weird thing was me changing my oil last weekend.. drain it for about 10 minutes..then only used 3 bottles and im already in between lines on that dip stick..i also let it sit on flat surface for 2 hours and measured it again im still between lines..each of them amsoil bottle is about 946 ml.. not even a liter.. which mean that im getting i free oil change on my case of motor oil...sweet!

Only takes about 3.5 quarts. Don't panic, just put in what you need to get the dipstick to read full.

Full oil change with new filter = 3.7 litres.

Difference between Low level and Full level on dipstick = 1.5 litres.

3 bottles = ~ halfway between low and full.

I'd top it up, not try to cheap out.

I've changed the oil on this car 7 times now and mine always takes 3.5 qts. dead on to read perfectly full with a filter change. Yes, put the other .5 qt in and save the remainder for the next change.

Only takes about 3.5 quarts.

my 09 owners manual reads, 3.9 qt w/filter change and 3.6 qt without filter change.

Be that as it may... with a genuine Toyota filter... my experience has been that it takes somewhere between 3.5 and 3.75 quarts. There will always be a little oil left in the engine somewhere after you drain it.

new TOYO oil filter usually soaks up about 4 ounces of new oil . Then pour 3 qts. and 14 ounces into motor . I'll pour about 8 ounes of new oil in beginning of oil change to flush some used oil out that's left in pan then put drain plug back in when there's a slow drip of oil (some patience needed :frown: ) . In the end it usually reads at or a tad above FULL mark .

i always thought that its better to keep it in between rather than full.. but then again i could be wrong..

For typical driving, being half a quart low isn't going to hurt anything, but there's nothing "better" about it. Bad habit to be in, really. If you're going to keep your car for many years, it will eventually start burning or leaking some oil. If you start off half a quart low, that's a half a quart less reserve capacity.

(my first car burned a quart of oil ever 200 miles, I learned to make sure the oil was FULL every time I checked it!)

On a similar topic - do any of you fill the filter before putting it on? I've read that it isn't necessary, but it's an old habit so I'm just curious.

I've done that on every car I've owned.

I don't bother to fill the filter-seems to only make the job more messy and my oil light goes out in a second anyway upon start up. I've read everything from pull the fuel relay and crank for so many seconds to filling the filter and then screwing it on. However, not all cars have a vertically mounted oil filter so that's out on a side mounted one. They don't do it if you have someone else change it so I'd don't give it much thought. It definitely does not hurt, I'm just not sure how much it helps considering the hassle and possible mess it could lead up to.

About filling the filter - I don't fill it up the whole filter, I just fill it enough to "wet" the new,dry filter. I think priming the filter with new before installing is always a good thing.

3.5 quarts was about right for me, too.

I don't pre-fill the filter. I put in between 3.6 and 3.9 quarts. As long as it's reading full you'll be fine.

same here, I only use 3 quarts of penzoil platinum. Oil cools the pistons and head - you need all 3.5 qts.

I fill the filter and also soak the gasket in oil before installing filter. Shops dont cause it takes too much time. I use a funnel and no mess.

By 'soak the gasket' do you mean rubbing a little oil on it or do you take it off and literally soak it?

the rubber seal of the TOYO oil filter is coated with what looks like vaseline  . So I don't put oil on the seal .
