View Full Version : I finally got "The Look"

I never completely understood why forum members sometimes ask "do people give you a strange look when you drive up in your Yaris" .... until today.

Yarii LB are very popular in my neighborhood, and in San Francisco, and nobody pays attention to them anymore.

If anything I get "oh, cute car" or "what kind of gas mileage to you get" comments.

But tonight I drove up to Marin County (a wealthy county north of San Francisco) to attend an event, and when I got there, the parking attendants definetly gave me ... "The Look"

Most of the other cars in the parking lot were in the $30 /$35K range, and here I show up in my little Yaris... the parking attendants looked at me as if I were driving a lawn mower.

I'll admit that for a minute I felt a little self-conscious. I'm so proud of my little car that I tend to completely forget that people who are used to luxurious cars look down on econoboxes.

Snobs.

Has anybody else ever gotten "The Look" ?

If you had some pimpin' spinner hubcaps, you'd only get looks of awed admiration and envy.

Yes, I've gotten that look around here. I think it's mostly because I'm in the former home of AMC and there are those who give me The Look because it's small and different.
It was hilarious when I parked at school last Tuesday. Someone with an '09 LB (stock) parked right next to me and gave my car a really funny STARE. I could see it on his face...he was thinking, "is that a Yaris, TOO?" That made me laugh.
Oh, then when I drive to my home town where everyone drives large cars and SUVs, they look at my car like it's an alien life form.

I DON'T CARE. I love my car!

I allways get the "What the hell is that? Is it a Hybrid, electric or is it powered by squirles", look. People are always coming up to me at gas stations to talk about it.

The one I always get asked after ppl see all the netz badges is and I tell them they are badged that way in japan:

"Is that imported in?"

the only look i've gotten, so far, is at the drive through. i'll open the driver's side compartment for my wallet and the people in the window always have the, "whoaaa" look on their faces!

I get that one because I have a repop Japanese tag on the front.

+1 - I've gotten that a few times too because I keep change in there. Such simple things excite people eh?

Do you ever experience getting out accelerated on a green light and at the next green you punch the gas to see what the other car will do. When you start off quickly, they floor it and pass you like you're standing still. I love doing that to those who feel threatened by a Yaris.

I get looks for having the Scion badge on my trunk. I got a comment the other day on my way to work. I had a new M3 behind me from the house I was at all the way to the freeway. Its a windy road out in the country. I usually drive it at 50 to 60 mph. He was trying to keep up but kept getting smaller after each turn. At the stoplight he was beside me and asked if what I was driving really a Yaris. I told him it was and that it was stock for now. He seemed surprised to say the least.

Join the club, tomato . This thread takes me back: http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12701

BTW, in the daytime it helps to wear jet black shades and always look a little pissed -->. Haters are all insecure, so they'll usually get spooked and look away the second you face them. All you gotta do is make yourself look a little intimidating and they'll back off (if they know what's good for them)

I get a lot of looks, but it's always for nice reasons .... I can't tell you how many times people have pulled up and asked what kind of car I have (I have the emblems off ... all but the toyota, anyway), a few times I have been asked about where I got my wheels and I have had a TON of people say 'That's the cutest little car!!" and absolutely love it. No one has ever been snotty :) I think the car just makes people happy when they see it LOL

^Nobody's really gonna scoff at a woman driving a small car. Conventionally it goes hand-in-hand.

It's us that are always get the "gay" comments. We have to keep our factory-issued lugwrenches in the aux glove box for that reason

Smart people realize that you're just taking what you need and leaving some gas for them.

I can honestly say I have never had that - hell, even my parents (my dads girlfriend drives an M6 convertable ... and my dad has a nice fleet himself) love my car, I guess I'm lucky not working/living around snotty people!

I never got the look directly, but indirectly...yeah..

I just show them the handling through the curves on the ramp and the road...then no more "looks"....i still can't manage to rub off the cute looks from people's faces...

Hmm, I guess it might just be different for us sedan owners. I've never gotten 'the look' though. The only looks I've honestly gotten are the 'Damn, what kind of car is that?' kind of looks. Probably because, IMO, the sedan doesn't really look as much as an economy-gas-saving car it's supposed to be.

I remember getting "the look" when I was coming home, and these dudes in a truck behind me looked like they were up to no good and smiling deviously at me. Next thing you know, these two girls pull up on my driver's side at a red light saying they want to suck my dick.

There was a size 40D bra on the back of my car, dangling on my rear windshield wiper..

+1 ... I think there is a huge disconnect from the 'vibe' the sedan gives, it doesn't look like a tiny little compact car (and compared to some of the other cars in our class, it is really larger) so I think we may be saved from that attitude our smaller brothers and sisters get

I guess I am impervious to The Look, after driving odd cars most of my life. I drove Morris Minors for 30 years, and ALWAYS got The Look in various contexts: one was contempt, from Cadillac drivers, seeing my car as an insect to be squashed. The Look from "sports car" drivers who can't drive. The Look from young girls who thought my little ragtop was soooooo cuuuuuute!, much to the disgust of her boyfriend. The Look from pump jockeys who couldn't put near enough fuel in my 6 1/2 gallon tank.....

ya...i have people ask me if i have a floor board or if i power the car like fred flinstone....lol. mostly guys from work, but when they ask me how good MPG it gets n they hit the floor. i'm around 39-40 right now, and it's jsut about bone stock. i want aluminum wheels and i'll be doing the grounding kit soon.

any way, i'm hoping that a reduction in unsprung weight will help a lot...rotating mass as well. as well as less resistance in current/voltage so the alternator will be kicking in less. less demand on alt should free up a little power and fuel economy

I could care less what anyone thinks of my car. I enjoy it, it was cheap, I get great mileage from it, and it's fun in the corners. I've had a WRX, Evo, Gti, etc. They are all fun, but end up costing big bucks in one way or another (usually at the pump, and insurance). The Yaris gets me from A to B with a smile on my face, and with extra money in my bank account :)

I work with a bunch of people who drive Lexus, Mercedes, and BMW. So I get the look daily from them.

But I've also gotten this comment from people I work with: "Man, you know really know cars and you drive a Yaris?" ....... pause....... "They must be good cars then."

Damn straight they are

I have the greatest one for you all today. I was dealing with the usual bs traffic today. Anyway it eventually starts to clear up. A lifted Dodge Ram with dual stacks pulls into the slow lane to get past someone doing 10 under in the fast lane. He is cruising there for a while and I get room to get over in the slow lane and I speed up to get past slow traffic. He looks back when I get over and then I speed up and get in the fast lane to pass him. This truck had everything redneck you could think of. Anyway as I passed him my passeneger said he leaned out the window to look down and forward as I passed him. I was told the driver had the look of "what the hell was that little thing that just passed me" when I went by. I laughed because I looked in my rearview in time to see his head still out the window looking at me.
