When the DIY oil change guide says that the factory oil filter is practically welded on, they aren't joking. This picture is from my oil change last week. I could not get the filter off by hand, even with non-slip padding and many grunts. After twenty minutes of trying with my hands, I decided I had to resort to drastic measures...

haha!!!! i had the same problem, changed mine for the first time at work (town dpw) and all of our filter wrenches are for big dump truck filters... not dinky welded on yaris filters. spent an entire lunch just getting that thing off. i know better now and bought my own filter wrench (the band kind) that fits perfectly. nice improvise though!!!

I use the plastic filter wrench from Wal-Mart. Sometimes I have to take a small piece of sand paper and place it in the bottom of the wrench so it will bite into the filter. But this only happens if there is left over oil from the last filter change in the cup of the wrench.

The original filter was one of the tightet that I ever removed.

THE WAY to get a stuck filter off is line the socket that fits it with fine grain (200) sandpaper. Bash it on the filter with a hammer. Then use a breaker bar or ratchet to turn it off. That spike might tear the sheet metal of the filter all up. Then you got real problems...

Never had this issue, dealer did my first oil change for free, lol.

But I have had to resort to violence to remove a filter...Screwdriver worked wonders.

without the proper tools availabe i always find that a fair sized pair of channel lock pliers will work depending on your work space. I had this problem with my GF's honda I havent actually changed the yaris's oil myself yet haha

I worked in shop where driving a big screwdriver through the filter was Shop Procedure; there wasn't a filter wrench of any kind in the place...

That bit I used ended up being bent and useless after I used it. Go figure. Cheap Chinese-made tools... speaking of which, another picture you might laugh at... or cry...

i ended up punching a hole in the filter with a screwdriver and managed to get it off
