Dinghy Towing

I am interested in dinghy towing a Yaris behind my motorhome. The Motorhome Dinghy Towing Guide shows the Yaris 5 speed can be towed but Toyota says no. Does anybody have any specifics on this? Maybe how the transmission is designed that would not allow towing. I already know a Mazda Miata 5 speed cannot be towed because I have replaced our wrecked transmission. Of course we were told by the RV dealer it could be!

Any info would be helpful.

I dont see how you couldnt tow a yaris???? I've never done this before, and it always amazes me how you can tow a car like that..... maybe cause its fwd? Idk :[

Note it says that you can still dammage the Yaris by towing it! (even though they say a MT can be towed!)
I assume this dammage would be to the transmission due to lack of lubrication. It should be possible to safely tow the Yaris behind your MH with a dolly where the front wheels are off the ground.

I say the reason the put it in the manual that you should NOT tow the auto yaris front wheel on the road, they don't want you to leave it in park and start towing it..

electric steering motor....if you tow it like that.

I believe you are suppose to throw it in neutral and then to ACC mode with the key. Never done it tho... I think the ACC part is the key.

Not exactly. Automatics have a viscous fluid connection between driveshaft and engine that requires trans fluid to be circulating for lubrication and cooling. So if your engine is off and you are in neutral and rolling, you are going to evenually burn up your trans and have a problem.

When the manual yaris is in neutral there is no direct connection you are good to go.

Dude this is a YARIS and it has a lightweight transmission


you are talking about a different vehicle with different transmission
altogether. and apparently dinghy towing is allowed for those.

I think you should let the manual speak for itself. If done properly, it will not damage the transmission.

Not sure about the F350 specifically, but it's a pretty quick job to disconnect the drive shaft from the rear differential on a rear wheel drive. A couple of bungee cords to hold the shaft up and you're ready to roll. Just don't loose the bolts or you might have a bad day once you get where you are going. :eek:
