I'm 18 and looking for something that's affordable to get me to and from work, and has some style to it. I've seen good press about the Yaris (in Europe and Japan) for a while now so glad they brought it here.

yup, it was officially launched on oct05 at the sydney international motor show. ours was delived on 22nov05 and have been driving it since. the model ranges from the low-specced 1.3ltr YR to the mid-specced 1.5ltr YRS to the high-specced 1.5ltr YRX. All are available in 3- or 5-door models. Ours is the 5-door YRS model. Here's a pic:

31...

I always loved the look and power/weight/economy ratio of the JDM Vitz (Gran Turismo), and the TRD options that are available for the Vitz...
My 2006 Yaris RS replaced my 2004 Echo (Vitz) Hatch RS...

Having seen the above pictures, I wish to congratulate the one who has bought echo_hrs' old car.

25 and counting, ha ha. love my white yaris, in canada.

As I am readin' a review for Yaris, around my age is what Toyota is aimin' for next, 20-ish male who just start making money and buyin' car. They got me.

thanx, I understand that feeling of waitin' for it to arrive. Did you order a 3dr or 5dr? And I still don't understand why the Yaris in the state does NOT have tachometer, where all Canadian one has teacho.

I'm getting the 3 door hatchback. And hopefully a white one like yours. I'm still up in the air about manual or auto transmission. I'm ready to just jump in it and take off on a trip. Patience needed here. I've got a toyota tacoma now. But it only gets 20 miles to the gallon and it just eeks me to no end having to throw so much gas money into it.

Ziv
02-01-2006, 04:59 PM
Wow, tacoma, no wonder you wanted a Yaris (for gas). Yup, I have drove to the casino twice(and back -- mostly highway) and drove down to downtown Toronto (just for the ride -- mostly local) and still have about 1/5 gas left. Which was REALLY good, consider I used to drive an nissian Altima and have to fill it up everytime when I came back from the casino.

It is a strange move from toyota. why would they sells the 3-dr and 5-dr in Canada while I heard they only goin' to sell the 3-dr and sedan in US? but then again, I heard that Canadian bought much more echo hatch than the Americans. maybe that's why..... I felt bad for you guys tho, I love my 5-dr. hehe.

I've heard that before... but big deal. so they offer two cars with liftbacks and 4doors... that many more options for someone shopping in this category. they increase the chances someone buys a toyota product. it would be different if the car weren't already developed, marketed, and shipped all around the world and we said thanks, but no thanks for the Xa, will you make us a toyota hatchback... I know it's not YOUR argument, but I just think it's a dumb one... the yaris is more "toyota-ey" anyway. the scion is just marketed differently... still a cool car, but even if there's some overlap, you'd think there would be some who would prefer a 5-door Yaris who wouldn't buy an Xa.

I've seen quite a few people who have stated they would rather have a Yaris 5 door then a Scion xA.

And frankly Toyota does not sell many xA's to begin with.

However I think Toyota still believes that Americans as a whole don't like hatchacks, and frankly there is plenty of reasons for them to believe that.

Having 3 hatchback models (4 if you include the xB) might just be too much for Toyota to stomach right now. If the Yaris 3 door does take off though, then Toyota might rethink that position and bring the 5 door over.

I'm in my 40's and I am interested in the Yaris on a couple issues. I like a small hatchback, er , liftback (excuse me) due to the practicality. I also like the power to weight ratio. I hope it lives up to my expectations. It reminds me of my old VW Rabbit GTi.

02-05-2006, 05:42 PM
......DREAM-COME-TRUE for me!!!!...I'm talking about the beautiful 150-inch-long, ultra compact LIFTBACK, not the "just-another-useless-boring" SEDAN, for the American masses who are clueless that SMALLER is actually better!! (only stupid people equate BIGGER with always being BETTER  )

My present car is a fully loaded 2000 LEXUS LS 400, and while I really love how smooth, quiet, powerful, luxurious etc. it is, I hate to drive it most of the time!!.....WHY, YOU ASK??...SIZE, SIZE and SIZE...I HATE  it's LENGTH with a passion!!!! Yeah, It's nice to take it to the park on a Sunday, or a nice jaunt on the freeway for pleasure, but the thought of circling round and round and round, trying to find a parking spot somewhere when I need to GET SOME REAL WORK DONE, sends SHIVERS up and down my spine!!!!.....Secondly, with gas prices hovering at $3.00/gal here in the LA area, and the the very distinct possibility that they will very likely go even higher in the near future, negates any pleasure I get from the "smooth-quiet-luxurious" ride!!!

