I picked up my Yaris last weekend, and I'm just noticing now that the "Airbag" indicator on the center console (just below the hazard flasher button) is always on, whether or not anyone is sitting in the passenger seat.

This indicator is part of the "occupant sensing system" and actually consists of 3 indicator lights. There is the light for the word "AIRBAG", and seperate indicators for the words "ON" and "OFF". When I turn the key to the ACC position, all 3 of these lights come on for the expected 4 seconds, then the "ON" and "OFF" indicators go out. But the "AIRBAG" indicator is always lit.

In the owners manual, there is a table of possible states for these indicators to be in, and having just the "AIRBAG" light lit doesn't fall into one of the "expected" states. I'm just trying to figure out if this is a problem with the system/indicator, or just a mistake in their table. Maybe this is specific to cars with side airbags. Does anyone else's "AIRBAG" light stay lit under normal operation?

I'm getting ready to swap out the head unit, and if there's an issue with this indicator, I want Toyota to look at it before I tear the dash apart, lest they blame my ham-handedness for the problem.

Note that I'm not talking about the SRS light in the dash cluster, I'm talking aobut the one right below the hazard flasher button.

Do you have a book or something on your seat?

mine stayes on always, but i have never noticed an "off" light by it...just says airbag, and then when someone largeenough is sitting in the passenger seat, it will say "airbag on"

actually as i type this i just thought of something. the off is mostlikley only going to be lit when a small person is sitting in the seat, and to let you know that the air bag is not going to deploy.
or posibly if you can override the airbags to the off position where they will never be activated, then maybe the off will be lit.

but i dont belive there is anything wrong with it always being lit in the "airbag" position posibly the chart is assuming that the light will always be on, and then it gives you posible combinations that could be lit with it.

Jonnyfive, thanks for the reply! I just wanted to verify that at least one other person has this behavior with their "AIRBAG" indicator.

the "AIRBAG" will always stay lit.

airbag OFF lights up when there's a passenger and the seat belt is not fastened (typo? sorry for my "bag" english). try it.
