what do you guys and girls say when your friends try to make fun of your Yaris? a couple of my friends that i get together with a couple times a week always resort back to calling my little lift back gay and telling me i traded in my balls when i bought the car. i have informed them that i'm a broke college student so it is the right price, i can fit just about anything i have ever tried to get into it, i can drive from my driveway to boston on a tank of gas (which is fantastic being in rochester ny) and that that tank only costs me 25$, and it's actually a zippy little car for the engine size... yet when they have nothing left to try to make fun of me for they go back to the Yaris.
what do the rest of you say because i'm sure i'm not the only one who has ever come across this... and quite frankly, i would love to see the end of this from them.

Is it stock looking? A little tint, a little lowering, some wheels... They'll start giving it a different look. Some of it can be done without spending too much money.

yeah stock. new stereo all around but that's it
Haha. Ok yeah, I am in a similar boat. My retorts usually go back to 'Hey, I am a working college student who bought a brand-spankin new car when I turned 20 years old...'
Something like that usually shuts up at least my friends.
Do you own any other cars? Maybe a project car? Fall back on that too.
It prolly wont end, but it might help lessen it a bit.

i always hear "doesn't that have the prius motor":eyebulge:, and i hear "wow, i didn't think that little car could do that"(this is always fun to hear at the track, after a burnout )
and BTW, they are trying to make fun of the car because they are jealous of the fact that you don't break down, get good MPG, have a pretty peppy car... so it will probably not stop...
then again, you could always turn it back on them by asking "so what do you drive? a honda?"

awwwww!!! :frown: Your friends are tough customers and completely misinformed about the Yaris, obviously.
You're right, there was a thread kind of like this before, and I'll see if I can find it for you. There were some pretty good responses in there, including if your friends continue acting like ignorant @ssholes, perhaps you may need new friends
Everything you say is right about the Yaris. Plus it's a great looking car, nothing wrong with that.
what do the rest of you say because i'm sure i'm not the only one who has ever come across this... and quite frankly, i would love to see the end of this from them.
* Hope you don't expect me to give you a ride when yours is in the shop
* No, I don't need to stop for gas, I filled up 2 months ago
* Yeah, but I can park it almost anywhere
* I can turn on a dime
* I keep it stock so no-one will steal it
*
I'm 6' tall, so I always get (from friends and strangers alike) "Wow! Do you have to fold in half to drive it" or "How do you fit in it?" or "Does your head touch the ceiling?".
Hahaha. Haha. Ha.... *cough cough*. Ugh.

Someone once told me "Why did I bothered to put an alarm on it, who's gonna steal a Yaris"
I don't care, I like my car.
Oh, and if they get really nasty
* well, it maybe an entry level car but at least I know how to drive it

so one just got a 2004 3 series beamer and the other drives his dads old chevy s-10 extreme and just got a 1000cc cbr. i like the college kid retort... seeing as how i don't have a full time job and yet have owned a car with single digits on the odometer (6 :-)).
and no i have no other cars, although i'm going to get a motorcycle this upcoming spring

I just laugh it off as I count the money saved on the way to the bank.
Great gas mileage, great insurance rate, decent priced car payments. The cool goodies which I have installed are sweet as well!
But seriously, what are friends there for if they can't bust your chops once in a while, dish it back to them. It's the friends whom can't take jokes who are the friends you don't want (well, among other more important criteria).

A little tint, a little lowering, some wheels... They'll start giving it a different look. Some of it can be done without spending too much money.
This was a very good advice in my opinion... You can make it look different, with your own taste, and give it a sporty look...
Girls like the Yaris, and that's for sure... So give it a JDM Style look, so that it looks clean, but at the same time sporty and unique... I'm sure girls won't recist it! :burnrubber: :wub: haha
Start with some nice wheels, not to big, some 15' will fit perfectly... then get some coils/springs to lower it... then maybe some HID's... and so on...
You can do this without spending so much, as LtNoogie already said, and I think your Yaris will rock, and nobody's gonna say anything about it, unless they're jelous...
I really don't give a rip what anyone else thinks and you probably shouldn't either. If your car is so critical to your friends maybe they aren't your friends.
I can honestly say there is no other car I'd rather be driving. There is something undeniably cool about an economical little car that inspires a forum such as this. The Yaris is just so many things to so many people with so many wants and needs.

