakers and i put a (1) 10" sub in the back. it did take a while to dial it in but i feel like i get great sound out of it and everyone else is more than impressed when i turn the volume up in my little car. i do recommend upgrading the speakers while you're in there doing it... the difference is like night and day.

don't be afraid to keep the stock HU if you're willing to do a little extra work. if you're just a guy looking for some more and clearer sound out of your car it works out just fine.

I kept my stock headunit when i installed a couple subs in my yaris. I'm very happy with it. I like the look and controls of the stock stereo headunit, so it's staying.

i have a 3 door 2001 yaris, I dont have rear speakers in my car so would i need to buy a splitter or anything to get a line out to go to a sub or will the hu have spare ports for me to plug the sub straight into?

I have the stock speakers in my car with a inexpensive ($200) aftermarket head unit and an antique sub. It sounds pretty darn good for what I want. It won't blow anyone's mind, but it usually also went be noticed by the cops as well.

I ran outputs from the rear speakers to a line output and have that running signal to my amp. Spliced into the power behind the stock HU for the remote wire and it's working fine.

Due to the sale i found i have 2 12" Alpine Type Es, currently in truck boxes, and it sounds great. Only problem was not being able to properly connnect and isolate wires which caused me to blow all 4 in the car.

A single 10 would work perfectly. I used to have a single pioneer 12 running 250rms from an MTX amp and that sounded great also. I would recommend staying away from "cheap" brands and just piece it together as you can afford it. If you like the sound of the factory stock speakers then keep them. Adding the amp is not that difficult if you plan ahead and spend a wooping $0.45 on proper connectors. Everything can be easily run down the passenger side since that has the easiest way in from the engine compartment that i have found.

Granted an aftermarket HU would make setting everything up easier and much less custom, but it is not needed to accomplish subs. Go with what you like. The line out i used was a scosche that cost me $6 at Wal-Mart. The spool of wire i got to connect the rears to the line out was $8 for a spool of 30' (having extra wire never hurts).

One thing i have noticed about the Yaris is the compete lack of sound insulation. I could clearly hear the stereo before when i only had stock speakers, now it just sounds deeper. So long as you aren't trying to hide a comp setup noise tickets are not going to be a problem.

...there's another factory source bypass, dang it the name escapes me... it has IQ on it's face. They have 3 and 5 channel versions.

The Yaris and sound deadening are a must if you're truly thinking about a high level of audio performance.
