That was just a little one, maybe just to keep us humble and remind us to stock up on emergency supplies :frown: so we can be prepared when the Big One hits.

ugh

I do OK with earthquakes during the day, knock on wood.
Those that wake you in the middle of the night are a different story.

We've had a swarm in our area too sharing the the same fault line last year, which can be a sign of a big one on the way (that's how we had Northridge 16 years ago). Nothing's happened yet, but anyday now...

4.1?

Wake me up when you have a real earthquake. A 4.1 is a fart in the middle of the night that makes you turn over in bed.

I agree 4.1 is small but if you happen to be right at the epicenter, then you feel it real well. I should know, I live on the Hayward fault.

We're all waiting for the "Big One" to hit. We're 20 years overdue. Over the past couple of years, I've seen more and more "classes" and ads on the buses, etc., about getting prepared for it. Scary.

It's not something to look forward to! I had moved to San Jose two days before that big one back in '89. It's not something I care to ever experience again.

Oh, you were in San Jose at the time? Yeah, you must have felt it real well.
I was in Marin, still driving my Honda Civic 1st gen. The earthquake and the aftershock tossed that little car around for what seemed like minutes (of course it was over sooner than that). Fortunately, I was stopped at the time, reading on campus, waiting for my night class to start, so it wasn't too scary. People in the tall buildings in the SF Financial District, people underground, and just about everywhere anything can fall on them got really, really scared. And then of course, who can forget this

I can say that I'm lucky not to have experienced one during any of my trips to Cali over the years

Yeah it was very minor. Barely even felt it. Simular to a large truck driving by just shook the ground slightly.

SF bay area is a good spot to visit. I've been there myself. If you get a chance to visit Solvang thats a nice place to stop and see also, but its quite a drive from SF :\

yeah, lots! As your trip approaches, you should post up in the regional forum and ask again and we'll come up with ideas for ya.

In the meantime you can always ask Bamboo the YarisWorld Traveler ;)

(check out the Bamboo thread

Or maybe he's not really dead and likes to randomly jog through certain towns rocking the ground and setting off car alarms

You're right, my first post was much ado about nothing. Japan, now that's something else.

So today, just to be counted, we got a little 6.5 up in Eureka (North Cal, outside of the Bay Area).

Better?

Fortunately the area isn't dense and no casualty, thankfully.

California peeps, are you preparing yourself? Seriously, though.

yeah! There you go! the six pointers are average. After that people actually start growing hair on sacks. :help:

Seriously though, have your emergency plan. Know what your surroundings are and where to go.

That's scary, glad you're ok! Do you actually feel everything shake? Does anything fall off shelves/tables at that scale number? Not sure I could live with that fear, I would be afraid something would collapse on my cats, even in a small earthquake!

tomato
01-11-2010, 05:17 PM
^ Oh, don't worry, cats and animals are very smart about stuff like that. In fact, some experts try to predict natural disasters by looking at animals' behavior.

Yeah, I've had some trinkets fall off my shelves once or twice but luckily nothing more. You may or may not feel anything, depending. If you're walking around or driving, you probably won't. If you're in a building when things start shaking, then yes. I wouldn't let that stop me from coming though! You'd be surprised how people learn to live with it. Maybe we're all in constant denial, but we do. :iono:

Right back at ya. You be real careful over there and come back home healthy

OK peeps, you've probably all have heard about Haiti's disastrous earthquake by now?

I haven't found out yet how or where, or if we'll even be allowed to mail essentials directly there, but there are organizations on site trying to help out (red cross, UNICEF, doctors without borders, etc.) so if you got an extra bill or two laying around, you know what to do.
