I hope/wish everyone does this pledge, it's becoming a big problem, texting and along with talking on cell phones while driving. You are taking your chances of killing someone, along with killing yourself. Don't attempt fate, texting can wait! So please hang up and drive, your life is more important!
So please take the pledge!

If you can't talk and drive at the same time then you shouldn't be behind the wheel to begin with. I can see avoiding texting but let's not go too far.

laff, I don't even know how to attempt fate or what that means
I'm with bailout. I can talk on the phone and drive better than 95% of the people out there no matter how hard they try. I can text with one hand without looking.
Just take away people's licenses for 5 years for their first at fault accident - all problems solved.

In Germany its illegal for a while to use your phone while driving. There is only one exception. If your car has a hands-free phone system its ok. I got my Yaris with this system (bluetooth) and steering wheel switches from factory.

Here's a list of countries that ban cell phone use while driving. Don't know how up-to-date it is. It's about time US got on that list!
http://www.cellular-news.com/car_bans/
Other than the fact that you're driving around with a hand on your face, how is driving while on my cell phone any different to driving around with a passenger and you know, talking?
That being said, I heartedly agree with bailout. Driving and talking on my cell shouldn't be that much harder than walking and chewing gum at the same time. Dumb-ass girls that don't even realize they're cutting everyone off on the highway because they're too busy texting about how last night's party was so kewl should have their licenses taken until they pass an IQ test.

You should always have two free hands for steering the car. In an emergency situation the second you will need to put down the cell phone could be the one who is missing later to avoid an accident. So you should not use the phone, eat, drink whatsoever while driving. Just my opinion.

Agreed. In Taiwan, we can't cell, eat, drink, or smoke in the car... and for very good reason as noted above.
i use a bluetooth set because i'm a courier and i'm constantly getting calls while out on the road. i have time-committments that have to be met and i can't be late or we're charged. personally, i feel that as long as both my hands are available to drive(it's a 5spd) and i'm not looking at maps or gps(which i do pull-over to do) and not eating(which i see all the time and imho way worse than talking on the phone) i'm fine and still a better driver than most(accident-free for 10+ years). in my state they are making it illegal for teens to talk on their cells or text, but i think that's just because they are more inexperienced drivers. they will never take it away for adults in this country, however, because it's become a part of our lives and nobody will stand for it! agree with that statement or not - it's the truth.

I'm against almost any limitation on personal rights, but this one is easy for me to agree with, even though I think I can use my phone safely on the road. I have NO problem using a handsfree system and a voice-dial feature. Its actually really easy and there is no arguing the statistics on driving while distracted.
I even saw a bluetooth headset recently that claims it can do voice-to-text messaging. Not sure if it works well, but the technology is out there.
When I drive my wife's Accord w/ built-in bluetooth speaker and microphone, I find it really is less stressful and easier to relax while I drive.
After visiting my brother in CA, I realized how often I was using the phone when I really didn't need to, or could have waited to get to a light or stop sign, then dial and put it on speakerphone. This is a good law.

as long as you can still have sex in the car, and/or read the paper, I guess that's OK. Just pull over to smoke your cigarette afterwards

Texting is really bad. So are applying makeup and fixing hair using the rear view mirror, reading newspapers or books, rummaging in purses, lighting smokes, and lots of other distracting things people do while driving.

You guys want nicotine fiends on the road without their fix?

and for all you holier than thou bluetooth users:

If you are using a hands-free device with a cell phone, you are four and half times more likely to be in a serious accident than if you are not talking on the phone at all.

As already mentioned, that's likely just as true of drivers talking to someone in the car. Which is a reason that new drivers are limited as to the passengers they can carry in most places. Get a car full of teenagers yakking, and they'll probably drive into something.
In case nobody read the link I posted above, it's to a study showing that accidents haven't gone down anywhere laws against cell phone use have been put in place.

Talking on a headset is no different from talking to someone else in the car.

in quebec we already have the interdiction of having a cellphone in our hands while in a moving vehicle, except cops dont enforece it and are actually braking the law themselves , i see cops regularly on their cell phones while driving. they say they can cause its for the job , but im sorry you have a state of the art cb system in your cruiser you're not gonna tell me they have to be on a cell phone
Our cops use cell phones too because the police/emergency radio network is quite old here. It can be easily observed by anyone. They use cell phones for more sensitive informations. We are just inventing a new network called TETRA which is more safe. Dont know how its in Canada.

there ya go -- why all the focus on just the phone conversations? eating and drinking are often ignored in this conversation.

Actually, that is not entirely correct. According to studies, even hands-free phone use means you are visualizing while talking, which takes away some attention from what is actually happening around you.

You are right but what is your conclusion? Using the phone should be allowed because other things are allowed too? Or other things should be disallowed too?

Thanks for the link, that's pretty interesting.
They are filming it Jim Russel's School (Sears Point), in Sonoma county  just a few miles away from here. That's where Paul Newman learned how to race.
I know the place, took some "driving lessons" there some years back for fun (with a go-kart), got some photos around here some place. Good times

I ocassionally text while driving... and what makes me more stupid is... I'm using a touch-screen phone...
I know, gotta stop that habit...
More laws that we don't need. great... Why don't we just ban being alive at all, because that is where this bs is heading too.
If people do dumb things, let them pay the consequences of it. Let's not make a law for every dumb thing people do, its just rediculous. Take personal responsibility for yourselves and smack your family around to do it as well. If everyone did that, there wouldn't be a problem.
You cannot legislate common sense, so stop trying.
