Is the toyota the best gas mileage getter, for the price? I am talking non-hybrid, gasoline motor cars. You have the Smart, but I think the yaris actually does better than the smart on mileage, doesn't it? How well does the yaris stack up against the honda fit, in terms of mileage?

Yes. The Smart has better mileage. The Yaris is slightly better.

i could have sworn i read something a year or two ago that the smart was rated worse than the yaris for gas mileage... i could be horribly wrong though, it was a few years ago

The Smart's a little better according to the EPA. 33/41 city and highway. The Yaris is 29/35 with automatic, 29/36 5 speed. The Smart used to require premium gasoline. Apparently it no longer does. To be as small as it is, it's not much better on the mileage. The U.S. government lists the Yaris as the most fuel-efficient subcompact here:

chevy cobalt xfe rated 25/37. more expensive i think (but ive seen it sold for as little as $13,800), and outside of pure highway i dont think it is going to beat the yaris.

One more antidote

The combined MPG is better in the Yaris (manual transmission) vs Cobalt XFE (manual transmission)

2010 Yaris 29 city 36 highway 32 combined

2010 Cobalt 25 city 37 highway 30 combined

I have an 09 3dr liftback, girlfriend has an 09 Fit sport. I get two to three mpg more than she does, both do about the same mileage per week, combined city and highway. Fit is geared a little lower and has more horsepower. Runs 3000 to 3100 rpms at 65 mph. Yaris runs 2800 or so at 65 mph.

Nah. Massachussetts didn't get hit that hard. It stayed mostly south, and spared New England. I'd say from Philly to DC is the area that got hit the most.

If you say the best gas mileage car with style, it's the yaris! :)

I found the Yaris to be the best for user rated mileage. A couple of others had higher EPA ratings, but according to fueleconomy.gov more Yaris drivers seem to be hitting EPA and up to 20% higher.

Also watch out for comparisons against the Smart or Mini, as they are supposed to be run on higher octane fuel than the Yaris and the cost difference at the pump essentially removes any benefit from the slightly higher EPA rating.

Yaris also has the advantage in ongoing maintenance and repair costs.

By the EPA numbers, the Yaris falls just under the Smart Fourtwo, however, real world numbers from actual owners of Smarts are showing that the Yaris typically beats the Smart sometimes by as much as 10MPG more in daily driving. Smarts typically hover in the 30's and the Yaris often runs in the 40's. Smarts are 3 cylinders and have to work a little harder to keep up with traffic and run accessories than the 4 cylinder Yaris. But it really all comes down to how you drive it to get the best MPG.

I wouldn't go that far. That's not what I hear, from around here. The general consensus from what I have read seems to be about 1 or 2 mpg more for the manual.

EPA says 1 MPG. A reason users might report more difference than that is that buyers who are highly concerned about mileage are more likely to buy the manual. Selection bias. Those drivers are more likely to "hypermile" than auto drivers.
