View Full Version : New tires for YARIS
Guys,
I have driven 40 K miles on my Yaris now ..yay..and took it to a toyota dealer for periodical service...the service adviser recommended all 4 tire changes as the threading has gone 3/32 in all the tires. He offered to put bridgestone tires -15 - and gave an estimate of $ 780 including alignment...am so wary of the estimated charges ,hence am asking you for your opinion. Is it worth the money or whats the best place /price to change tires ?
thanks

Welcome!
Don't ever trust a dealer's word. Best way to find out is to stick a quarter in your tread with Washington's head going in first. If goes as deep as his hairline you're fine.
You're Bridgestones lasted longer than mine, so yeah they do suck lol. If you're just looking for standard replacements you could try Goodyear Eagle LS, as they replace the Bridgestones as of last year's model. Try http://discounttiredirect.com for better deals.

Jeezus, $780??? I got a complete set of wheels, that is rims, tires, alignment and install for $1,000. $780 is rip-off for tires only. Even $500 is too much...
Any tire shop can do it, Big O Tires, Firestone, American Tires, you name it. Pepboys, etc.

I had a set of Michelin Harmonies, great tires, lasted over 100,000 miles! They are expensive thought... I went with Yokohama this time, like them too. Paid $360.00 for the set of 4 with lifetime rotation and balance.

Stay away from the Eagle LS. These tires are downright scary.
Oddly they're okay in the wet but offer zero dry road traction and don't even look at snow. I've never heard the ABS rattle so often as with these banana peels.

Check TIRERACK.COM
I got my 18's for my TRD wheels for $64.00 each delivered to my door.
They probably have every tire made so pick what YOU want.

Got Yokohama as replacements for my 07 from Tirerack.com for $52. I live within an hour of their Shreveport warehouse so I went and picked them up to save the $40 shipping. I then took them to Wal-Mart and had them installed for about $50 with free lifetime rotation and balance. So ended up being about $250. I have 10,000 miles on these tires and they are still in perfect condition.
I got Coopers as replacements on my 08 from Pepboys. They were $60 a piece and the 4th tire was free. Install was about $70 so it ended up being about $250 as well. I have about 5000 miles on these and they are also still in great condition.

COOPER CS-4s are are very good all weather tire at a reasonable price . Stay away from the BRIDGESTONE . Not worth a cr*p on rain soaked roads .

second the yokohamas! i just bought a set of yoko avid trz in the same size as factory from discount tire and spent around $320 installed with the lifetime rotation and balance. they got MUCH better reviews online than the oem goodyears and so far so good. they're not a 'performance' tire by any means, but they have terrific treadlife, all-season capability(i live in the midwest), and quality name. i've also heard nothing but good things about the michelin harmonies and if you don't mind paying the extra coin(still less than the dealership tires you were quoted) they're not a bad choice.

$780!!???
You should have laughed in his face. For $780, you can get a good set of wheels AND tires mounted and balanced and shipped from TireRack or Discount tire. Even upsizing to 16" you can stay in that price area.

COOPER now making a fuel saving tire w/o sacrificing traction . The GFC . www.coopertire.com/gfe/product-information.html . Price is around $60 a tire . Thing is they make a 175/65R14 ( T-rated ) for those YARIS owners with the 14s' , but only have 185/65R15 ( T-rated ) . The 15's for YARIS are 185/60R15s' . Could the 185/65s be used in place of the 60s' ?

People, please note that the $780 also includes an alingment.
However the price is still way too high.
List for top line tires @ $125x4 = $500
+$10 per tire for balancing etc =$40
Alingement (assuming you actually need it) about $80
Even at inflated dealer prices it should only come to about $620
BTW whenever a dealer gives you a price for work, get an itemized list describing exactly the cost of each item and all individual labor charges for each item.
They usually sing a slightly different tune when all the cards are on the table and they can no longer hide from a blatent rip off.

Dont get yokohama avid touring s. I got those cheap at tirerack and they REALLY SUCK. When I put the winter snows in the front the car handled 100% better with firestone winterforce SNOWS. try discounttiredirect they usually have free shipping. On my Zuki aerio I had FALKEN ZEIX and they were very good and around 50 buck ea for +1 50 series. Also put pirelli p4 on the rav4 and that made a day and noght transformation; bettr ride handling and wear like titanium. The p4 are cool but look like cheap

The Goodyear LS and the RS is awful, I've owned both. Both had to be replaced at 35 to 40 thousand miles. Road noise was also horrible with these tires.
I then tried the Yokohama TRZ, big improvement. Road noise was down alot. And so far they still look great with 38,000 miles on them. The tire size is 185/60R15 on my Tracer. My Yaris currently has only 200 miles on it, its tires are still OK.
Anyway, my 10-cents worth on Goodyears
Figure it this way--
$125 x 4 tires = $500
Labor for mounting and ballancing (1.4 hours) $140
Wheel weights, tires tax, disposal $20
Alighnment $100
$760 + tax
Labor at a dealership is always higher. Try to negotiate on the tire price. Bring a quote from somewhere else to see if they will match it.

The first mistake is paying $125 a tire for the Yaris.
You can get a great high rated 80K tire for $60-$70 each.
$140 to mount and balance? Most shops will do it for under $60.
DiscountTire and Tirerack does it FREE with wheel purchase.
Alignments' about right but many shops will do it for $80.

Exactly. nobody charges $140 to mount and balance tires. Shit...I can't count the number of times Town Fair Tire has done it for nothing even If I didn't purchase the tires or wheels there!!!!
No reason you can't get a good set of tires for $350 or so and have the whole changeover done, with alignment, for around $450 OTD. $780 is beyond laughable!

sorry to bump an old thread, but I just put new tires on my 07 yaris sedan and only the 185/65r15s were in stock. I went with these and according to gps, my speedometer is dead on??? I guess it was way off with the original size?
btw, I bought the cheapest tire at discount tire....gt radial champiro vp1 @ $44 each, $265 otd. they are made in china, but had good reviews. I love the new tires so far, very smooth and quiet.

That's the same difference between OE size and 195/60R15. 3% is within spec so yeah... You should be good. But you are sitting almost half an inch higher now than with OE size.

Very decent commuter tyres at a great price! Yes, they have good reviews... and you'll find that the tread pattern provides straight line tracking at highway speeds. (The Yaris speedo isn't accurate out of the box).
I had the misfortune to run over a nail spill a couple of weeks ago & managed to acquire 10 nails in one of the original Goodyear tires so I decided that I might as well buy a new set of tires.
I picked up a set of Uniroyal Tiger Paw A/S65 tires and I have no complaints especially when driving on wet roads.....as a matter of fact I would say that these tires are outstanding when driving in the rain.
