View Full Version : What kind of smart phone do you have?

OK, I'm in the market for a new phone so I thought I'd conduct my own little survey
Post here the kind of phone you have (iPhone, Droid, Razr, BlackBerry, etc.) and how you like it.
http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-talk029.gif (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)
(I know I did an iPhone v. Blackberry thread a long time ago, and there are similar threads specific to one device only, but there is so much more choice out there, it's time for an update ).
Thanks :headbang:

I have a HTC Hero (Sprint edition), which is a 'Droid, that was a Christmas present. It took some getting used to considering my old cell phone was pretty basic; but now I love it! I have converted several songs to ringtones (easy through a 'Droid app) and now when my son calls it is Alice in Chains Check my Brain, my wife it's Dean Martin's Ain't That a Kick in the Head? and most everyone else it's Dick Dales Misirlou (a few get Kool and the Gang's Jungle Boogie). Plus I can read email, surf the 'Net, play music or watch videos.
Cheers! M2

Same thing with the iPhone, apparently, when you're out and about all day, the battery runs out if you use the Internet too much?

i own a 3gs, i love it. Battery lasts all day for me. heck, im on my 4th day without charge (21% left). I surf the web when i need to (avg 30 min/day) and text a good amount. The sites i visit have iphone formatted pages, so i can just turn off the 3g and stay on edge all day.
I like the droids, alot....but not enough to buy one...i work with droids everyday at work and i still just cant find a reason to get one.

I have the Samsung Rogue (Verizon) which is really not a smart phone, but it does a lot for a cell phone. I like that it has a touch screen and you can go online and it's pretty fast along with a qwerty keyboard. And it was free ( every 2 year free phone contract) now I have unlimited minutes with the plan which is only $69.99 a month. Phone doesn't require the extra money per month for smart phone but I do have to pay an extra $9.99per month for memory.
It does what I need to do.

I have the iPhone 3G and while it works for many things it can be quite annoying, The inability to multitask is something that irritates me at least once per day, it checks email at random times despite me having it configured to never do so, its call quality is horrible (I often have to ask people to repeat themselves), and if I leave the 3G antenna on it uses power at more than triple the rate without it.
I also intensely dislike that I have no control over the underlying parts of the phone unless I hack it. The iPhone's application handling and memory management is so jacked up that I much prefer to have the ability to kill processes at will. The artificial limitations on the brightness an application can use cripples "flashlight" utilities, so I go around them. Etc.
Still, I don't complain too loudly as neither the phone nor the monthly plan cost me anything. My employer picks up the tab.
If I were buying on my own today I would go with the Nokia N900. It is unlocked and quad band capable (meaning you can use it with any network), it runs a fork of Debian Linux called "Maemo" and has no restrictions in place, meaning that you have root access out of the box and can load just about any package from Debian's vast repositories, as well as applications that are specifically designed for it.

I just upgraded from a LG Voyager to a Blackberry Tour 9630. I got it mostly for two reasons: I needed to be able to get full html email and follow links in them, and for Pandora. The AUX port is the same size as the AUX port in the yaris so it plugs right in and I haven't touched my MP3 player since. It also charges separately from the audio. You get REAL internet on it and so far I've found some great free apps. It can also let me use my phones internet on my laptop. The camera is only a 3.2megapixel but the pix look good. Overall I'm really liking it.

MyTouch3g non-rooted as I'm still in the learning curve. just to clarify I hope most of you understand when someone says 'droid' they're referring to a phone by motorola.
Android phones are phones running an operating system called android. the droid does run android ironically, yet they're paying George Lucas for the use of the name....motorola=idiots when it comes to name choice

Plus with my upgrade through AT&T it was only 100 dollars, hard to pass up.
My girlfriend and I both used to have blackberries and absolutely HATED them. Terrible user interface, froze constantly, crappy browser, and cheaply constructed. I can't say too much about any of the other smart phones because I have no experience with them. Only if you need it though. If i was running a business I would probably get a smart phone. All I do is call and text and occasionally take a pic or two. For me a phone that has all the bells and whistles is just a time waster at this point. Now when the price point on these phones is within reason I would probably get one. I have a samsung a767 which was free so I have no interest in spending $600+ on a gadget that can do things I dont need to be done.:iono:
Heck for 600+ I could get a rear brake conversion kit:laughabove:

Yeah, it does depend on your lifestyle and job. If you have a job where you really can't even use you phone, then it's not worth it. Or if you have a job where you're already at a computer all day.
But if you have the freedom to jump online periodically throughout the day, it's great. It's a great tool if you need to find out about something, find a place/business, while you're on the go ect...
And remember, in most cases, smartphones are only about $200-$300 with a two year plan. Not $600.

root and a good build of android from a decent coder *cough*CM*cough* makes the WORLD of difference with speed, battery life, glitches, everything.
I was actually dissatisfied with it until I did it.
the thing I love the most is the multitasking. everything you can think to do at once, it can do.
I have a Nokia E71.
Stainless steel body, great form factor, all the features you could hope for, and fantastic battery life. It looks like a Blackberry, but doesn't feel like you're talking into a Pop-Tart. S60 takes some getting used to, but it's a quick OS.

