View Full Version : Clutch getting replaced; questions

As you may or may not have read in the "clutch shudder thread," the dealership is putting in an all-new clutch (disc, flywheel, throw-out bearing). I have about 24,000 miles on my car. (Same thing happened to my '05 xB at nearly the same mileage.)
I have the full NST shifter lineup on the car, and I'm a bit worried about the dealership tossing out the NST bushing kit in the engine bay, since it's a non-stock item (I'm afraid they'd junk it and put in new parts not knowing).
Do you think I should remove it, or just keep it in there?

I would take it off. Dealers look for anything to get out of warranty work

I would say keep them in there, since they pretty look the same as OEMs. Just let them know and you should be fine (I would be surprised if they refused to work under warranty because of some bushings).
Are you getting an OEM replacement clutch? I got the ACT Stage 1 and it rocks... A bit harder than OEM, but lots of fun to use.

The bushing don't look the same; the OEM ones are black rubber, whereas the NST ones are shiny metal.

I am getting a stock replacement clutch, since they'll foot the bill. My car doesn't need any more than that (I just run a different intake and axleback).

I would put the stock stuff back in. Don't give them any reason to hassle you if you can avoid it.

id leave it in seeing as they probably DON'T know the difference between the two.....

Well, here's a thought: Will they necessarily need to remove the linkage to replace the clutch? (Might be a dumb question, but I'm not sure, honestly)
FYI, I was looking over the service sheet they gave me yesterday, and it says the car has a warped pressure plate.

make sure its on your work order and youll be fine...but make sureee its on there, that is your guarentteeee
i wouldent doubt your pressure plate is warped, they wouldent have wrote something like that down if it wasnt...ask to see for yourself if you doubt them.

wont be an issue at all, and if it is, take it into a more reputable toyota dealership.

I don't think that assembly comes out to drop the clutch, but I can't remember for sure.

Yeah; I'm thinking if they saw the pressure plate was warped, they probably already took out whatever they needed already. I'll probably just leave it.

I changed the clutch on my wife's corolla. I made a bridge across the shock towers out of 2x4s to support the engine while I dropped the tranny. It was a real bitch of a job. Your lucky your dealer will cover it.
man, i wish i could change a clutch!

Well, I'm still debating. Unfortunately, I'm kinda running out of time since I've been working a lot. I also have the K&N intake system on the vehicle; I hope they don't mess that up, either!
I'm just trying to think whether or not they'll even need to disconnect the linkage to change out the clutch ...

kinda depends on tech doing job. each guy has his/her own way of doing things. from what im told they wouldn't have to take apart that linkage if it was done here.....

it will have to be removed if they do it properly. to change a clutch the tranny needs to be removed. it is a serious job. i did it once, never again. left wheel assembly needs to go away and if ure good the transmission can be slid over to the left, didn't know that so i ended up putting it right down to the floor, either way, yes that needs to be removed. i doubt they will say anytihng

Regarding those bushings, do they improve the vague feeling of the shifter? And how much more vibration (buzz) is tranferred back through to the stick with the rubber dampening gone?

That is exactly what they do. I haven't noticed (or heard reports of) any increased vibration. They aren't attached to the shifter, only the cage or the linkage, depending on which bushings you meant.

The NST Bushing Kit is great. Much improved feel, no extra vibration to speak of.

I voted remove because you wouldn't want them to ignorantly throw them away.
and if you tell them it's in there they might screw you over with the warranty
best to just be safe

I'm also contemplating having them put the TRD Performance Clutch for the Yaris, and seeing if they'll let me pay the difference.

i doubt it seeing as they get the Toyota clutch for jsut about nothing, give it a shot, you never know. they might make u pay for the part ureself 100% but the labour will be covered

I called the dealership about possibly getting a TRD clutch put in instead; I'm awaiting a response from the dealer.

Awesome want to hear about this. I HATE the stock clutch. It feels so wimpy and the engage length is way too long.
Keep us updated!

Took the NST bushing kit and short shifter out today. I'm still waiting to hear back from the dealer regarding the TRD clutch.

Oh, it engages. It just chatters in first and reverse.
And ROCKLAND: I'd gladly put something else in if the dealer would pay for it.

so hold up, the clutch is covered under for free replacement if its within in warrenty period?
if so thats sick! my mom wanted to relearn how to drive stick on ym car lastnight and the clutch feels like its in a different spot now. if it can be covered when if finally does go, that is really really good

Well, if you know how to drive clutch, and your clutch is messed up under 36,000, there's likely something wrong with your clutch. Now, if you're riding the clutch, don't know how to drive a manual, or whatever, then maybe. But really: 36,000 miles should be pretty darn simply to achieve on nearly any clutch. We went 120,000 miles on our Civic with the original clutch (we sold the car, and it could still scratch 2nd gear). Ditto that with my 1998 Civic, 1998 Prelude.

lol, well i figured my mom still remembered how to drive it, lol. she drove an 85 corolla for 14 years on the original clutch (over 500,000km)
Thirty-Nine
01-12-2010, 01:29 PM
Yeah, there's no reason she should have any issues with the Yaris!
On a related note, I just got a call from the dealership, and it looks like they will indeed put the TRD clutch in (minus the difference in cost from the stock part). They're going to get back to me regarding the price difference.

well she has been driving her auto 2001 camry for a while now....lol.
do u find an issue with the drive by wire?
Thirty-Nine
01-12-2010, 01:34 PM
Well, I think the Yaris' clutch is a bit touchy. Whether that's a function of the DBW or not, I don't know. I'm not a huge fan of it, though ...

Dealer called: Difference would be $328 vs. stock clutch. That seems a bit stiff; probably not worth it. Thoughts?

so that's the difference in price between stock and TRD clutches? Because the install is the same, right?
What is the part number for the TRD clutch?

Well, I just called back, and it looks like my service rep was thinking the same thing I was. $328 is the full retail for the kit. However, I'd be paying the difference between stock and TRD, which is only $40. I am having them order the TRD part (for $40, why not)?
