View Full Version : I hit a pothole :/

And warped my wheel. My aluminum wheel .... so, it's gotta be replaced because it's going to cost $150-$200 to fix it and the wheel/tire combo is only $174.
Lame.
I hate Minnesota and it's craptastic highways, and lack of road work (yet, they keep raising my taxes for 'roads & bridges' ... suuuure).
:frown:
Thankfully, my wheels are still being produced so I will be ordering that on Friday (payday). It's at the shop now sitting in the parking lot until I can get an allen wrech big enough to fit (it has a combo of the locking lugs and the allen wrench) to get my 17"s off and throw my steelies back on.
I just needed to vent to someone who would understand the pain and frustration I am feeling right now.
I am just glad it was only the wheel, not any other part of the car becuase it was a BAD pothole. It could have been worse and I'm glad it's not - but I still just want to bitch about it.

 But definitely good that it was only the wheel! Sorry you had a scummy day.
Did getting it off your chest help at all?
Do you have a pic of the damage? I'm just curious how bad it is.

I don't yet - it is bent on the inside, and since we couldn't get the wheel off without that allen wrench, I wasn't able to take pictures. It can't be that bad of a bend though, becuase it held air for about 1/2 mile and still had air (only gushed out when the wheel hit a certain part while rolling) when I pulled it out of the garage and into the parking lot.
It's not going to hold air though, so that makes me sad.
And yeah - it made me feel better to get it off my chest LOL :)
I will post pictures tomorrow after work.

We have potholes too and taxes in California are pretty bad, probably the highest in the nation. Wait, except for New York ;)
Sorry about your wheel!

I've been there, and it's not pretty. LA roads are just as bad
I had an Eclipse I had a while back on OEM 16's. I slowed down from 80 after seeing a pothole on the freeway. I couldn't go around because there were cars in the lanes next to me, so I just slowed down to 60 and bit my lip. I hit it, blew a tire, and bent the rim on the inside so badly that it broke the surface and left a huge gash.
I took the rim in the next day to a shop to trade it for a replacement for $70. I kept the damaged tire because it was still under warranty. The tire shop I got it from took it back and mounted a new tire on the new rim. All I had to do was pay $30 for the mounting.
Hope you get back on your feet soon

My other car i hit a pothole it put a 6 inch crack in my wheel and bent the lip and deflated my tire instantly. Ended up selling the set of rims and tires on craigslist and put the factory back on. Thats the only problem with alluminum rims and lower profile tires they are more supceptable to damage.

Steel wheels. Cheap. Strong. No allen wrench. Gotta luv 'em!

OUCH!!! I see blown tires on the freeway all the time. I count myself lucky this has never happened to me, but I've heard horror stories about drivers going crazy trying to keep the car on track when the tires blows, especially at high speed .. that s*cks

This is why i don't run low profile tires. Had them before and this happens a lot. Especially cuz of the crappy roads in Illinois.

Aluminum is softer than steel. (less tensile stregnth)To be as strong al wheels must be thicker than equally strong steel wheels. But that doesnt cure the softness. They ARE lighter which is good. You pay the price for that $$$ when you dammage them.

That is true. But then once you have a thicker stronger aluminum wheel it weighs just as much as not more than your factory steel wheel lol. Theres almost no point then. So always a trade off. Thats what makes me scared looking at those konig helums how strong can those really be being as light as they are and as thin as the spokes are.

I just have bad luck with wheels in general. Last year I hit a pothole with the stock wheels and it bent the rim on that one, I found a new steelie on ebay for $25 though so I jumped on that - but then later that winter I slide into a curb because I hit a patch of black ice ... and guess what? Bent the rim! That one was repairable, thankfully.
I think I am just destined to have messed up wheels :) I am going to buy another wheel, but get this one replaced eventually so that I have a spare 17" just in case (which I know it will) it happens again.
I'm glad I'm not the only that potholes strike lol Seems like all across the US we have crap roads. Well, except for Camelll :)

Same thing happened to me. Got a written estimate, wrote the city and explained what had happened indicating exactly where the pothole was. City sent me a check for the full amount of the estimate.

don't be offended when i say this but.
maybe you should watch where you're going a little better ;) or slow down when you're in overly bumpy roads.