don't sweat it. they probably just jealous that you get better millage than them.
although i don't get hate comments from my friends, they actually like my yaris since i'm the only one among my friends that got a brand new car and that i get better millage than theirs. Also for some of my other friends who don't have cars yet they still like my yaris in a way just cuz i got a car regardless of what it is.
so just be happy that you got a car that you enjoy driving. i enjoy my yaris. i love it! XD especially now in these tough economic times where its getting more expensive for gas.

one of them is one of my best friends and the other has become a really good friend too... and you have no idea how much stuff gets brushed off, it's just that my yaris is their last resort when i have come back at them for everything else and i would like to take the away from them too
haha i'm going to bring them a copy of the consumer reports reliability of my car and show them that seeing as how all but like 3 categories are far above average and the ones that aren't are still above average (something the beamer or the s-10 can claim)... then tell them to kiss my ass because i know my car will last as long as i want it to without billions of dollars in repairs (anything that breaks on the beamer)

just make fun of your car yourself, thats what i do...its shuts them up. by trying to justify the purchase you're just making them want to bust your balls further cus they know it bugs you.
or make fun of what they own
or "you may not like my car, but your mom finds the back seat pretty spacious"
or "shut the fvck up before i drive my small car up your big @ss"

A year ago after I bought my car, a co-worker tells me I'm gay cause I drive a Yaris. Then he tells me his dad has one as well. So on Monday this week he asked me how my weekend was and I told him I had attended a GAY Yaris meet and his dad was there too!!
Yesterday on the way home I had a woman in the lane next to me HONK at me, I rolled down the window and she yelled out to me = That car is so F_CKIN CUTE and I love it!!!
I'll take any compliment from a woman any time.
And NO, I haven't had any GAY men say that to me either.
Hey Dathbauer, diggin your 'signature'. It's very Event Horizon of you

I usually just tell them that I don't need a car thats deemed by the masses as "fancy" to compensate for any "small short" comings...that usually embarrasses them - ESPECIALLY if I say something like that in front of girls (it's even better when they agree and say that "he's not lying either")
Hope that helps

Some racing disk hubcaps, and a sharkfin antenna can also change the look.
And when looking at total economy: finance cost, fuel, and maintenance; the Yaris beats everything at the 5 year and 10 year intervals. (Prius, Fit, Mini, Insight, Smart, all of them)
When they're struggling to pay down their student loans and other expenses, you'll be getting ready to buy your first place.

Sorry I couldn't find that other thread, but it looks like you got some pretty good answers already.
It's true what TheBarber said. If you make fun of the car, too, they'll drop it. If they don't, just remember why you got the car in the first place and ignore what they're saying. When they're done talking you just say "are you done now" and move on to something else. If they can't get a reaction out of you, they'll probably stop rattling your cage.
The most important thing is that you don't let it get to you.

to me its weird when people talk about it being so small. its pretty massive as far as 2 door cars ive delt with are concerned..
i went from driving an 87 pointiac fiero gt to this so no one gets on me about the size because its almost literally double the size of my old car, just that i sold out..which i did :frown: but i needed something reliable and cheap

What do your friends drive? Land barges? Sports cars? If you guys are in college and you're the only one driving an economy car, then you're the only one with your act straight. Make sure they know it when you're buying another beer and they're all out of money. Or, when you're taking your date to a nicer restaurant than they can.
Things like that stick out. You may be frugal with your vehicle, but it lets you enjoy the other things in life that much more.

haha i love this comment but it is way off (no offense) one has an 04 bmw 3 series is 33 and a recovered alcoholic and the other has a chevy s10 extreme that his dad gave him and a 1000 cbr and is a paramedic. to them it really isn't about the money otherwise the savings on gas and the car itself would have shut them up. they just have nothing else to rip on me about so they harp on how gay my yaris is for being small and goofy looking.
i've got some good advice here though so we'll see what happens tomorrow when i get together with them again.

