How long do you think that you will really own your Yaris?
I am just asking because when I was younger I would change cars like underwear.
Now that I have this wonderful little Yaris I plan on owning it for 16 more years if all works out.

Peace

I drove my f-150 as a daily driver for 10 years and I still own it, so I am betting I get twice that out of this Yaris. I am not really into the whole selling your car thing so I will probably own it until it gets totaled out. Hopefully that wont happen though.

I would like to own my "Yarrie" for at least 11 years, that is how long I had my "Callie" a 97 Chevy Cavlier.

I found out how much money I had thrown way by owning then selling cars.

This is a great car and I hope to keep it around as long as it wants to be around.

I will probably keep my Yaris until it hits 200k. I'm at 83k now, so almost half way through my ownership. I do not have a love affair with my Yaris and can think of many other sedans I would rather have.

I would love to own this car for 16 years... tho I hope it is not my daily driver at that time.

i suspect I will keep it as long as I can keep from getting in a wreck, and as long as stuff doesn't start to break on it. Once I have to start replacing parts every few months... then i'll be looking to buy a new econobox.

I'm probably going to trade mine in within the next couple of weeks on a Tundra.
I just moved, so I don't need to commute anymore. I need a truck for firewood.
It's been a great car for the last 3 years, I just wished it was a little more comfortable for a 6'2" person.

I owned my last car for 16 years, and only replaced it because I wasn't good enough technically to solve the issue.

Ever replace an oil pump seal on a DSM engine? Please shoot me now

My eclipse has 230K miles on it, same engine and transmission. No major engine failure, or anything other than standard maintenance. I just can't afford to drop the entire transfer case / engine / etc. to replace a 12 dollar part.

So the car sits... in the driveway.... cold and alone :iono: I can't seem to part with it due to it being my first car and all.... /sigh

Anyway yea. Here is hoping I get 20 years or 2 million miles, which ever comes first!

Yea, I will keep mine until it starts breaking down and starts needing more repairs than its worth... even if I magicly get rich, there are so many other things I rather spend the money on. Don't plan on kids/family at ANYtime so I think I can rock a 3 door forever.

I have owned over 25 cars in my lifetime. Some for a month or 2. The longest was a 88sr5 Toyota truck for 16 years. At 10,000 miles/year I put on the yaris I expect to keep it 20 years.

I think I'll keep the Yaris until I'll have enough money saved to start thinking about the next toy. I don't like car payments, so I'm more about delayed gratification in this respect. Save money first, buy car after

For now, that's not looking too good, so I think I'll be driving the Yaris for at least 5 more years

If the car means that much to you wouldnt it be doing the car justice to have it repaired by a competant mechanic rather than rust away from negloect sitting in your driveway? look at the cost as a couple of belated car payments..

Wow, I think I'll get there well before you, at about 36,000 miles/year (damn commute!!!).

In my case, it would depend on when we decide to start having kids. Then again, that's what we have his brand new car for (bought a week before mine, and has less than 6000 miles on it, whereas mine is approaching 14,000). If I'm carting the kids around much, I'd probably have to trade in my '09 3dr for a 5dr model at least (not interested in the sedan at all). Too much of a hassle to to get into the backseat.

But after having had seat heaters installed on the front seats yesterday, and the anticipated power sunroof after I get my tax return, we may keep the car till it dies (or at least 5-7 years anyway).

Yea don't remind me :frown:

It was one of those things my wife ended up pushing me towards. She's like either FIX this one and it may not fix the issue (and be out the 800 dollars or so) or put that towards a new car.

I plan on fixing it, but it's gonna have to sit this winter. I have no choice.

My original plan in early 2007 was to just get something fuel efficient, reliable and cheap, which would hold me over until the Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles (PHEV) and Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV, or just EV) came out for the 2010 model year, like Toyota and others said they would do.

It's now 2010 and we have no PHEVs or BEVs from the mainstream manufacturers. Now they say 2012, which I won't hold my breath for.

This may be a good thing, though, as our idea of personal finance and our role within the economy has changed since then. We no longer buy things on credit, which means we'll need to save up cash for our next vehicle. We'll be debt free (sans mortgage, which we consider a living expense) in July of this year, and then will close out a few of the cheaper items on our personal wish lists, and expand our savings beyond the emergency fund we now have. This means that the soonest we'd have the cash to buy an EV will be 2013, so we're not in so much of a hurry anymore.