Yes, I've heard a lot of people say that. Just about 90% of people around me have an iPhone.
I forgot to say that call quality as well as internet speed is important. the iPhone isn't spectacular in either. Don't take it the wrong way, though, I know it's a cool device  :headbang: just wondering if there is something else that would meet my needs that's all
battery will suck with the original firmware, but if you root it the battery life is somewhat extended

iPhone 2g (second hand). I had an HTC Quickfire (Quicksilver?), not sure of the name anymore. I had so many issues with that phone and the touch screen. 6 months into use and it hardly worked at all for me. The boyfriend was able to upgrade his phone (iPhone 2g) to the iPhone 3g, and he gave me his 2g since I still had 1.5 years left on the contract before I could upgrade again for a lower price.
I love the iPhone. I wish I had the ability to send SMS (still not available on the 2g, even with most recent software release). The amount of apps out there are phenomenal. The ones I use the most are Facebook, LoseIt (helping me track my calorie intake so I can lose weight), Pandora, The Weather Channel, and of course text messaging. I have a bunch of games that I play when I'm bored or forgot to grab a book for the daily train ride. I also have an app for reading MS Word/Excel files on the phone (thank you Google Docs for the tranferrability too)!

OK, haven't yet decided about the phone but I've just ordered a bluetooth headset already (checked for compatibility, device appears compatible with most phones) and these things are kind of handy (mandatory in California if you want make calls while driving). I picked an inexpensive one, just in case I put it down somewhere and forget it, which I'm totally liable to do
what do you think?

Ok, but I must have missed something here, what phone do you have? Looks like you found a hack that works for you. Let's talk later
rooting enables you to have acces to all the phone (areas where before it wouldn't let you enter now become accessible ), it gets rid of the carrier specific software which is inefficient and bogs down the phone, also if you get a custom ROM it will be optimized for performance by making the kernel (the main operation code) much more stable. The battery life will be extended by trimming out unnecessary parts of the software that would force the phone to almost a constant ON state (i.e gps always on or constant 3G connectivity).
I think I understand what you're saying. Kind of like reformating a computer when you get it out of the box to get rid of stuff you don't need that will bog down performance. I get the concept, not sure I'd be able to do it though. Did you find good info online about that?

The "rooting" explanation is over my head right now. I gotta try to figure out the basics first.
Ultimately, I'm probably going to decide according to a combination of factors: cost to own, how it feels in the hand, call quality, design, speed
Right now I'm shopping for plans, as well, so this might limit my choice somewhat.
The Google Nexus phone is unlocked, and that's a strong point for me. I f'ing hate contracts.

They actually do offer a slightly cheaper plan for individuals who will buy the phone full price online directly from Google, but you only save $130 over 2 years. The advantage is no contract, of course.

I like a phone that has a good call quality and battery life, and doesn't cost me an arm and a leg . The only thing I'm not sure about is how long am I gonna be happy with such a small screen, though. Also, the BB is not a strong internet surfer.

Verizon has the best coverage here but it's also the most expensive.

The Hero has some really good reviews. Do you like it?
As I said a while back, I got a HTC Sprint Hero for Christmas and love it! My old phone looked like it came from the 1980s, so it took a week or so for me to adjust; but now I absolutely can't live without it!

I have the Samsung Rogue (Verizon) which is really not a smart phone, but it does a lot for a cell phone. I like that it has a touch screen and you can go online and it's pretty fast. And it was free ( every 2 year free phone contract).
It does what I need to do.
Here's my phone:

Honestly, I don't know about the battery life because I keep mine charging most of the time. But during the few times I didn't, it depended on how much I surfed the 'Net or used the GPS (two battery-draining capabilities).
And the pinch-zoom is really an excellent feature, especially for old guys like myself. It really is an exceptional phone, and now I wonder how I ever lived without one...

CNET only gives it 3.5 stars (presumably because now there are more sophisticated phones out there for the Hero to compete with) but I don't know, it sure looks like a sweet little device to me and the carrier's plan is the most flexible for my needs. Can't wait to go see it in person.
I wonder what Apple is going to say tomorrow, will they announce a 4g iPhone for June?