Hey there, sorry about the bad luck. At least you get to replace yours. I wanted to buy a replacement aftermarket alloy once upon a time - except that they made a "revision" to the model that looked almost nothing like the retail version I had purchased. I ended up tossing six-hundred dollars worth of rims in the trash.

Oh no!! Just so you know in case it happens in the future - there ARE places that fix rims; it is usually like $150 +/- a wheel, but there are places that fix them. I have two places here locally that do it but I just don't want to go that option because a brand new wheel w/ a tire is only going to cost me $178 shipped to my door so it's just makes me more sense to me to get a brand new wheel WITH a tire for the same price.
That's really sad though :( I'm sorry that happened!!

It was night time and there is 1 single light on that highway on-ramp, at the very top of the on-ramp - I couldn't see it, as the pothole was at the verrry bottom of the ramp
The road isn't bumpy at all, it was the on-ramp to get onto the freeway.
So, since it wasn't that scenario - no offense taken

Sorry about the wheel. My mother was a member of the Eastern star. Dad was a Mason and a Shriner. I don't see much Eastern Star activity in this area. Masonic membership is down around here as well.
i saw the word 'pothole' and instantly thought of the commercial on tv with kelly pickler(from american idol fame) doing the voice of a talking pothole that just blew-out a tire - 'awwww, shoot! did i do thaaaaat?' sorry to make light of your situation, but i laugh everytime i hear it!

In California, if it's not potholes, it's shredded truck tires, mattress', coolers, dead animals, wooden crates, boxes, furniture, car parts (saw a whole transmission in the middle of the freeway), whole wheels with tire, bumpers, fenders, you name it. I don't know how anyone can avoid hitting something. :iono: Sorry about your wheel. :frown:

I almost wrecked today swerving around a steel ladder on the freeway. I see some people just don't know when to stop loading their car roofs/pick-ups

My brother moved to TX recently. Everywhere you go there are Mexicans driving pickup trucks with a huge pile of junk in the back stacked up precariously. It must be the same in CA. As a motorcycle rider I take note!

Pretty much the same here. All I can say is that driving on LA roads make for interesting adventures sometimes. Like yaris-me said, you're bound to find the most random pieces debris lying right in front of you to hit.
Almost tempting to make a game out of it. 50 points if you peg the mattress without crashing

Eastern Stars aren't very 'popular' around here, at least not within my age group.

LOL that's great!! I completely forgot about that commercial, I am going to chuckle everytime I look at my bent wheel sitting in the living room now haha (the lock on my garage broke, so the wheels aren't going in the garage till they be secured in there ... so for now, they have warmth in the corner of the living room lol)

Holy shit - I can honestly say I have never seen anything that crazy in the road before. lol That is like something from a video game!!
I did find a replacement, I am ordering another wheel from WheelFire.com where I bought the set, they still have them in stock so I'm good :) I have my steelies on now, which I need to have on for winter anyway - but here is a few pictures of the damage :frown::

That must have been one hell of a pothole, even for a 205/40 tire. Ouch. At least they're not Volks, right?
That's why I switched from 17" to 15/16" (staggered - I don't drive a Yaris). It bugged me how much of a beating 17's take on our cars, since we have to run such low profile tires on them.

So with all this talk of 15's vs. 17's, lower profile vs. taller sidewalls, etc... and of course, strength vs. looks... could the 15" OEM alloys be the perfect compromise?
regal
11-05-2009, 09:34 PM
Yes the 15" OEM Alloys are the perfect compromise for a daily driver on rough road, I used the Scion's. They are so much tougher than Konigs and the like.