Once that happens my wife and I will have to decide which of our two paid-for vehicles to sell off: the 1996 Tacoma 4x4 which she's had since before we met, or my 2007 Yaris. It will be a tough decision as she doesn't drive much and the insurance cost is the same. I'm no fan of trucks but she still loves it, so there will be a strong emotional component to the final decision.

you dont have to drop the bottom end to pull the pump out. just take the front case cover off and the timing belt. i had to rebuild my engine like 3 times.(long story each time) the 4g63T is a pretty simple motor to figure out and tear down.

If I'm carting the kids around much, I'd probably have to trade in my '09 3dr for a 5dr model at least (not interested in the sedan at all). Too much of a hassle to to get into the backseat.

I've been carting my baby around for the past 11 months and I don't think it's more of a hassle for me to get him in the back of the Yaris, as opposed to my wife's 4-door Scion xD.

On the pro side: no need to worry about door locks and window locks, since they can't do any of that in a 3-door car from the back. The door opening is much bigger on a 3-door car than any of the doors on a 4-door car, so I found it actually easier to get the baby car seat in and out of the car on mine.

Sometimes, depending on who's has been sitting on the passenger seat on the xD I will have to slide the seat forward as well, for the baby seat to fit in.

The only hassle that I have is caused by the fact that I park the car on the right side of the garage, so I can't get him in and out on the right, since I'm too close to the wall. So I have to stop the car outside and do the loading and unloading. My wife has easy access to the baby, but she has to squeeze in and out of her car because of the proximity to the left wall

I love my 3-door: less weight, less moving parts, less things that can break and so on

My 2007 LB has 76,000 miles on it. It has been trouble free thus far, and I'm expecting at least 250,000 miles before reliability slides to the point of needing to get rid of it.

I plan to retire at age 55 (5 more years to go), so I am pinching my pennys, paying down the mortgages on my rentals, and doing all I can to keep my monthly expenses extremely low. I've got a 3 year emergency fund, and at the rate I'm paying down my mortgages, I should have them all paid down by 2015.

In other words, I need to keep the paid-for Yaris around for at least 5 more years so that I can secure my retirement and have $$ for travel, photography, and trips all over the world.

For this reason I live on about 20% of my income; cranking up the savings and cranking down the mortgages....life is too short to destroy one's future by continually buying cool, awesome, fantastic, fast, hot sheet cars every 3-5 years (or more frequently).

That's a tough question.
When I bought it, I was driving 400 miles a week. The high mpg of the Yaris makes a big difference on the wallet. Now that I'm working out of a home office, I haven't put 300 miles on it since the week before Thanksgiving. I really don't need a high mpg ricer. That being said, I'm more of Jeep kind of guy and if Chrysler would ever get off its ass and build a diesel truck then I would probably trade the Yaris in on something like that.

SilverGlow: That sounds awesome. Best of wishes to your early retirement!

I'll be keeping mine until we start getting good microcars in the US. Will probably trade for an iQ if the US model isn't completely butchered as it appears to be destined to be. I paid for this car in a single payment, so I'll be saving up until I can truly afford another car with no lease or future debts. I'll probably keep the ol' boy around anyway, it will be my "big car" for lugging family and things

I tend to only keep my cars for 3 or 4 years, but I think this one may be with me quite a bit longer. First off, I really love it. But more importantly, one of the main reasons I bought it was because it is such a simple car, and most of the newer cars on the market are much more complex and have lots of "stuff" on them that I'm not interested in having.

We'll see...

Can't speak for others, but I don't drive cars b/c they're cool or fancy or whatever. I'm 47 years old and have always had plain, simple cars. I don't think that's gonna change at this point. Well said.

I've never owned a luxury car but I've learned throughout my life that I don't even like simpler luxuries like power locks. Every little trinket that can be added onto a vehicle can fail easily, is expensive to repair and adds to the initial cost of the vehicle considerably.

Even though I've not owned a luxury vehicle I know plenty of people that have, and I'm not impressed. An associate of mine has a Porsche Cayenne turbo which spends 3 days a month in the shop. That's 10% of its life!

