Soooo I thought I heard a rattle in my engine and I lifted the hood and got a friend to rev my engine a little to figure out what was rattling, and to my surprise I heard a lot of air sucking noises....almost like someone had installed a turbo overnight  It sounds like a pop off valve when revving from idle , but doesn't make a noise while revving from a rev.....
I had a good look at the hoses visible and felt around and nothing could be felt or seen...... It sounds like its either coming from inside the engine or the part where the air filter box meets the engine.

so, please....
someone explain what this noise could be?
Do I need a new air filter? (havnt changed in 6 months or so..)
Is a vacuum hose loose?

watttttttt?

Yup, totally normal AFAICT.
You should get that filter cleaned regardless. A lot of dirt can accumulate in 6 months.

It sounds rough. It could be a lot of things. Check the PCV valve and hoses. Run a good fuel system cleaner.

Worst case, it could be a burnt valve.

That car sounds sick in the video, sounds like a diesel, i'd get it checked out by a mechanic before putting too many more miles on it,could be something minor or could be more serious and it doesnt sound normal to me..:iono:

Let us know if it was a normal noise or what was the problem,if there is no problem i might have an issue with my car running too quiet:biggrin:

I took it to my mechanic and he said all was fine... it was normal sounding.... just with a sudden rev you can hear the suction more than you can with a normal rev.

:) so.... NEVERMIND!

How about a second opinion? If you say that it's louder than usual, then it might be something.

I have a CAI on my Jeep that makes loud sucking and whistling sounds when I gas it. I actually like it - makes it sound like a turbo or SC. It's the air rushing past the butterfly valve in the throttle body. The smaller the gap between the valve and the wall of the TB the louder the sound is, so it's only really loud when revving up from a low idle or gassing it to get some quick speed.

I don't think it's a problem for your Yaris, but check your air filter just to make sure it's not clogged and choking the engine a bit. It may also be that some gunk has accumulated around the valve in the TB "roughing up" the air as it moves past so a quick look in the TB to see if it needs cleaning would be something to check as well.

Thanks guys, I'll check it out when I change the air filter.

Is it pretty easy to look inside the Throttle Body??