......so I now have another commuter car, which is a "stipper" 2000 Geo Metro hatchback that I use for everyday commuting in this horrendous city we call Los Angeles  (read: parking virtually non-existent everywhere you go, half of all the spots are marked "compact", and roads are so congested, you're lucky to find any space at all to move  ) ....I simply am in Love with the Geo's SIZE!!!. At 149.4 inches length I get to park in those teeny tiny spots where 99.9% of all other cars simply have to pass up...I'm talking about those "quasi" spots on the street, where selfish people have parked so badly, so as to waste a ton of space behind and ahead of them!!! Besides that, getting 39mpg in the city and 46 on the highway, I also get to pass by all those gas stations, laughing and sneering at all those other people, each time they spend hundreds of their hard earned money to fill up their Ford Excursions!!

...OK, so what does this have to do with the new Yaris. That's exactly what I'm coming to. While the Geo is small, nice and fuel efficient, it's penalty box in almost every other way. First off, it's not very safe! Then, it's extremely noisy on the freeway sounding like a 747 about to take off, and finally there is it's performance, or lack thereof  ... With 3 cylinders, and ONE FULL liter of displacement the engine manages to make 55 horse power making it excruciatingly slow. Freeway merging is enough to give you nightmares for weeks to come (and mind you I have the manual transmission, which is significantly peppier than the automatic, which I simply cannot fathom how anyone drives :eyebulge: )

So, until now, there has been no real choice in the US, if you wanted a SUPER COMPACT, REFINED, RELIABLE and ECONOMICAL vehicle!! (note I said reliable, because people are going to jump on me and point out that there's the Mini Cooper and VW beetle...but as I pointed out, these are "non-Japanese" UNRELIABLE heaps of trash, which effectively eliminates them as choices!)

Now enter the vehicle that will replace my Geo Metro:
The amazing TOYOTA YARIS LIFTBACK, a 150-INCH-LONG fabulous, ultra-reliable, reasonably economical, amazingly SAFE (more on this later) vehicle, that has been so shrewdly designed, that it's 60 inch height effectively gives it amazing interior space!!! (headroom etc.), not to mention making it also very safe, because it becomes more "height compatible" in crashes with taller vehicles such as SUVs.....and all of this is attained, while still maintaining AMAZINGLY TIDY EXTERIOR DIMENSIONS!!! ONE WORD: SIMPLY AMAZING, and the answer to my prayers!!!....I'm just drooling all over this vehicle because there is simply no "negatives whatsoever" associated with it...it's an oxymoron of sorts: It's compact yet spacious, it's ultra-small, yet ultra safe!! ..Besides it's tall height, this is the first TOYOTA to be designed with their proprietary MICS (Minimal Intrusion Cabin Structure). First off, it got the highest score of any vehicle in the subcompact segment in the EURO NCAP frontal and side crash tests. Besides this, Toyota says the MICS structure is so strong that it has been designed to meet significantly higher internal Toyota standards, than the standardized tests!! They crashed tested it with a 2-ton vehicle (the weight of a mid size SUV)!!!

So, there you have it in a nutshell: Finally a FANTASTIC choice for those who previously had NONE!! (FYI, the upcoming Honda Fit and Nissan Versa do not come anywhere close to the Yaris Liftback in ALL of the above mentioned aspects)

...Oh, and I forgot, I'm 32 years of age

That will give us a good reason to call the Yaris refined; and that is why its fans are not limited to young people. In fact, a lot of middle aged people and seniors like it very much.

I'm 17 (one of the youngest on here, if not the youngest :-P), and am trying to decide if I should get a yaris in the near future or a used VW Jetta/GTi. Both cars are definitely different. The yaris looks really cool and fun to drive and it's priced really well, so that's why I like it. I believe this vehicle may go mainstream like the scions. I have started to save up a down payment for which ever I choose from working while in highschool (2G's), so I don't know. Maybe I'll just wait a year or two though and see how the model does here in the states and keep saving in hopes of paying the whole thing with a big @$$ down payment while pissing of the dealership at the same time. ... BTW. I'm liking the absolute red color. That is sweet.