Touch screen display issues, heated seats not working, power locks no longer engage... these are prime examples of fluff items failing, causing a trip to a shop even though not one of them has anything to do with the car starting up and driving down the road.

Life has enough drama without creating more for ourselves, and there are much more important and lasting things to do with my money.

You have NO idea how hard it was to FIND even a Yaris w/out power windows/doors! OMG! There were a grand total of 2 5-speeds w/out the power package w/in 600 miles of me (and I'm near a large city). Esp since the whole point of this car is simple and inexpensive, that really surprised me.

I've had 2 vehicles w/ power stuff -- my 1988 Ford Bronco farm truck, which locks me out on a regular basis all by itself, including when it's TURNED OFF. :iono: And the Mitsubishi Expo POS that I got almost new and that had electrical problems its whole short life.

I have hands. I can roll windows up and down and press door locks all by myself! :headbang:

A car is a tool. It serves a purpose. I've leased cars for the past 10 years.

Next year the lease on my Tucson is done. It will be cheaper to pay the residual than to put a down payment on a new one. The year after that, it's my Yaris' time. Same deal.

After that, I'll keep both until it is no longer economically feasible to do so.

The Tucson is great for carrying stuff, or the family with luggage.

The Yaris does everything else. If I drop the back seat, I can get all my goalie gear in there.

I've owned for status, I've owned for looks, now I reached that autrity level where I own for functionality.

And a 3rd type: those that got tired of spending big $$ on expensive luxury cars, high performance/sporty cars and loaded convertibles, thinking I needed a new one every year or two. Too much wasted on big monthly payments and insurance so I decided to get a 3-door Yaris w/o power options; actually my favorite car of all I've owned.

I'm wanting to sell mine for a brand new one, but I will still keep it. I am going to sell it and pay cash for the difference. I think I'm going to do that in 2012 so I can get a couple more years out of her. If the resell is just super crappy and she's still fine, I am going to just keep her. I REALLY want a LB though, which is the only reason I want to trade in for a new one ...

I love these damn cars.

Funny how i made fun of my coworker of owning one and despised every little thing on this car...and now, i had bought one and love every little thing on it~

I thought the LB was the ugliest thing on the road ....... until I bought my sedan and now I get jealous of everyone who has a LB because I want one  It's funny how your opinion changes about cars after you start driving one in the family huh?

Until such time as you were ever so slightly rear-ended and your car blew you to pieces... Design flaw on this one, having the gas tank too close to the rear without reinforcing anything...

I think I'd pass on any Pinto, but that's me...

lol you people are funny. The Yaris does its mission perfectly, and frankly it won't be worth trading in for something else. might as well always have a reliable car that can get 40 mpg so you can get a toy to play with or break and not have to worry.

Here, once again in an Internet forum, we have someone who inserts herself into a thread half-cocked. For your edification, the idea was that I would keep a car that ran good and was in good shape overall. It wasn't a promotion for the Ford Pinto or any other specific car.

The idea came from my post where i questioned the idea of keeping theYaris for life or a very long time,i was just trying to understand why some one would want to keep driving a tired old out of date economy car for 30+yrs,I used the Pinto as an example and i think Devil girl was just responding to my example of the Ford Pinto as the 30+ year old economy car and some of the unforeseen problems that can arise over time...

I think I'll keep the Yaris until I'll have enough money saved to start thinking about the next toy. I don't like car payments, so I'm more about delayed gratification in this respect. Save money first, buy car after

For now, that's not looking too good, so I think I'll be driving the Yaris for at least 5 more years
Must be a Dave Ramsey fan. I plan on running my Yaris at least 200k.

I had a '72 Pinto, never worried about being rear ended 'cause I seldom if ever used the brakes. Drove a Pinto wagon for a while as supervisor for a maintenance company. The only complaint with it was the boss telling me that every time he saw me on the road I was flying too close to the ground.

Probably for a long time. My wife is a real cheapskate. I just bought a 2008 Yaris sedan with 7200 miles. Sprung for the 7 year, 100,000 mile warranty. So, barring anything unforseen, we'll keep it for at least seven years, hopefully longer. It should remain large enough for out needs. Air Conditioning, heater and a radio, good enough for me, so long as it remains reliable.

