View Full Version : Cruise control install 2009 Yaris 3 door

Successfully installed factory cruise control today in a 2009 Yaris 3 door base hatch. Just want to sum up and condense what I learned from the three or four other cruise control threads and my observations.
A few points
If your 2009 Yaris has the Power Package or is the S all the correct wiring is in place. If you have a base without the power package there may be more wiring needed that is not covered here.
I know this package is more expensive then the aftermarket switches mentioned elsewhere or the Radio Shack specials which can be put together for 10 bucks but I like the stock look and think a dealer will never even notice you did this yourself if there is a warranty issue down the line.
If you have the Power Package you only need three parts for an auto or four parts for a standard shift. Those parts are:
84632-08021 Cruise control switch $100
84633-02020 Cruise switch wire $36
90159-50199 Screws (2) $2
88280-14030 Clutch switch (stick shift only) $20
You only have to remove the airbag and drill one 1 inch hole for the auto, that and install the clutch switch for the stick. Piece of cake all around and its just 20 minutes start to finish if you have all the parts and tools assembled in advance.
Tools needed:
#2 Philips screwdriver
A small blade flat screwdriver
1-inch hole saw and drill
#27 torx driver
10 mm wrench
14 mm wrench for stick
That’s all folks.
The procedure:
Use the 10 mm wrench to remove the negative terminal from the battery to disable the airbag. Wait at least 90 seconds before removing the airbag, better yet do the clutch switch first or go get a soda.
Do the clutch switch if it’s a stick. There is an under dash cover that needs to be removed, remove the two philips screws on the bottom edge of the dash and just pop the cover down. Now get under the dash and look up at the driver’s side of the clutch lever and you'll see a bolt that stops the pedal when you let the clutch up. Get a feel for how much free play the bolt is adjusted to. Use the 14 mm wrench to break the lock nut and replace that bolt with the clutch switch making sure you duplicate the free play and snug down the switches lock bolt. Now look about 7 inches above the switch you just installed and you'll see the wiring harness for it taped up to another harness. Cut it down and plug it in and put the under dash cover back.
Here are pics of the underdash cover and the clutch switch in place.
http://www.petejordan.com/images/yariscc/underdashcover.jpg
http://www.petejordan.com/images/yariscc/clutchswitch.jpg
Now remove the airbag. Use the #27 torx driver on the two nuts recessed on both sides of the steering wheel loosen them until the airbag assembly is loose, you don't have to completely remove them. SUPPORT the airbag you don't want to stress the wires going into the clock spring assembly. There are three wires to remove, the horn wire and the two airbag wires. The horn wire is a spade connector - just pull it off the airbag. The airbag wires require you to first use a small flat blade screwdriver to work up the yellow clip on top of the connector when that is done then use the screwdriver under the connector to work the connector up out of the airbag. Put the airbag someplace safe out of the sun.
Here is the pic of the steering wheel with air bag removed
http://www.petejordan.com/images/yariscc/airbagoff.jpg
Now remove the horn wire from the clock spring by just pressing lightly on the tab on top and pull the wire out. Use some masking tape and secure the airbag wires aside so you don't damage them or the clock spring.
Drill the 1" hole for the switch. I just matched the switch up to the screw holes, estimated the spot then carefully drilled from the outside in. Put the switch through the hole and see if you lined up right, remember the switch is supposed to move up down and forward. Enlarge the hole as necessary to make up for alignment errors using a sharp knife then screw the switch in place.
Pics of the cruise control switch mounted.
http://www.petejordan.com/images/yariscc/switchmounted.jpg
http://www.petejordan.com/images/yariscc/mountedfromside.jpg
Put your new cruise control switch wire in the connector on the clock spring you took the horn wire out of and plug it into the cruise switch. Reinstall the airbag reversing the method you used to take the connectors off. There is a lot of advice out there to keep yourself grounded while you handle the airbag, you can do this by just touching the bare metal in the steering wheel assembly its grounded. Tighten the two #27 torx bolts on either side of the wheel, reconnect the battery and you're done!
SUCCESS!

I took the easy way out and wired up my own buttons on an empty panel. It took longer to solder up the buttons than it did to wire everything.

That's a pity.
That's the reason why it's so expensive to upgrade your Yaris with cruise control here, it will cost 850 bucks.