I'm 50, an empty nester wannabe (2 daughters). I bought the Yaris for it's value. I bought an SSR last year and now that its officially a collector car, I needed something that got 40 mpg, cost under 15k, AND hold its value (to keep miles off my truck).

The Yaris is the only (new) car that fit that criteria. I could've bought an Aveo, but I know in 3 years it'd be a worthless piece of junk.........

Wanted a car to get me to Toronto easily, so I no longer had to bus it on weekends to see friends and when I was going to Toronto to see DJs I wanted to see when they are in town (at least once a month, if not every other weekend).

Wanted a car GREAT on milage, not overly expensive, and one that would last a long time w/o me needing to drop massive $$ on repairs and maintenance all the time. Wanted a car I could consistenly rely on and not worry about - one really well built

The Yaris (a TOYOTA) was that... and that I got a car that I fucking love how it looks and is so cool/cute was a massive bonus that has me even more in love w/ my choice of the Yarii!

Then there's this 55 year old who got tired of the 2005 TRD 4 dr Tundra and decided the right thing to do was give up the egocentric gas hog. Euro versions of the Yaris are better appointed and driven by adults with no plan to upgrade as income increases. In this house we're downgrading to an early retirement. The decision was work harder for a more luxurious car or do something fun and give back to my community....full hippy in a Yaris for me....

I'm 27, and my YarisHB was actually my first "new car" purchase [had always purchased used cars, previously]. I will admit, price was a HUGE factor in deciding on this car. But so was a bunch of other things, like Toyota quality... or fuel economy... or how I'd always previously owned domestics and had TERRIBLE experiences with them [and who ISN'T owned or part-owned by GM or Ford these days?]...

...and well, principle was a huge part of it too - I like the way Toyota runs their business, and I think the princples by which they run their company (continuous improvement, respect for people) are admirable.

I'm 28.. Got into the import scene in '99 When I bought my '97 Civic Ex. It was a great car, I ended up selling it to my friend this winter and started driving my Explorer everyday. That got expensive really quick. I've always been a fan of the Vitz, and wished they were in the states. So I decided it was time to jump on the Yaris with gas prices being the way they are. I love this little car. Can't wait to do a few mods to the suspension and wheels, it'll handle like a go-cart. lol

I am 19 and this is my third car. Once I first got my license (16), my parents bought me a used 98 dodge neon rt. But at 70,000 miles the power steering went out and it was to expensive to fix. At the age of 17 my mom gave me her 2001 Camry le(auto)that was paid off. I started modifying it(a intake-->my screen name lol) exhaust, and tint was basically it. It had about 60,000 mile and I added about 9,??? miles on it. I was also saving my own money at the time working full time(18 yrs old) Once I graduated high school put my first down payment on on the car, and my parents paid for the rest. I only pay for gas and half of the monthly payments on the car as of now. Im glad I don't pay insurance cause it is a killer. I am now in college(full time), graduate in January 2008, and work part time as program assistant. I bought the car because I wanted my own car, not my moms camry(no offense, but camry's are for a mid aged crowd) the yaris looked just right for me. Not to girly not to boyish either. Just what a typical person like me was looking for. And it's a 5 speed whoo hooo!!!

Well, some of us only FEEL young, but it really makes little difference. I bought the Yaris because I wanted a car that was fun to drive, and a new Yaris fit my budget as well as an older Golf. Now I wouln't touch the Golf anyway. As far as "upgrading" to a Corolla, you have to be kidding! Buy a boring "old-guy" car? I'm only 51 fer krissakes!

I'm 25 and this is the first car that I have ever purchased, my last vehicle was a gift from my parents when I started college. When the truck my parents bought for me died I knew I wanted either a honda or toyota since they are known for being reliable. My truck (chevy s-10) was always in the shop so I didn't want to deal with that again. The guys at toyota offered a much better deal than the guys at honda when I was looking at the fit, so I went with the Yaris. It was cute, reliable and in my price range.