OK. I'm making some progress. Out of a dozen phones, I've only about 3 left now:
1. HTC Hero
http://tatethatcher.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/Sprint_Hero.jpg
2. Blackberry Bold 9700
http://www.cellphones.ca/news/upload/2009/09/BlackBerry-Bold-9700-Onyx-T-Mobile.jpg
3. Nexus One
http://dustbowl.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/download-01-nexus-one-540x442.jpg
I say "about" because there is always a close second or third ;)
No device out there is perfect, and I am further restricted by the choice of carriers, plans, how much I am willing to spend, etc.
Each of these phones has its own set of strong points and also some flaws.
Tomorrow I am going to the stores and try to play with the Hero and the BB a little bit more so I can get a better idea and try to narrow it down further.
The Nexus one is a big question mark, of course. Google wants you to believe it's absolutely perfect    Seriously, they and Tmobile present it as the "best Android on the market right now" Sure it's the most powerful and gorgeous but it's not quad band and there is no tactile KB so it's not perfect. :iono:
Plus, I went through the 6 page purchase agreement for the U.S. (yes, I printed it, and read every damn word ) and Google thinks it's entitled to a whole $45 restocking fee if for whatever reason the phone doesn't work out for you. (Out here, it's tethered to TMobile on 3G , and AT&T on Edge, and TMobile's coverage can be spotty while AT&T's edge is ridiculously sluggish). Also, beware that if you engrave a google Nexus phone, you can't return it.

OK, what'd ya get?
As for the keyboard on the HTC Hero, it does take a little getting used to. But considering that my last phone required "morse code" to type text messages (y'know, to type 'howdy' you have to type '44 666 9 3 999') it is still a lot easier. Sure, my son's phone with a keyboard is quicker, especially considering he can type with his two thumbs faster than I can with all ten of my fingers (but on my phone I hunt 'n peck with one finger); but the Hero is an improvement for me.
And I still love that I can have Dean Martin's Ain't That A Kick In The Head? as the ringtone when my wife calls!

I hesitate to say because I might disappoint a lot of people, but I got a beautiful Blackberry Bold 9700 w/ TMobile.
http://reviews.cnet.com/smartphones/rim-blackberry-bold-9700/4505-6452_7-33785661.html
That device is a HUGE improvement over a lot of the older Blackberries in a lot of ways.
You should see that thing in person, I mean it's absolutely gorgeous.  Built like a tank. Great call quality, great battery life, incredible display (you can see the screen real well in direct sunlight which was important to me), fits extremely well in the hand (so I won't drop it), tactile keyboard with raised keys, WIFI, GPS, camera / flash, all that, and everything on it is standard so I can use my headsets, adaptor, etc. No proprietary anything. You can open the device easily if you need to change the battery or the card YOURSELF.
In the beginning, I kept touching the screen, but once I got over that, and learned a few commands, I found that the device is incredibly responsive.
The Internet experience of course lags years behind what you guys with Android phones can do, but they're going to keep coming out with Android devices and they're only going to get better, so I don't mind waiting a little bit for the right device for me. (A Hero with a slider KB would have been PERFECT, and the SAMSUNG MOMENT is just a little too bulky.)
I kept looking at half a dozen phones, and always came back to the BB. The device has a lot of great qualities, plus TMobile worked with me and got me an economical plan that fits my needs (most of the plans cost close to $100 and force you to buy a lot of whenever minutes, and I don't really talk all that much on my cell). They've also agreed to unlock it so I can use it in Europe.
I also like that I can just pop my sim card in there and I'm ready to go. No porting numbers or dropping numbers (last time I changed carriers, they managed to drop my number and I had it for years!!)
I couldn't get used to typing on the Hero and made a lot of mistakes, even when dialing phone calls (of course, I was using the display phone, so who knows how long that thing had been up without a reboot and how people treated it, but still, the experience wasn't pleasant.) I think that people like me ( coming from a RAZR) who never text or hardly ever), probably need a tactile KB to start with.
Also, I find that SPRINT sill employs people who don't know what the f..ck they're talking about. While trying to sort out some of the details, plans, etc., I got contradictory answers every other day. Finally, today, I just gave up with Sprint and called back TMobile and got the BB.
I just hope the coverage / network with Tmobile doesn't become an issue when all these Nexus One people get on the network (like what happened to AT&T when all these iPhone people joined the network, in San Francisco the AT&T network is really, really bad).