If you plan to purchase the OEM rear panel of wheel so you don't have to cut the hole to fit the cruise stalk, you will need to remove steering wheel. It is better IMO since you have a factory look, AND, it's merrily a bolt away anyway. :)

I did mine today. It was $112 from the dealer, down from when I originally mentioned Yaris and it was $109 for the switch alone then the screws and wire were extra totaling $156. I changed it from Yaris to Corolla and the price dropped and the kit had everything in it.
Drilled a hole in the lower piece then went to Lowes and bought a hole grommet to cover the edge where I didn't drill it perfect. Looks and functions great. Thought the wife would scream about the money spent but instead she asked when I was going to add the power locks/windows.

If you buy the "Cruise Control Wire" from Toyota, it is a Y cable with 3 ends that connect to: The cruise stalk, the connector where the horn was plugged in, and the spade connector on the horn switch.

Here's mine. I bought a Scion TC steering wheel with the cruise stalk and the Scion CC wire for $45 off ebay. The steering wheel is of no use, but $45 for the stalk and cable was a good deal. (And, I can probably get $10 for the steering wheel, if I list it on ebay.)
The spiral cable end of the CC wire for the Scion was different because the Scion wheel has steering wheel radio controls. I was able to pop the two CC pins from the Scion spiral cable connector and stick them into 4 pin connector on my Yaris.

was afraid to install myself because of the airbag, but it did not have to be removed or disconnected.
it was free (they like me since i bought 3 toyotas lately) and the parts were ordered online for $130.

TRDsparks.com typically can save you a few dollars versus your local dealer. Buying parts from a junkyard or shopping eBay will net you an even better price for the stalk.

Did this mod today on my '10 3 door hatch with base trim.
-All harness wires were already in place. No running wires was necessary.
-Screws to remove the airbag were Torx T30. I used a 1/4" drive bit on a ratchet handle with an extension which fit in the access hole very nicely.
-Blade connector for the horn had a little tab locking it in place that caused me some consternation until I realized it was there.
-Ether the switch I got had a scratch on it when I got it or I scratched it when I passed it behind the metal steering wheel frame to set it in place. I'd suggest being careful with that step.
-I didn't disconnect the air bag, just held it out of the way. Only tricky part was drilling the hole.
Exceptional tutorial PeteZNY. Thank you!

I installed it on my 2010 3 LB MT today. I decided to go with the factory steering wheel cover rather than drilling my own hole on a car that has less than 3k miles on it. The steering wheel came off easily with just a slight tap on the wheel with the heel of my hand after removing the nut. Including the clutch switch, it took me under an hour working very carefully and meticulously. Afterall, it's brand friggin' new. Anyway, it works like a champ and I never would've tried it without the help of this site and these pics. Anyone with a modest amount of mechanical aptitude can do this with patience and care.
THANKS! This site and you guys ROCK!
Next up, find someone in South Jersey to do paintless dent removal on the two friggin' door dings on my drivers door that Good thing I don't have the temper I once had...
Anyone know who is reputable in South Jersey that does PDR?
Thanks.

This question is for everyone who installed the cruise control. How did you guys remove those screws that is removed by using the #27 torx? Those screws are so tight it is impossible to loosen them.
On DIY it's not even mentioned how to take the steering wheel apart other than use #27 torx to remove the airbag. I guess no one else had this problem. Parts of my palms are all red b/c of forcing it too much. Am I doing something wrong?

On my 09 the airbag screws came off easily with a 1/4" drive socket torx bit. I initially tried the torx bit with a screwdriver, but couldn't break them loose. The extra leverage of the 1/4" ratchet was more than enough.

If you bought a T27 1/4" screwdriver bit, you can make a DIY version of the above, by sticking the bit in a 1/4" socket and wrapping it with tape so it doesn't just fall out.

i used a socket torx bit... just what i had.. worked great.. as for remvoing the steering wheel... once you have the airbag out of the way.. and MARKED the alignment of the wheel and post... i just wiggled gently but firmly (dont damage the clockspring) and the wheel came loose with only a minute of wiggling.

I purchased my stalk off ebay along with a Scion Tc steering wheel.
This is what the OEM hole looks like:
34532
34531
There was a rubber bushing that mounted over the fins, which fit tightly around the stalk and flexed as the stalk moved:
34529
I mounted the bushing to my rear cover and then used the center of it as my drill guide (I drilled a 1" round hole, rather than trying to duplicate the square one:
34530
Before I installed the bushing I scanned it. Here's a PDF of it. Print it without scaling and it will print a perfect one. You can either cut one out of rubber, or just use the paper one as your template:

OK - I assume that since you posted in this thread, that you went for the OEM cruise stalk method?
If that's the case, since you have an 07, it required the wiring from the ECM to the steering column, pins added to the steering column end of the clockspring, mounting of the stalk under the airbag, and connection of the stalk to the steering wheel end of the clockspring.
If it's a manual transmission, it would also have required installation of the clutch cruise control switch and wiring from it to the under-hood fuse panel.
Did your mechanic do all of the above?

