TRD Clutch put in: Break-in noise?

I just had my TRD clutch, new flywheel, and throwout bearing installed.

I started off in 1st gear, and I could here an odd squeaking/squawking sounds. I went and had lunch, then took it back to the dealership. (I figured it was a throw-out bearing).

The tech told me the TRD clutch has 8 "fingers" on the case, whereas the stock clutch has 12, and that there might be a bit of noise until it breaks in. He said give it 100 miles, and the noise should go away.

Is there any break-in period for a clutch? Is this noise attributed to what he said?

I've never had noise with a new clutch, but I've only done three aftermarket clutches total. So I don't know if that's correct information or not.

hm...what causes the noise exactly, clutch in, clutch out, engaging...?

I have no idea. Think he was possibly referring to the new material on new material. (e.g. disc to flywheel?)

I meant when you're driving, what action causes the noise, but it sounds like when you're engaging the clutch it makes the noise? I can see it being an initial thing for the clutch and the flywheel to mate, but still...Keep an eye/ear on it

Yeah, when you first engage it, it seems to make the noise. It's most noticeable at low speeds, too. I've only put about 10-15 miles on it, so I'll need to give it some time, I suppose.

There will be a breakin period for any clutch it's most likely just the two materials wearing in just give it some time it should get better if not take it back

There is a brake in period just like you have a brake in period for brakes the brake friction material has to break in aka bed into the fresh brake rotor. Friction material has to bed/impregnate into the fresh metal surface.

Clutch system is simular you have the flywheel which is like a large brake rotor and the clutch friction material has to bed into the fresh resurfaced flywheel.

Also i know performance oriented brake pads tend to give some sound compared to factory stock pads so if you transfer the same theory the difference friction material could be culprit as well.

This is all theory though i have never owned a car that had one or isntalled a performance clutch before.

I'll be curious to hear back on this subject. I, personally, have never run into a "break-in" noise regarding a new clutch. Please keep us posted...

About 250 miles on the new clutch, and the noise seems to have gone away ... amazingly. Clutch feels good, grabs harder than stock. Pedal is also heavier than stock. So far, so good!

The stage 2 clutch i had on my s2k made some noise out the gate. The manufacturer recommended a 750 mile break-in... I'm an enginerd, so I doubled it to 1500... anyway, I had it for a couple weeks before the noise went away. It was also a 10.75lb flywheel vs my stock 22lb, so I got more drivetrain noise too.

I have run "bronze" clutches before in previous cars and they make noise on engaement. Good to know they noise went away