I must consider myself lucky then. My friends like my car more than I do. (I wanted a Scion Tc or a Hyundai Tiburon, but the Yaris was a gift so what's not to like ). The only jokes I've recieve are from my GF cause she smokes me, then again she drives a BMW 335i  Besides that she even likes to drive it cause its "fun to drive" she even learned to drive M/T on it.

I can attest to the effectiveness of these two.
One of my roommates drives a bright purple R33 Skyline, with flames stiched into the seats & glovebox and a black carbon fibre bonnet... You get the picture.
He had it for a month before it caught fire, at the moment it's off the road with a leaking clutch line... And he still takes the piss out of my car, saying it's gay and all that crap. I ask him whose car caught fire, if that doesn't shut him up I ask him why he CHOSE to pay $16000 or so for a PURPLE skyline - when I got mine for nothing. If he's still having a go, I just say that I have half a 45L tank left and I've done 400km since filling it up... First time I said that his jaw hit the floor.
One time he put his foot down and raced around me coming back from rugby practice, being a smartarse (after putting heaps of shit on it as we were leaving). So, I figured I'd get him back and screamed around the back way into the carpark and stole his spot - he was just turning in when I appeared and went straight in instead. I just got out and said that it's not the car, but the driver, no-one stopped giving him shit for a week. What's better is I live on campus so everyone on the team was there to witness it...
The other rode a ZX-10R, which was a very nice bike but all I had to do was ask what he does when it rains and he'd shut up. Now he has a Hyosung GT650R, while it's nice bike (I'm looking at buying one at the end of next year), it's off the road at the moment so neither of them can say anything about reliability. And he still gets wet when it rains.
Oh, and I have a fairly hot '64 Holden EH that I hillclimb and I gravel rally an old Datsun so I just challenge them to a (legal) race and they back down pretty quick... Even though their machines should blow the doors off mine.

My friend used to make fun of my car all the time. Last month he said he wanted to buy one himself. Joking like that stems from insecurity -- like when someone makes fun of being gay all the time -- it's usually them...
My vote is on, "Hey remember when gas was almost $4.00 a gallon last year?" That'll make 'em squirm a little at least.

It comes with the territory. Years ago there was always bashing of others Ford, Dodge, or Chevy trucks at lunch time. Men especially take great pride in their cars/trucks. To feel better about their ride they must degrade every one else’s. Every dog has their day and they will be asking what kind of mileage you get.

there's lots you can say... (I've never had this problem, people sometimes make comments about safety however... but never blatant remarks to hurt or put me down).
1: Tell them they are Tools and it is sad when "friends" have to resort to putting down a person's material possessions by making degrading comments about gender/sexuality/etc just so they can feel good about themselves.
2:Tell them their argument is flawed because a "insert their derogatory adjectives and nouns here" is somebody who is a follower and can't stand up against a crowd without giving up thier values (like you have been doing for sometime).
3: Tell them they are tools for not respecting your wishes to stay away from the yaris... and that you've confronted them on it multiple times already.
One of my favorites...
4: You said you are in college... if this ever happens on campus... walk your ass (and theirs too if they will follow you, without telling them what you are doing) directly to the students rights & responsibilities office (might be known as something else like student affairs office. Then file a formal complaint of harassment. It'll piss your friends the fuck off... but it will also show them that you got some balls... and that you actually have them by their teeny tiny lil balls. Colleges take that stuff seriously... I once figured it out the hard way. (It won't show up on their police records, but will probably put them on academic probation, and they'll most likely have to do some sort of restitution/work as well), maybe even sit and talk with a mediator for an hour or so (gawd that was hell... that guy just kept saying "I don't think you really feel sorry for what you did, or know the full consequences of your actions."