Therein lies the rub... This thread is specific to 2009+, as the wiring from the ECM to the steering column (on liftbacks) and the cruise control indicator on the cluster became standard in 2009.

If your car's an AT, then that is all that you need. The part numbers for the pin for the ECM and pins for the clockspring connector are in that thread above. The easiest place to get them is from your local dealer.

Parts ordered (from Sparks Toyota $107.01 inc. shipping) and installed in (09' sedan with power package) literally minutes! Parts shipped the same day and arrived when the said they would. Took about a 1/2 hour working slowly and methodically. Works perfectly! and... one of the easiest things I've ever done on a vehicle.
I choose not to remove the airbag. Just temporarily strapped it to the wheel out of the way. Found a nice looking grommet in my garage and the install looks factory.
BTW... I thought I'd shop around a bit before ordering the parts online. None of our junkyards had a suitable wreck. Called the local dealer parts dept and told them what I wanted. They said they could get the parts but would have to come in and special order and they wanted more money than sparks Toyota.
The Dealer Parts guy fwd me to the service department and I told him what I was doing and asked them what they would charge to do the work. The guy was kind of rude and told me it could not be done! I said people are doing it all across the country. He said there is no kit available that I would need "actuators" in addition to switches blah blah blah. Bottom-line... don't let those guys tell you it can't be done, they don't know what they're talking about.
I found the cruise control store on-line. But they sell the parts for about twice what sparks asks. (For people who do Ebay the switch is only $30 but I can't tell if the wires are included) The Cruise control store also had a list of installers they recommend so I called the local one. He wanted $400 to install including parts. I said no thanks. If you're considering doing this yourself, I say go for it... you'll be happy you did.

OK...here's my problem: 07 sedan, automatic, power windows, door locks & mirrors. Desperately need cruise! Ordered cruise stalk & cruise wiring harness plus ECM repair terminal (part # 82998-24250) and 2 spiral connector repair terminal (82998-12870) as I am lead to believe I need to run a wire from ECM to wheel as discussed in other discussions. I'm not overly comfortable doing this stuff so printed off forums, pictures, diagrams, etc. and dropped them off at my mechanic, who know what he is doing. He intalls cruise stalk and drills hole in wheel cover. I did order cover with cruise hole already in it but was shipped the one without the hole. Another whole long story I'll save for another time. Go to pick up the car and he says it doesn't work. He said there already was a wire at connector A21, pin 40. Is this possible? He also said he couldn't locate connector D3 under the steering wheel. I am lost!
I appreciate someone taking the time to take my hand and lead me through this. I have read and reread all the forums discussing installing cruise and STILL don't get it.

If the wire in pin 40 is blue, then I believe it (some 07-08 Yaris have the wire from there to connector AD4 (which is way up high under the dash, but not the wire from AD4 to D3). If it's not blue, then he is looking at the connector incorrectly.
As for D3, it is under the center of the steering column (he has to remove the lower steering column cover to see it). It is the White connector below, with the one black wire (which is what yours will look like).

Many thanks. Let's say he is looking at the connector correctly and the wire is blue...now what? How much of a PITA is it to get the wire from AD4 to D3?
Also, let's say there's a blue wire in pin 40...could it be removed and a new wire run directly to D3, bypassing AD4?

Getting to AD4 requires removing the top of the dash, so if there is a wire in pin 40, I would tap it and run to the steering column.

Scott..
Do we assume the conection between D3 and V1 are there?, have you ever checked your Yarris buggy/plow?
I just reced the OEM CC stalk I ordered and pissed that Toyota went to all of the troubole to have the ECU with the CC software installed, and harness fabed with all the interwire connects except D3 to AD4! Man I hate those guys at Toyota!..
P.S...Do we know the terminal specs or the termial size part# if I wanted to add the two connects to D3.. The terminals are very small and I have never seen this type at any local electronic store..
P.P.S.. Scott, have you ever take apart your gauge cluster too see if the electrical traces are there for the CC light indicator in hoping that all is needed is possible a inline resistor and/or SM led

D3 to V1 wires are definitely there, as there is only one clockspring used on USDM Yaris.
My FAQ thread has the pin part numbers:

I have taken apart the non-cruise clusters and they lack anything related to cruise indication.

Wait, so is it just plug and play or do you need to run wires to the ECU?
I don't quite understand what's going on here. ._.

