View Full Version : Rattle - Noise when Yaris put in Reverse

I have an 2009 Sedan. 8000 miles, Automatic.
When I move the shift from park to reverse it sounds normal. But when I move from drive, into neutral, then into reverse. There is a loud noise/vibration. It sounds like the engine is loose - or the motormounts and something is grinding/thumping. Hard to describe but you know when something is not right.
My wife took it to the dealer and the head guy told her it was normal. She asked to try another Yaris on the lot which they did and it did NOT make the same noise. The the guy said well its still normal. Needless to say is that I will take the car in myself to battle with the dealer.
Has anybody else had a problem with the reverse gear in the Yaris.

So it still happens in the 2009s huh. Would have thought they would have taken care of the issue by now. Your Toyota tech is not lying. This is a common issue with automatics that has been talked about a lot. I have the same issue with my '06 A/T.
Here are a couple of old threads.

I have a manual and my car makes the same noise. I tried isolating the location of the sound and concluded that it was coming from my hood prop rattling in the plastic cradle which is situation on the battery. That plastic cradle slides back and forth, so when the engine is vibrating, the cradle rocks as well. Could this be it for you, too, or do you think it's definitely something else?

My wife's sedan has the same problem only when the engine is cold. After its warmed up the rattle is gone.....for reverse gear that is

There is a TSIB for this, zip tie the shift cable to the trans cable bracket#2. The shift cable rattle against it when cold, in reverse.

Update
I printed the thread which showed that the cable needs to be attached to the bracket with a zip tie and brought it to my dealer. They stated they fixed it. I will pick it up today and find out.

I zip tied the cable to the flimsy bracket and the rattle is history!

Will Toyota try to void my warranty if I just zip tie this myself?

I dont think a single zip tie will void your factory warrenty. It would be pretty hard to prove how that zip tie cause your engine to fail or your transmission to give out.

After scheduling a service appointment and presenting the TSB I was told I would need to leave the car overnight so they could duplicate the problem. I asked about any warranty problems if I did it myself, the technician said not to worry about it. Zip tie worked perfectly.

Nope! The dealer will be happy you did work they're supposed to cover for free!
On that note, all TSB's are usually free, provided you're still in the 3 year bumper-to-bumper warranty.

Can anyone post a pic showing the zip tie installed? I'd like to do this on my car too.

Yes, my '09 Yaris S Sedan, 29,500 miles, began emitting this noise when shifting in reverse at around 8,000 miles. The rattle or what sounds like a metallic noise when shifted in reverse for a few seconds is still happening and seems to be growing louder.
I have taken it to 3 different dealerships across the country. When I told the dealerships about the sound; all 3 Toyota service dealership folks have either said that the dx computer is not indicating a problem or they simply show no interest investigating the source of the problem.

Read the rest of the thread, this problem is easily solved with a single zip tie.

Performed the zip tie fix for the rattling trans control cable in about 5 minutes ... worked like a charm and cost practically nothing (what's a zip tie cost these days? 5 - 10 cents?)