Sorry
Although, that's my plan B. In California, we have 30 days to return the phone and cancel the contract (other states, 14 days only). So if the BB doesn't work out, I could always send it back, pay a small restocking fee, and get the Google phone instead, but then the plan rates are a little higher, or if I want to keep my plan, I'd have to buy the phone right out. Plenty of time to think about that.
PS Don't kick the BB until you try it ;)
Seriously, according to CNET it is one of the TOP 5 phones right now (others are iPhone 3GS, Motorola Droid, Nexus One, and something else, I forget.) Most sites gives this particular BB many thumbs up (except for the browser)
See, having the BB now allows me to function and do what I need to do on the go, while I can now take my time and keep my eyes open for what's coming in the market in the next year or so.
It is possible to get out of the contract early, so it's not a death sentence or anything

What kind of apps do you like?
blackberry bold 9700, love it, i hate virtual keypads. battery is great, calling quality is real good. i came off an iphone and a g1. the bb is my choice overall so far. mostly because of call quality and battery life
You gave up an iPhone for a BB? wow. Don't you miss the ease of internet browsing, the touch screen and the large display size of the iPhone?
Call quality and battery life were important factors for me too. Having a device that can stay on standby for days without needing a charge is a strong plus for me because I'm infamous for forgetting to charge my cellphones.
Well, mine is on its way now. :0)
I love that they give you a little case with a belt clip to put it in, too. It's a detail, but nice touch. Who does that anymore?!

lets you make comparisons of devices side by side (CNET used to do that as well, but now the comparisons are too streamlined and not very useful)

Yes, that's right.
If anyone is interested in the Google One, please note that right now, it only works on 3G on Tmobile, and on AT&T's Edge network.
A Nexus One for Verizon is coming out in March, so we'll see if they decide to manufacture a CDMA only phone/
I was thinking if they come up with a phone that works on *any* network, then I would consider it, even with a virtual keyboard.
But also keep in mind that not all carriers offer plans if you bring in your own phone. Sprint apparently doesn't (I asked).
shopping for plans is almost as complicated as shopping for the phone itself

I currently use a BB Curve 8350i for work, on a Nextel network. I love the phone but hate the network. For my personal use I have the Env Touch on Verizon, I actually looked at the iphone in the store and did not like the interface or the missing multitask ability, that I have on both of my phones. Plus its on AT&T's network which I hear nothing but complaints from people I know. My father always has call quality issues and call drops all the time (in NYC). My one friend that I know owns an iphone has gone through 4, cause they just stopped working(wasnt covered btw) and also complains of call quality. ^Nextel is an alright network, but it there coverage seems to be really spotty in my state. They actually had to install an interior network just to get our coverage decent cause before in our building there would be constant drop calls or youd have to go to the edge of the building for the person to hear you. I actually was pretty impressed with Verizons network when we went on the metro down to DC, and my phone had full coverage on the entire trip, including underground, and my nextel had zip. A few other people I saw with Iphones also had none. These are my personal experience though.

I think the BB you got is great, and it makes sense if you would rather use your phone to actually make calls and send messages and stuff. The Nexus One is basically a great little computer with lots of potential... But I've read that the call quality is not the best, and it can't be all that great to send a lot of SMS messages with a touchscreen.
So, in a nutshell, it completely depends on how much you actually use your phone as an actual phone, and how much use (or not) you would have from all the extra features that the N1 provides.

That's kind of the point exactly. I don't need to surf the net 24/7. A lot of people I know have gotten the iPhone instead of their land line or whatever. I already have a land line, + t1 everywhere I go. I think I'll survive if I don't have a full browser in my pocket for a couple of hours
So I think that BB will answer my immediate needs just fine (just the same way my Yaris gets me from point A to point B).
To be honest, I don't think the N1 is completely ready just yet. There are some little things that don't work quite right. For ex., you can do voice commands but you can't if you're using a blue tooth headset? It's got the fastest processor on the market, but it's having problems running on TMobile's 3G network? I don't know. I think I'm gonna let the kids do the beta testing and wait for the N2 or N3. We'll see.
There's going to be more devices on the market comes Spring, and you and I both know the minute the money changes hand and I buy something (anything!) then the next best thing will be released on the market. :iono:

nah...I did, but if you tilt the screen you could see where you drew....my sister and her friends were always hacking it haha

arghhhhhhhhh you guys are making me really   envious with your android's (sigh)
i see that tmobile as added an upgraded MyTouch as of a couple of days ago? (with a 3.5 mm jack and 8G on board out of the box) and some new phones are about to come out in the Spring. I wonder if I jumped the gun a little bit with my purchase ***sigh***
And it doesnt matter when you buy a phone, there is always gonna be something new out there, something that makes people turn their heads for a few seconds...once you find something you like stick with it....they all eventually fade out...no point waiting for the "newest new phone" you'll never get one then haha