It depends on the year and if it is AT or MT, as to whether it is plug and play at the steering wheel, or if extra work is required:

That I understand, for the record I have a '10 LB Power Package, and I see the cruise light indicator on the dash when I shine a flashlight in the general area.
What I don't get is how do you wire the stalk itself? I don't see any connectors to plug the stalk into.

If you look at the 4th thread in the DIY, he shows the stalk installation. The connector that the stalk connects to is the same one that the horn is connected to. With no cruise, there is just one wire on that connector and with cruise there are three. The OEM cruse control switch wire replaces the existing one.

I'm guessing the cruise switch directs a certain level of feedback down the wire?
Well, either way, after my next payment, I'll save the paycheck after that to gather these parts. Can't wait to install it myself~!

The ECM has an analog input that looks at the voltage coming from the stalk pin, with respect to ground. The resistors between the switches have different values, so when each is pressed the ECM sees a different voltage on the CC pin.

OK..here is where I am at. On the clock spring at 3 wires/pins. 1 for horn, 1 red & 1 black. The cruise switch has a red & black. The black on the cruise is wired to pin 40 on ECM. The red on cruise is wired to red on clock spring. It still does not work. Where exactly do the 2 wires (red & black) of the cruise go? 1 goes to pin 40? One goes to ???? There are only 2 pins on connector D3, not 3???

I was about to say that you need to get your eyes examined in regards to the 2 vs 3 pins on D3, but then I took a look and noticed that on my 08 there are indeed only 2 pins on the clockspring side of that connector.
The other pin for the cruise control is ground. You can simply tie the other wire to the frame of the steering wheel, since it is a chassis ground.

I hate to say it, but perhaps have someone else do the work. Many forum members, who are not mechanics, have done this mod without an issue.
Based on the lights that came on, I would say at this point that your mechanic has the ECM pin in the wrong position.

I have a 2010 5dr Liftback w/auto trans.
Per the Forum DIY, I used the following parts, ordered from ToyotaPartsZone.com:
84632-08021 Switch, Speed Control: Quantity 1 @ $78.89
84633-02020 Wire, Cruise Switch: Quantity 1 @ $27.93
45184-52130-B0 Cover, Steering Wheel: Quantity 1 @ $22.60
90159-50199 Screw, W/Washer: Quantity 2 @ $0.73
Installation took 20 minutes (taking my time). Works flawlessly.
After installing, I found this switch (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/TOYOTA-CAMRY-YARIS-COROLLA-07-08-09-10-CRUISE-CONTROL-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem27b4b8cf49QQitemZ17053 5735113QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccesso ries) on ebay for $19.99 plus $10 shipping. Can't tell if the wire is included or not.

Hi everyone,
I want to hear the confirmation again. I read the thread and somewhere it is said that a European Yaris 09 cannot install cruise control using the method described above, is it true, and in that case, are there any other ways to install it myself without getting to dealer (who would ask for more than 500 Euro). Thanks in advance.

European ECMs definitely don't have the OEM cruise control.

Thanks, CTScott for your quick reply. I followed the link, and it is quite amazing to see such a product exists (donot know the price though). As there are differences between European models and American ones, regarding the mods to the car (to increase performance and stability), which one do you think is the most do-able ones? (rear-sway bar, SSK, strut bar...?). Thanks in advance.

I would just like to add, Disconnect your battery before you mess with your airbag.
I'll add... It's not the airbag you have to worry about (there are FAR too many fail-safes.)
It's eletrocuting yourself with the electric horn spade connector.
As me how I know...

YIKES!!!!! The airbags don't actually have fail-safes. You just give them 12V and they go BOOOOOOOOM!!!!! The SRS system has fail-safes to prevent accidental deployment, but the airbags are just simple explosive charges. To dispose of an un-popped airbag, you simply apply 12V to make it pop (with the airbag contained in a stack of tires for safety).

Well yes, but those connectors are hidden by rubber. Unless you're doing something worthy of a Darwin award, they will not magically receive receive twelve volts of power. (Unless your engine is running, coasting downhill, and happen to be stopped by a wall.)
Indirect heat doesn't set them off, either. Mechanic cut a stripped torch off the airbag in my Sunfire. We all gleefully awaited a BANG in the waiting room. Alas, only a bill for a half hour's worth of labour. :frown:

how to remove the arrow of a speedometer to get to the printed circuit board?
CTScott
02-24-2013, 09:27 AM
The Liftback has an area without the circuit board, on the left side near the clock, which make for easy mounting of the LED for my indicator module. For the sedan, the circuit board covers the entire area of the cluster. So, with the sedan, I would suggest mounting the indicator LED outside of the cluster (On the dash to the right of the ignition switch would be a good place for it).