Not necessarily. There are many factors to consider. Particularly terrain, fuel being dispensed at the gas stations (winter vs summer blends), ambient temperatures, all city vs mixed or all highway driving.

Besides the fact that 35mpg is still a hell of a lot better than most of the other cars out there. While 40+ would be better, can't really complain about 35 when others are barely making 30.

Movie stuff, cars don't blow up that easily, they're more prone to catch on fire. Even that doesn't happen often ... without some effort ;) I thought they recalled Pintos with that problem anyway?

We had a Pinto in the family for 15 years, and you know it was the most reliable car of the lot ... of course it didn't blow up or catch on fire once. But unibody frames don't rust very well ...

That said, who cares ... I ride a motorcycle most of the time anyway. I'm pretty sure I'd rather be rearended in a pinto than on that sportster. But it's just crazy, I guess I like to live life that way ...

Ive REALLY enjoyed the Yaris experience and if Toyota ever sold it to another manufacturer I might return one day.

For those that plan on keeping their Yaris for 10-20 years dont you think the possibility exists that in that time you might get bored with the little economy car and want to move on to something else?

Not a chance. In fact, I'm very sad that I'll have to leave my old corolla behind soon. If the original owner hadn't let the rust get so bad I'd be willing to invest a lot more more to keep it going as long as possible. Hope to love my next car just as much. (and not let it start rusting!)

Well, I will break even at 140,000 miles. The gas savings from going to 40 MPG from 18 MPG means the car paid for it's self and anything over 140,000 miles is money in the bank. My truck was a 1995 and had 264,000 miles when I sold it. I expect the same life out of the Yaris.

haha... I just did this... I drove a 12mpg chevy when I first got back from japan, but it was a loaner from the grandparents... The last car I owned before the yaris was my 97 Mazda 626 which got 27-28mpg consistently (upwards of 30mpg highway).

Figuring in the cost of my yaris, minus the price I got for the mazda before I went to japan, and gas at $3 a gallon, and my life long avg for MPG's on the yaris being 40mpg.... it'd take me 574,000 miles to break even. That doesn't consider maintenance costs tho... and the Yaris has the mazda beat by a long shot there... so i'd guess it'd be more like 300,000 miles.

Before my mazda I owned a 86 Jeep Cherokee.... thing got 15-18mpg.

I guess the yaris has saved me more money too... if I was still driving the mazda... its possible I might have chosen to fly once or twice more on trips.... which would've bumped up travel costs to home from $60 up to $200. It really is hard to justify flying home when the trip is either 8hrs by car, or 2hrs by car+1hr by plane (plus the waiting around time) and three times the cost.... or four times the cost & 1.5hrs by plane.

There's a lot to like about my Yaris 3 door HB. Very comfortable seating which is critical for my back - had back surgery 20 years ago & don't like seat too low to the ground. Very peppy engine, didn't expect that. Wow, need to keep an eye on speed to stay ticket free. Great mpg! More interior room than my last car. Hope to keep it 10 years or more. I only average 6,300 miles/year on my car. So in 10 years I'ld still have under 70,000 miles. Hope it doesn't develop rust in Michigan's winters with the road salt.

All true. after 3 years with my Yaris I feel like a stool pigeon in the seat. My Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 is so much more comfortable and like a tank in the rain.
I bought the Yaris for the MPG'S and I love being able to drive everywhere and get 40 mpg VS my truck's 12 mpg. I would advise against trading it though because you will lose so much money. The Yaris will grow on you after awhile. I have 92K on mine. I plan to drive till just before it dies and it will end it's life as a stock car in the "beater" 4 cylinder class at the local track

Fiat is supposed to bring it's Panda to the US in the next year or so. It may be in the form of a tiny Jeep called the Phoenix. It is a hybrid that gets 59 mpg! It will come as a 4x4 and can perform reasonably well off road. With the rear seats folded down there's enough room to cary a clothes washer. Fiat has come a long way over the years and makes super reliable cars like the Panda (Phoenix). Anything that's a bit bigger with a smoother ride, gets comparable or better fuel economy and is a lift back. The Prius lift back comes down too low in the rear for my needs and the XB's fuel milage is too poor. For now I have the Yaris for daily driving needs and a '51 Nash when I need a little smooth ride therapy.
