Metal scratching from brakes

I had the problem for a year now and i cant figure it out.

When i apply brake hard on slippery and snowy roads at low speed 30's my brakes make a sound like
taking a metal bar and scratching the surface of
the stone with it, and when it makes the sound it also
pulsates goes up and down up and down, like something missing , and they also feel soft .
Because on my dads accord the brakes feel like brakes, stable.

The car is one year old 09 stock with 9K on it no mods.
Is it the ABS kicking in? no light on dash,no steering wheel sound.
Pads could be worn? at 9K miles? could it be so fast?

I looked it up in some forums people describe the same problem but no solution and the dealers say its because the brakes are cold.

I still have warranty should i just go to the dealer and ask them about it ,
i am sure the brakes are fine but i don't like driving with unstable brakes.

That's the ABS activating. The light on the dash only comes on at startup or when the ABS quits working.

some cars have no sound at all , or just a "bip" sound.

That's how it sounds when the brakes are very rapidly being applied and released by the computer controller. The frequency of the brake pressure pulsation is what makes that disagreeable juddering sound. I've not heard any that were silent or just made a "bip" sound when activated. Can't imagine how that would work. You won't hear this happening unless the road is slick enough for the wheels to start to lock when you brake hard. There is in many cars a barely noticeable little "bip" sound when the ABS system self-tests as you first start rolling after startup.

For the most part it sounds like the ABS system kicking in, as for the metal scraping sound check to see that the front brake rotor dust shield isn't rubbing against the brake rotor. This may not be your problem but it sounds you've had this problem since day one, good luck and keep us informed.

That metal scraping sound had me wondering if a brake pad had fallen off:biggrin: then i learned about ABS and its related feel and sound,i also hate ABS..

That my friend is chatter caused by slipping of the brakes.....It can also cause a pulsating/vibration in the brakes as well. Its not good at all, but alot of ABS systems do that, try switching out your pads :thumbup:. There are alot of options out there that reduce noise on rotors and prevent wear. The more COF they can withstand the better, but if its quiet you want go for some organic pads with the ABS system. They wear quick but are very quiet!

Yaris is an ABS addict, it always activate even just trying to park on uneven surface.

I have ABS on the 08 and no ABS on the 07 and there is no difference!!!!

You'ld know it in the snow. Car doesnt stop in freezing slush with ABS. I hate ABS unless its on a big truck.

The only situation where ABS lengthens stopping distance is where the road surface is very slick with snow, slush or mud that can pile up in front of locked wheels and stop the car faster than the friction of the tires on the slick surface alone would. You maintain ability to steer with the ABS keeping the wheels from locking, whereas with the wheels locked you're a helpless passenger and might as well shut your eyes while you're hoping you won't hit something. I'd rather have it. Yeah, I've known how to pump brakes in non-ABS cars for 40+ years, too. You're not giving up a significant benefit by not being able to lock your wheels.

I remember when our local police first got ABS and initially objected to it. One cop told the newspaper reporter "If I'm going to crash, I want to hear squalling rubber before the impact."

So happy I don't have it. Knowing how to drive is so much better than relying on computer nannies.

And it isn't about locking the tires, that really isn't a good thing to do in any situation. But I just hate electronic aids.

Since you car is still on the warranty, the dealer would be the best place to have it diagnosed. With all the troubles Toyota is having with safety issues, questionable brake performance is something they don't need.

I have abs on both the sedan and lb that its normal and never. Had a problem with it.
