Hey guys. So the other day I was reading around about regular maintenance and I realized I never had the PCV valve looked at.
I pulled off the hose and immediately noticed oil on the end of the tip. After taking the valve off, I noticed the inside pretty dark, which is normal. However, the metal sliding mechanism did not sound good. The replacement PCV I received from Toyota clicked rapidly if you shook it, while the old one clicked only once or twice, so it seemed pretty gunked up.
I'm sure those of you with an oil catch fair better, but I am at 160,000km without one so this was a good investment. The idle also seems to be better, not sure if it is placebo but I swear it's smooth as butter now and not jumping from 500-800rpm.
BTW it cost me $18 CAD at the dealer ... rip off and a half if you ask me, but I wanted a genuine part.

I replaced my 2002 Echo PCV Valve with a NAPA Echlin for $7.10. I consider NAPA Echlin to be at least as good as OE, if not better.

I just take mine out and clean it with carb cleaner every 20k miles or so to keep it running smooth and good. Might change it at 100k just as preventative maintanance.

Ya I think I will start cleaning it out when I change my air filter. It seemed pretty gunked up.

Where is the PCV located? Could anyone do a quick DIY on the location and the steps involved locating and removing?

take off the vvti cover on your engine. underneath that is the valve cover. on the drivers side of the valve cover there is a hose going into the back right corner that attaches to a fitting screwed into the valve cover. that fitting is the pcv valve. with the proper size wrench or maybe an adjustable you can remove it.

You need a 19mm deep socket to remove the PCV valve.
When I replaced mine I also put some anti-seize on the thread, since taking the original off took some force with breaker bar. Should make it easier the next time around.
Takes about 10 mins to replace.

I found and removed the PCV Valve and cleaned it, checked it, and replaced it! A lot easier than I thought. This Forum is the greatest.

Just replaced mine today, old one had a bit of buildup on it. Seems like the new valve threads in a bit easier than the factory one too, tightened it snug but not very tight. Not sure if you can hurt the valve or engine by trying to make it very tight.

Yeah actually I just ordered a replacement, that time of year again to replace it (cheap insurance).

How do you know the PCV valve may need replacing or cleaning? Does the engine idle or run a particular way? My engine idles rough and oscillates badly when either in drive or a/c on in drive; when in neutral, it idles smoothly. I would like to know before the check engine light comes on.
Thanks for any extra thoughts on this,
Pat

I am still trying to understand how you can tell from the way the car runs as to whether this needs changing, cleaning or what. Sounds like to me this generally will either be fine or just need cleaning, but I am just not sure how to tell it needs either from how the car runs.
Thanks,

" My engine idles rough and oscillates badly when either in drive or a/c on in drive; when in neutral, it idles smoothly. I would like to know before the check engine light comes on. "
Our '08 sedan has done this since new . Replaced the P.C.V. at around 20,000 miles and no difference . Still idles rough when in gear at stops or idling . Fine when in neutral or park . The car now close to 58,000 miles .

Did your PCV really need replacing at that point?

Thought it might help with the rough idle . No difference . Not all that expensive or difficult to replace .

Checked mine. Have about 90500 miles on the odometer. Wasn't clogged, rattled freely. Cleaned it off anyway and put it back in.

Thinking about checking mine tomorrow as well. Must be a fad.

lol. One of the bigger things right now on YW, I guess. Since everyone was talking about theirs, and since it's such an easy thing to check and clean, I just thought, "might as well." Also wanted to see the condition of mine after 90,500 miles.