I'm 26, bought my Yaris last year at 25. This was my first new car, 2nd hatch (1st was a dodge omni, slow, but could handle better than anything, and it got 35mpg), and my 7th vehicle overall. Got it to replace my dependable but gas guzzling '87 Chevy Astro van. I hate Kia and Hyundai, so those were no-goes. The chevy aveo just didn't do it for me and the mpg wasn't as impressive as I wanted. I needed something that got at least 35mpg and mazda just didn't have what I needed. I also wanted a Toyota for their reputation and my own personal experiences with the brand. I bought a '77 corolla wagon (deluxe 5-speed model with a 1.6L) for $80 at auction) and I would trash that thing and it NEVER quite purring. My mom also had a '81 corolla that had about 500k on it before she gave it away, and my grandmother always had corollas since '72. She swore by them and only owned 3 of them in her lifetime and none gave her issues. My uncle is still driving her '72 around. I also like how toyota has been working with hybrid models while GM was putting in essance useless hybrid systems out. I was planning on getting a xB, but the Yaris came out and had better styling and better mpg. I fell in love with it on the website, and when I went to the dealer to "win" one (sales gimick flyer) they had one on the lot and I bought it after a 20 minute test drive and the salesguy crunching the numbers. They were only going to give me $500 for the van, which was BS because the book value for trade in was $1,250 (it was low mileage and in pretty good shape for being that old.) So I sold it privately for $1,000 on the spot and the guy who bought it gave me the money w/o even sitting in it or hearing it run.

Looks like I'm on the other end of the bell curve at 49. I've owned an Echo, but the Yaris is much nicer in terms of quality and I sure enjoy it on my daily commute. My wife drives Toyota's uber wagon, Sequoia. I get 41 mpg, she gets 14!

Gas mileage and low overall cost of ownership were what attracted me to it. I chose it over the Honda Fit based on price, pretty much. I like the way the Yaris looks compared to the Fit, also. I was more impressed with the Fit but it costs more and mileage isn't as good. :burnrubber:

I'll be 31 soon. I bought the Yaris this past Saturday to replace a 99 Jeep TJ that needed a lot of work. I didn't want to put any more money into the Jeep, was getting sick of buying gas for it, and wanted something brand new and reliable.

I'm still a bit sad everytime I pass a Jeep, but when it comes down to it I think I'll be much happier with the Yaris.

Some people complain that the Yaris is a bit noisy at highway speeds and that it doesn't accelerate fast enough, but it's a huge improvement over the Jeep. I had forgotten what it was like to be able to actually hear the stereo :headbang:

I am 40- I have previously owned an Audi A3 (awesome) - Mercedes C230K - Fast but still both cars were 3000 lbs +. I wanted to get back to basics with a light weight car and no bells and wihistles. My favorite cars have been this type ( 88 VW Fox, 92 VW Golf, 95 Golf) But he Germans Have nothing for me now. If The Yaris Just HAd Some German Brakes....Fun- Will try in the near future to apply a 95 VW Golf Brake System to the Yaris--:w00t:

I'm 33... I think gas mileage was the big thing. Its one thing for me to talk about the environment and another to do it. I was driving a 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe and I traded it in for a 2007 Yaris. I absolutely love the way it looks and my plump 6 foot 2 inch, 270 lb ass actually fits comfortably in it. And if I can get anywhere near the gas estimates this car has, I will be exstatic. :)

18, this car is a definite head turner, i get compliments from ppl of all ages. Except ppl who drive hondas for some reason. I constantly get civics pull up to me and rev their engine in their automatic cars and soda can sounding mufflers with the useless gigantic-taller-than-their-car-wings, thinking i'm revving back when i'm just trying to stay on the hill without stalling out lol. i would do it the other way but i'm not quick enough with the parking brake and i'm more prone to stall out when i'm holding the brake.

36.....bought my Yaris to replace the 1993 Corolla with 192,500 miles. The Yaris will mainly be used to get me back and forth for my work commute. Also, it's a little funner to drive and has a nice sporty look to it. Finally, I could not pass up the price.

I'm 62 years old, just bought my HB last week, and already have 400 miles on it. I also own a 2005Nissan Titan, and my wife drives a 2006 Honda Pilot. Gotta say that this Yaris is, without a doubt, the most FUN car I've ever owned. And I love the 40mpg that I get during my 20-mile drive each way into town.

I'm 34 years old, and bought the Tsport after having owned a Yaris 1.5 Tsport and a Corolla 5 doors 2.0 d4d.
After the Corolla I wanted something smaller and more fun again, and since I was very pleased with the previous model Yaris, the choice was easy !
