Hi all of yaris world. just curious to know but has any one tried adjusting the exhaust timing gear on the 1nz-fe? i do realize thats an interference engine and you can't adjust vvt-i manually.

um. i havent heard of anyone adjusting the entire cam, but i do know that on hondas and mitus's there's a cam timing gear swap. you can do more than the 16* for the oem tooth design. that's a little much in my book, but i'd like to see more aftermarket support for the yaris.

i'd like to see some intake manifolds, heads, cams, and some cheaper stuff. there's plenty as far as minor boltons like exhaust and pulleys though.

The reason i asked is: i looked at one variable valve timing engine that pulled 8 degrees on the exhaust side an it gained 8-10 extra horsepower. thats why i was wondering.

Well what are you going to achieve by adjusting the exhaust cam timing? On the yaris' engine (1NZ-FE) we can only alter the valve overlap between intake and exhaust cams, which has been provided by the VVT-i mechanism (advancing/retarding the intake cam).

Variable valve timing is one thing, changing the exhaust cam timing is another. Too much overlap and you lose vacuum. :frown:

Well I am quite positive that what VVT-i does is to advance/retard intake valve overlap only (not cam profile nor valve lift), hence does the same thing as a cam gear. VVT-i adjusts this overlap continuously throughout the rev however.. I guess what would make a difference would be an exhaust cam with more aggressive profile.

Study how cams work and you'll understand why variable valve timing helps economy and performance. You're just doing a guessing game right now.

Ive studied how cams work for quite a while now. was just curious if anyone had pulled timing on the exhaust side. was'nt playing a guessing just so you know.

you cant put adjustable cam gears on this car due to the vvti. the vvti adjusts cam timing in real time i believe. so in essence, you have adjustable cam timing now, its just that a computer does it for you now.

the camcon system will allow you to adjust the cam timing though

now were getting somewhere. i realize that the camcon, e-manage and some aem systems w/ vvt control will control vvt-i in most cases. and i also realize that that most of theses engines you cant vvt because its controlled by a solenoid. i was just curious to know if anyone had adjusted the exhaust cam or if it could be adjusted. thanks for all the coments guys you've been a big help

1nzfe is single VVTI, you could technically adjust the exhaust cam gear IF you had an adjustable cam gear custom made (or retrofit from something else perhaps)

dual vvti like the new 2ZRFE (or is that 2RZFE? one is a tacoma, one is an xD/corolla lol) and you're out of luck.