I agree with that. I was actually just gonna say that to Shroomster
The trick I guess is to find the right phone in the first place. Once you do, then don't look back because they keep coming out with new stuff every 3 months, so whatever you get is "obsolete" almost right out of the box :frown:
I'm 85% happy with the BB so far. There is a LOT to like . But I don't know if I want to look at a screen that small for the next 2 years, so I guess I have got to decide that.
The N1 (with a huge screen but no physical KB) continues to have G3 connectivity problem.

Thanks. I've been reading up quite a bit since I first posted, but ultimately if you want the users' impressions, forums like the one you just pointed to are a good place to go ask your questions. I'm there now, checking it out. Good stuff :headbang: There is a crackberry forum, too, a wealth of info in there.

Just in case you haven't, you might want to look at a task killer (I use advanced task killer. pretty handy if you want to keep the phone running quick. also remember to clear EVERYTHINGS cache.

OK, so I charged my BB Sunday night around 6 or 7 pm and it's still .... a third full !!! (now it's Wednesday eve). I didn't use it extensively, just throughout the days, a bit of data, a bit of voice, a couple of maps... here and there, but dang, 3 days?!! that's f'n IMPRESSIVE. You gotta love a phone that doesn't quit.
I got another week to decide if I keep it or what. I dnk, other than the screen size, and maybe somewhat limitted apps, I gotta tell you, it's really a f'n awesome device. :headbang: :headbang:

OK. I have an announcement to make ....
drumroll....
...
I have returned the blackberry.
For the record, the only problem I had with the BB 9700 was/is the size of the screen. That little thing is really impressive, totally addicting, can do practically everything but make coffee. But the display is so damn small and not all aps let you zoom in. Otherwise, it was a near perfect device for me.
I returned it because I think the timing of my purchase was wrong. They're coming out with all these new phones right now (tmo has a couple coming out in the next couple of months, including one with the latest Android OS and a sliding tactile KB, and even BB is making another one with a bigger screen as we speak, so I decided to just wait a couple more months and see what happens. If the new phones are unimpressive, then I guess I'll just reorder the BB.
Also, I really would like to see the N1 in person one more time before I sign another 2 y K with anybody.
Sooooooooo there you have it, my search for the "perfect" smartphone resumes ...
thoughts? comments?

Id have to totally agree, I have never gotten use to touch screen. I have the eng touch which I got specifically for the touch screen but also the physical keyboarding which for me is a requirement of any phone I want, I tried both the iPhone in the stores and my friends, and I still don't like virtual keyboards 100% on any phone

Ditto. Coming from more than a decade of Palm use, which required hunting for tiny keys with a stylus or hand writing one jacked up "Graffiti" letter at a time, the finger-usable on-screen keyboard and the trainable on-the-fly spelling correction of the iPhone are most welcome changes.
Also, the less moving parts a device has (such as a flip out keyboard, like on the G1) the less likely that something can break, and the less likely it will permanently steal valuable screen real estate (like a BlackBerry).

The Palm Pre + is impressive but the tactile KB is really small, takes a bit of getting used to.
If you can wait, rumor has it they're making another N1 with a tactile KB called the Enterprise? I forget where I put that link now.
Was playing with a BB Tour yesterday and I noticed the kb is much better (raised keys) than the 9700 I had (keys are more cramped together). You wouldn't know it by looking at pics of the 2 devices next to each other, because they KB looks identical bu it's really not. Of course, the tour doesn't have the track pad and that track pad :bow: is 100% better than the trackball.
N1 should have a trackpad IMO

I also agree,
With redicuoulsy high prices, I just got an ol' fasioned flip phone wilth no texting or net access for a cell in addition to my land line.
I grew up in an era when all we had was 6 TV channels, no cell pones and certainly no internet. I do not need to be conected to the entire world 24/7 to feel like I'm not missing something.
BTW, I'm not against new technology. I got my first computer back in about 1983 (C-64) and presently have three computers connected to the net, all of which I assembled myself.
I just shun technology that I do not need or want and have no desire to have something just for the sake of having the newest this or that.
The phone companies keep inventing new services that we really don't need just to pad their coffers and we all fall for this scam.
It would seem that the phone companies and those making the smart phones are much smarter than many of the people using them.
I know people who can barely afford food and other life's necessities because they need to pay their smart phone bills.
