I'm not a compulsive shopper. There is nothing in the retail world that I just have to have. As such I have never felt that I had to win an eBay auction, and have always had difficulty in finding a decent deal on eBay due to the usually high, and sometimes even outrageous, shipping costs charged by the sellers.

Aside from those things the whole idea of an unattended auction tool seems slimy and dishonest. So no, I have never used and will never use an auction "sniping" tool.

Some eBay sellers may be taking advantage of the process and inflating their shipping fees to manipulate their listing fees but not everybody does.

I just sold my old point-and-shoot camera, what you would consider a small, light item, and ended up paying more than $10 to ship it to the other side of the country :eek: :eek: :eek: (OK, I wrapped it very well, though, in a very sturdy - read somewhat heavy - box, and chose a fast delivery so the guy doesn't have to wait a month for his item), but still...

I "only" charged $8.50 for shipping because 1) it seems like a lot already :eek: and 2) I thought that's all the market could bear, so part of the shipping is on me but the buyer will never know that and probably thinks he paid way too much.

Shipping is expensive these days!!

Keep in mind that when people offer "free shipping" the cost is probably built-in to the cost of the item as well. There is no free lunch.

I agree with Brian. There are deals everyday. I research all big item purchases and know what a great price is. A few items I lost, I got at a later date for a better price.

I likely would have sold that camera locally on CraigsList, making shipping a moot point and bypassing both eBay's and PayPal's fees at the same time.

Brian: thanks for the reply. I usually put heavy / bulky stuff on CL, and small stuff or more specialized stuff on ebay. I have furniture on CL right now if anyone is interested and a couple of trinkets on eBay :wink: :biggrin:

I know what you mean, though. I found something I wanted the other day on ebay, but the guy had a $51 shipping fee, I kid you not, to ship something relatively small domestically. :rolleyes: I emailed him "did you perhaps mean $5 instead of $50" but it wasn't a mistake. I put the listing in my watch list just to see what would happened, nobody bit. $51 shipping fee, I'm not surprised.

I actually recommend eBay over CL when you don't know how to price an item and want to let the market decide for you.

For example, I had some older (sorry, I mean "vintage" :wink: ) designer purses, and some memorabilia and had no idea how to price it. I put it on ebay with no reserve and let the market decide. In one or two cases, I was completely blown away by how much people were willing to pay for the stuff.

I think you reach a much wider audience with ebay than you would locally on CL. One thing I've noticed, is that unless you are selling highly tradeable merchandise like ipods, laptops, etc., brand name stuff, you just never can tell what people are going to buy.
