View Full Version : DIY - Standing rear wiper for hatchback

Story:
The rear wiper is a shelf for dirt. During the winter months, I suspect it'll clear snow more effectively by pushing it down instead of bunching it to the side. This took about 30 minutes and is easily reversible.

Tools:
1. 10mm socket - used on wiper arm and motor
2. #2 Phillips screwdriver - used on motor
3. Slotted screwdriver with tape - used to pry trim panel

Procedure:
1. Remove rear wiper arm (refer to service manual pg WW-29).
2. Pop off the back door trim (refer to service manual pg ED-142).
3. Disconnect the white power plug from the wiper motor.
4. Remove the three bolts holding the motor.
5. Remove the four screws off the cover plate.
6. Lift the long arm off the white gear.
7. Rotate the short arm to the left and reconnect the long arm.
8. Reassemble and enjoy.

If you dont want to do it I gotta do mine soon, and I think it would be a good addition to the DIY section.

Im going to remove the wiper myself and have the hole filled, and there are plugs at the hardware store that can be painted that fit right in the existing hole. Or in my case I am gonna have it filled when I have some body work done.

meh... I'd fill mine in but most of the time I need it to work.... I'd rather have a DIY for intermittent wipers.... which I think we already have one...haha

Yeah, i haven't seen anyone with a set that really works properly, to me it feels like an afterthought by toyota, it doesn't even stay on the glass and is noisy... worst feature of the car in my opinion. Plus I am all for weight loss on this car, and thats another 5 or so pounds not needed.

I find my rear wiper useful now the one on my scion xb was crap!

Well thanks for the input guys but for me I think out is the best for me. I like the look and the weight loss, I count it all now. I am gonna change batteries and a few other things too, the car drives unlike any yaris I have driven. It is loose still but I haven't stiffened the suspension yet.

It doesn't gather dust and dirt when it's sitting that way versus the stock horizontal position. My wiper blade collects a ton of nastiness, I cringe sometimes if I have to use it since it'll spread it over the back window.

Added tools and story section. I had reservations about it interfering with my rear view but it's barely noticeable after a few days. Since I live in a dusty area, there's less build-up.

Just came across the DIY and was wondering if there were any downsides to this mod?

I like it because 1) as stated, crude doesn't build up on the static blade as it does in the stock position and 2) the blade is more efficient pushing water and dirt down off the rear window versus across it!

I plan to give it a try when I get a chance, but thanks for the great instructions!

Cheers! M2

It's been more than a year now and my only observations are:

1. The blade conformed to the glass .. doesn't affect function
2. It's hardly noticeable, especially if the rear headrest is up

So no issues with the blade staying against the glass while driving, i.e. the wind causing it to "chatter" at high speeds or anything....

Honestly, I am surprised that more people don't do this mod. Given the limited rainfall we get here in southcentral Texas, and the vast amounts of dust we have to put up with; this seems like a more practical set-up than stock.

Cheers! M2

I got the idea from looking at Vitz in Japan.
It won't chatter at all, MadMax.

Also, gives confusion to people as to why the arm is stuck at that position (whereas we know, its still functional).

i wish i waited and followed this DIY. I'll forward this to another member who i tried to help, but couldnt get the wiper to set in at that angle...

Snow/ice won't pile up on the wiper like that. I like the idea. Now, could you show us how to use a regular/replaceable auto parts store blade instead of that proprietary piece of junk? <.<

Remember to wear workgloves, the sheet metal there is crazy sharp, kioshi knows firsthand doing this mod. I wore leather gloves while working on it.

Only downside I think is to trying to clean the window with the washer fluid, gotta time spray. Doesn't bother me too much

For everyone that has done this... Are there any tricks to removing the back door trim? All the repair manual says is

4. REMOVE BACK DOOR TRIM BOARD ASSEMBLY
(a) Using a screwdriver with its tip wrapped in
protective tape, slide the handle plate of the back
door trim board to disengage it.
(b) Disengage the 3 claws and 9 clips and remove the
back door trim board.

With this illustration:

I'm guessing that you just remove the little handle plate, then slowly pull the whole thing off (similar to other interior trim pieces, e.g. radio trim, A/C trim, etc.).

That sound about right?

