Denmark is a big shame.

It's because of the cruelty that the human beings (civilised human) kill hundreds of the famous and intelligent Calderon dolphins.

This happens every year in Feroe island in Denmark . In this slaughter the main participants are young teens. WHY?
To show that they are adults and mature.... BULLLLsh

Fortunately, there are also the other kind of people, people who volunteer their time to clean up birds after an oil spil, people who bring their dogs to hospitals to let little sick kids and old people enjoy a little happy time with puppy for 5 minutes, people who quietly rescue animals from the pound, even if they're not puppies, even if they don't look that good. That kind of stuff. And there are plenty of those people around too.

Stick with the latter, I think.

I wouldn't blame the entire country of Denmark for the stupidity of a few, though :smile:

My parents took me to Sea World when I was little and I got to pet and feed a couple dolphins, so I know first-hand how friendly and harmless they are.

The way this was described in the OP is definitely enough to piss me off, so I think not being able to see pics is actually a good thing (I really don't feel like chucking my laptop against a wall).

It's a cultural thing, and the animals aren't wasted. Based on the picture of the village, I'll gander that hunt is an annual event only, and the town essentially survives on it.

I'm well-aware of how pigs, cows, and other animals are killed for food, however, those dolphins are endangered animals, and killing them annually for a "right of passage" is stupid. I'm sorry if I'm being culturally insensitive, but it just is. Why would you want to kill something that in danger of becoming extinct.

And killing them out in the ocean and the streets is very unsanitary if they are indeed used for food.

Clearly you don't have the faintest of clue on wildlife hunting, fishing, and cleaning, else you wouldn't be making totally infactual comments about "unsanitary". This community (like most every Denmark community) is TINY. If they hunt their main source of nutrition to extinction, they can live with the consequences. By the size alone, this is extremely isolated. I also sincerely doubt they are doing this for huge financial gains (unlike the Siberian tiger hunts, and such).

In short, we call that being a "liberal", and sticking one's nose where it does not belong.

I will say, however, that the whales are on a dock, not a "street".

Dolphins are highly intelligent. I heard just the other day a piece on the radio about how they communicate with each other. Seems each one is given a unique sound by it's mother and uses that sound to identify itself throughout it's life. We use unique names, they use unique sounds.

I hate this kind of stuff. But is it any worse than men killing other men in a game of "my god is better than your god"? We must do better people.

However the posters who are telling you that hunting for food is a necessity and is'nt pretty, make a real good point as well. Killing to survive has been done for thousands of years, and you just hope you're not at the bottom of the food chain.

Terrible sight though. Dolphins are really cool.

There are "harvests" like that in Japan and parts of Indonesia as well. These people need to eat, that's true, but most whales and some dolphins are endangered. That means very little to them: dinner for the next year is all they see.

We are all in for a rude shock, and soon. I enjoy fish as much as most people, but as the factory ships destroy stocks and breeding areas for profit, I seem to enjoy fish less and less... Soon, there will be no breeding stocks left; these factory ships will scour the seas to the last one.

Maybe we can harvest something from that new island of plastic we built out in the Pacific!

OK - I understand IF it is for FOOD - however, you can't tell me in 2009 they can't come up with a more humane way to end a life.

That's bullshit and there is NO reason to make a living creature suffer. I feel the same way about cows, chicken, deer, pigs, etc. There is absolutely no reason to make anything feel pain when taking it's life. It's sick, disgusting and uncalled for.

Good job looking this up. Is truthorfiction.com a trustworthy site? I guess so or you wouldn't be linking to them. Assuming that the pics are not photoshopped, killing the whales is messy and probably very painful. Can't someone come up with a better way to kill animals? Er, oh yeah, being humane would cut profits not increase them.

There are times I think seriously about becoming a vegetarian <--- he says while slow cooking a slab of ribs Alton Brown style. I'm conflicted.

They are weapons used to make people or groups look bad, because the people that do this know the majority of viewers will not take the time to do background research.

I'm actually talking about facts. Simple as that. In general people who call themselves liberal or progressive do not take the time to know any facts, but instead go by how something makes them feel.

Hillary Clinton is a great target, because she's been pretty darn honest in what she wants. She doesn't hide behind anything, and tells people flat out she is a socialist. The term progressive comes from the early 20th century American politics. It was a bunch of people that had no bones idolizing mussolini and hitler before WW2.

Only thing I am saying is that you should learn the history of what you believe in, not just take it at face value.

Yeah. they take an event like this one a totally play on the nuances of peoples cultures.

We call this inhumane? I dunno about that.Well the process of killing the whales involves severing the spinal cord close to the brain stem. I really can't think of anything more humane than this...Without totally obliterating the whale. They got rid of the harpoons in the 1990's because of this. The whales usually die in seconds to minutes.

Oh, and just to be clear again, it was not me who said "Denmark is a shame." That was just in the email sent to me. Also, I don't really focus on Denmark as much as I focus on the group of people who do it. It could be my country for all that matters. I still wouldn't like it. However, I do see you guys posts.

As for the liberals and conservatives topic, I'm not going to comment since that's way off-topic.

I've also read that the whales and dolphins were used for food, which if they are one of their main food sources (which I've also read that they have more than enough food to live off of without this whale killing), I'll understand, but what I don't understand is the horrible way of killing them.

Yeah, they usually go for the quickest way, which uses the least amount of energy. Maybe the lion was a bad example. It still takes like a minute, but anyway. Maybe I was thinking about these lions I saw killing a cheetah on tv. It was pretty crazy.

The hook is designed to catch and sever the spinal cord. I've been going over it and it looks pretty cheap and efficient. Maybe a high powered rifle?
It would be just as bad. Like deer hunting. Maybe they should run out and give them a lethal injection...lol

To Kaotic Lazagna: Thats okay. You do not need to apologize. Well, the Faroe Islands under Danish law and economic community and that's it. They (Faroes) for many years made it on the way to get the whales into shore and slaughter them. But it comes from the days when they were the only option they have to have meat. Many of their livestock died during the winter.
