Sorry, I have no idea, my car didn't come with a cigarette lighter.

There are two parts to it. You have to release the outer ring from behind by squeezing the two tabs, and then it will slide out towards you.

how to get behind though? I need to get it out too so I can solder a 3 port one to it with a 500mA USB as well, for charging new type cell phones.

Pull off the two vertical trim pieces and then you can pull off the A/C controls to get to the back of the outlet.

Hello,
Sorry to bring up this old thread but I am struggling with the same thing!
I googled some pics of the cigarette lighter to see if i might see where the tabs are but could not.
Here are some pics of the lighter in my car. Does the silver part need to come out first (the lighter assembly) or does the entire socket come out i.e. including the black surround?
Thanks!

I have a spare lower dash, so I just tried it myself to refresh my memory.
You have to first slide the metal part out of the black part.
To do so (from your pictures):
Release the plastic tabs that hold the metal part to the plastic part by pushing out on the tabs from inside of the lighter, which pushing the metal part from behind the dash. The metal part will then slide out.

Once the metal part is removed you can easily squeeze the tabs on the back side of the plastic part and slide it out as well:

Hi CTScott,
Thanks once again! I will try this next week once my 3.5mm & USB adapter arrives (pictured below). I think it should fit right in and look neater.

I like that. One of my USB adapters always pops out just enough that my phone doesn't get charged.

Just wanted to say thanks for your excellent advice. I managed to get it out...only to realise that I actually do need the lighter when using the tyre inflator!
So put it back in and then thought I'd mount the aux and usb ports flush in the glovebox. Drilled a hole, filed away and got it in there, only to realise there was not enough clearance when closing it!
So I ended up using the little holder to mount it on the inside of the glovebox - I would have preferred to flush mount it but wasn't going to make another hole in the thing. I believe there is more clearance on the left-hand side (where all the fuses are on the RHD cars anyway) and should have checked that to begin with...
I suppose you learn as you go along!

I was just trying to remove mine and discovered the mysterious "OT-9" link in the instrument panel section of the repair manual. I tried pinching the external tabs without success and then went in search of the missing section online. Apparently it doesn't exist!
Big thanks to CT once again!

by any chance does anyone know how to remove the cigarette lighter from the 2012 yaris? Its slightly different. I was able to remove all the panels and access the back. I'm able to disconnect the power from the lighter but i have no idea how to remove the socket out.

Hi CTScott,
I have a Toyota Yaris 2008 Hatchback that looks exactly like the one in the attached Image1.jpg. In order to reach the cigarette lighter and check why it is not working, I removed the left and right trims as you suggested. Then I tried to remove the A/C panel with its contols. The lower part of the AC panel seems easy to remove from its clips but the upper part is not moving outwards by applying normal force. It gives me the impression that I also have to remove the radio receiver. Am I right?
If the A/C panel cannot be removed by applying more force to the upper part, is it possible to remove just the front part of the radio receiver without removing the 4 bolts that fix the radio receiver?
Thanks in advance!

you will have to remove the upper center panel to remove the lower panel. considering you have an integrated stereo, you will really have to remove the 4 bolts.

thanks! I will do it this way.

you're welcome. good luck.
addendum: reason why i mentioned integrated stereo is that if you have a panel (2-din stereo panel from Scosche, etc.) and a stereo (of course), the stereo bolts on to the bracket with 4 bolts but the panel itself is attached via the 4 clips only--which allows you to take the panel off without unscrewing the 4 bolts.