Figure it might be a little easier to ask ahead of time instead of standing there looking at the panel and going, "hmmm?..." while scratching my head.

No tricks. I just went around the edges and pulled straight where I felt a clip. It did take more pull than I originally thought since I didn't want to break any clips

Thanks, sex! (Great user name, by the way!) I figured it was as easy as it sounded: just pull it off. Just didn't want to rush it and break a bunch of clips.

are you still able to use the wiper arm cap? To me it looks crappy without it.....

^^^^ Yes I would like to know also. As it appears the arm looks a bit tweaked.

My car budget is limited right now so I'm going after all the free/inexpensive mods. I did this one tonight. I probably should have followed the advice about wearing gloves.

My wiper arm cap still fits. The wiper arm is still in its normal zone of travel, it just stops in a different spot. I'll post up some pics tomorrow.

Yep I understand about budget constraints. Have you done the one that modifies that cap that we are talking about allowing you to flip the arm all the way from the glass?

The wiper arm cap mod was the first mod I did shortly after getting the car.

In the new stopped position the arm is slightly off angle from the cap but it isn't very noticeable unless you are looking for it.

Pics of the wiper with the cap on.

I like this mod. straw from pine trees always get stuck in my wiper blades. I may plan to do this eventually

Got this done this afternoon and still had time to mow the lawn. What a productive Saturday afternoon! Like Stove mentioned, the end cap angle is off a little bit when the wiper is stopped, but it's not noticeable at all.

About the filth: yesterday it rained while I was driving back home from school, so it was really easy to line up the wiper blade with the new vertical stop position. And it illustrates the purpose of the mod... just imagine all that dirt and crud being wiped across your window instead of being pushed down and away from it! So, yeah, my car's dirty, but that dirt served its purpose.

I did mine today, and yes having a line of dirt to align your new standing position to is very, very useful :)

cool idea if you want to see the wiper arm every time you check your rear view mirror . but i agree about the dirt , snow wiper arm acts like a shelf for all the crap that get stirred up while driving i want to pull the whole unit off but cant find a nice looking hole cover

There are many cars that have the wiper positioned as it is in this mod, so I doubt there's much obstruction...

Having the wiper arm up is probably less of an obstruction than a window that you can't clear off at all...

i cant say i have seen any stock rides with the wiper straight up. hell i don't even use mine i don't like the port hole look after the dirt is only cleared ware the wiper touches the glass i don't live ware severe winter weather is normal

It seems like the defroster grid would keep the blade free from ice build up when its in the up position.

Dear God, it's been three years since I last posted in this thread and I've still yet to do this mod!

The wife and I went to early vote last week and I saw a Yaris hatchback in the parking lot that had this mod done, which got me to thinking about it again. Given how much dust there is in south-central Texas, this seems like it would be something good to do. We recently had some heavy rain and as usual, my rear wiper was near useless because it spends 99% of its time being blasted by intense heat and crap building up on it.

So I'm gonna try and get this done this week. I just had Sprocket in my garage working on my headlights and doing a few other minor maintenance items, I wish I had thought about this beforehand as it would have been a great opportunity to do this. I can probably do it outside but given that all my tools are in the garage, it's much easier; I just have to move the Jeep out and bring the Yaris in.

Cheers! M2

Just found this the other day and did it Saturday. Loving the look and it seems to work great, just waiting for some rain to see how it really works.

Hi guys,

I'd love to try this one! Can anyone link to the service manuals mentioned, or provide with quick instructions on how to perform those steps that refer to the manuals?

Thanks!!

I think the blade will likely last longer in the up position too.

Gentlemen,

I'd like to warn you about a little problem that I encountered while doing this mod...

If you find a rear wipe electric motor that has torx screws on the cover plate... just give up and go home.

As you can see in the screenshot attached, there are no other slots/holes where you can mount the long arm. I stared at the thing for about 15 minutes to try and figure out a way of still doing the mod somehow... the only way I could think of was to "rotate" the shiny metal circle on the white wheel, but even the holes where that metal circle are fixed are assymetric... it's only meant to be assemble one way...

Very disappointed, I reassembled everything as it was...

If only I visited the second page earlier... Seems that European Yaris uses this Bosch motor and can't be modded. Maybe if we ordered an american wipe motor it'd work?
