LEAD WEIGHTED BLANKETS ON THE FLOORS BABY! thats what you need... hehehe.

I wish toyota used a slightly thicker guage metal for the firewall/floor boards/wheel wells. I would've paid an extra $500 for thicker sheet metal in those three places. It's much easier to prevent an noise problem than to cover it up.

Awesome work SQ - I know it was not your ultimate goal, but any estimate (even rough?) for the db level improvement over stock at highway speeds? This is Xtreme sound deadening, any idea how much weight it adds to the car?

For SQ comps do they ever do rolling (car in motion) judging or is the car always stationary?

Mike

There is one thing I did forget to do when I started this project...I didn't take a dB reading of the car while stationary and moving. The best I can give you is an estimate of the lowered noise floor.

Perhaps 3-6 dB

The weight added is only noticable when you open the doors and the trunk lid. It feels a LOT more solid and substantive. It's also foam added to the interior as well, not just dead mat, that really helps with cutting down the noise.

During the competitions they stage your vehicle in "lanes", you are not judged while moving.

I KNOW you car's moving dB's probably dropped by about 10dB... I saw a huge difference when driving on dirt/gravel roads between stock and stripped interior + 2 layers of mat. And it further improved when I put the interior (read: carpet and seats) back in the car.

I bet I have 3-6dB myself. Alas... I also don't have any measurements. I am hopefully that i'll see some more improvement in road noise when I finally get around to doing my front doors, and install the winder vent shades (air noise)

The one big difference I have is that most of the noise comes through the glass now.

http://www.glassessential.com/Window-Films/ace-security-laminates-automobile-security-film.html

Scrolling down they claim the laminate reduces noise by 4 db.

Awe inspiring work - the one negative I have noticed the more I disassemble and reassemble things is that I seem to be creating new rattles/squeaks where there were none before and I am having a bear of a time trying to isolate them.
I do not have an SQ system, but it is annoying nonetheless.

where would you get a dash mat for a yaris and how much do you think they would cost

talnlnky
01-14-2010, 05:48 PM
hmmm cheaper than I thought... only $40 for the carpet version..
$45 for velour
$50 for suede

no ultimat option

this was for an 08 Base 3dr

I've always thought about doing a dash mat... but really concerned with how stupid it will look... thats pretty cheap... should help keep that funky vapor from the plastic dash from getting on the windshield which would be nice...

I like the idea of that security film too.. .tho i have tints already and am concerned about how that would work... but on the windshield it may be a decent option to help absorb sound.

I'm not too worried about the look personally. They have several colors that will match the dash well. If someone tell me that my dashmat looks like crap, I look at them and say, yeah? My system sounds better than yours...Go eF yourself.

It is effective and very direct. Childish? Perhaps. No one messes with you after that though.

...perhaps it's the mood I'm in at this moment...

three questions:

1) about how much square footage do you think you used for the whole car
... fuck i forgot the other two...

EDIT:

2) what are you using to equalize?

and I'll get back to ya on the third question...:confused:

EDIT:

3) are you getting an HO alt? if so, what kind? i remember The Architect had some issues with them...

The first track is already picked out too...Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra playing the Star Wars theme. Talk about dynamic range!

go out and buy the score cd to the movie The 5th Element. It is awesome for sq listening, and has drops down to 6hz on one track. It is always one of my favorites for listening to decent systems as it give you a chance to crank it up and feel sub 20hz tones.

yeah... cheap plastic like the stuff found in most cars leaches out a gas when warm... so... that wierd stuff on the windows that turns a nasty cloudy white color when you try and wash it off is actually from the dash. Cover it up, and it should reduce the time needed inbetween cleanings.

SQCOMP,
Firstly, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE TO AMERICA.

Secondly, Have you thought of using spray foam filler to deaden the open areas under the chassis? I have used 8 cans of foam filler from Home Depot to NOITCEABLY remove a lot of road noise by filling the underbody framing areas. There are a bunch of hollow areas that resonate something fierce, and with the foam filler, it's very quiet. The trunk area under the spare has a lot of areas also. I found many in the engine area left and right of the motor, and the fender arches have many areas too. Undercoat spray on the front wheel thingies that are attached to the brake backplates make a bunch of noise on rough roads, and now are quiet too. These materials are far less cost than the RoadKill matting and also take your already quiet ride to a quieter stage.... Have Fun, and Again, Thank you for your contribution to America!

Aloha from Hawaii!

Bob,

Interesting idea. But have you ever thought about the chance that it might cause the rust since it might hold some moisture? I am not saying it will. Just curious if there is such possibility.

Thanks.

Hey, here's an idea! Think we can do an SPL system in this Caimen? It already has lots of armor and at leat 3" thick "glass"...

Cool truck. I haven't seen one of those yet.

I seen Strikers and Humvees, but not that thing.

I wouldn't put a system in that thing, because that gun on top is all the music I would need!

Lets put some of those trucks along the America/Mexico border to "persuade" them drug dealers and human traffickers to stay away!

Excellent post and ton of thanks for taking the time to upload all those pictures and the comments to go with.

I've started working on my car this past weekend, but I'm starting at the trunk and working forward. The trunk is now 98% done and tonight I'm pulling the rear seat to get to the floor underneath. This is where your pictures are making it a whole lot easier!

I'm not going to do a killer stereo, but just working on reducing unwanted road noise and going for the more "upscale" feel. I plan on leaving the stock head unit, but upgrading the speakers when I get to the doors (and the speakers in the rear deck). Maybe a small amp to go with. Not sure about that yet.

Anyway, major props to you on your install! I too thank you for your service to our great country!

I'm looking forward to more pics! You're inspiring me!

Holy cow! It was more than a TUG to get the rear seat out! I ended up banging my head on the roof when that sucker gave way. Now I need to remove the seat subframe and the plastic side panels and so forth so I can get to the floor under the seat, etc.

By the way, I noticed a ton of space behind those plastic pieces at the base of the seat. Basically what your heels would touch while sitting down - right behind there. Do you think the addition of some thick foam pieces stuffed in there after doing the sound deadening mat and Ensolite would be worth it? :iono: Seems like an easy place to gain some more noise reduction.

derickveliz2
04-20-2010, 12:39 PM
For me taking the rear seat out was very painful! it was a TUG x 2

I notice the extra space too, and thought about it, after treating my rear seats I don't think needs more foam, it's very quiet back there. It doesn't heart though.

Yes I did the doors too, covering 25 % of the flat areas in the doors with CLD Tiles I took care of the panel resonance, then CCFoam and MLVinyl working as noise barrier.

I have some pictures HERE (http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showpost.php?p=455713&postcount=68)

Check out the pics of the headliner removal, deadening, and replacement. Hmmm...looks like nothing happened! I like it that way. If anyone has any questions about the removal of the headliner, go ahead and ask. There are a few things that you have to do to get it out in one piece.

Where are the pictures? I really want to get there!

back on the first post. I kept them all together. The're at then bottom. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks

Look at this:

Manual (http://www.etimago.com/yaris/repairmanual/Interior.pdf)

Pages 12 through 25, does the manual gives you a good reference to follow and to take the headliner down? or could you add some tips/notes? where to START, etc

In my case I only would like to stick my hand between the roof and the headliner to apply 6 or 8 CLD Tiles to take care of the resonance, so I don't really need to take it all the way down, but loose the ends(corners or sides) one at a time.

Any feed back it's appreciated, thanks!

This is Page # 12 in the Manual
