At the very least, you need to change the cover that goes over the airbag. Toyota doesn't sell the cover separately, but I've noticed that some ebay sellers offer the cover. Also, in regions where steering wheel controls are not an available option, the spiral cable (aka clockspring) needs to be changed to the one that has the three extra wires for the steering wheel controls.

Why would I have to change, the cover? I mean what things will I have to buy? Do you know the estimated cost in Dollar's?

Here is an ebay listing for a US one which doesn't support the steering wheel controls (just as an example). There isn't a part number for it, separate from the airbag. Try doing a search of ebay for your area searching for "Yaris airbag cover".

^Nah man, Can't get the original one. I'm getting one but it's for a Vitz (Yaris hatchback) the dashboard design is different as compared to the one I have on my Belta.

It's an original OEM leather stiched multi-function steering wheel, it costs around 22,000PKR, which equal's to about $250-260. Here is a picture of it.

Is it from a Toyota Dealer? If you have a Part Number for it, it would be fantastic.........

@revolution no, it's not from a Toyota dealer. I'll try to get the part number.

What if I change my Steering wheel with the OEM one I've pictured above? Will it cause any type of problem? And can I change the Black plastic cover on the top, where the Toyota emblem is at? The reason is that the Steering wheel I am getting has a different pattern on it's plastic cover as compared to my Belta's.

i have the audio control standard installed from the factory
shouldn't be very hard to find steering wheel with controls

Changing the plastic cover can be done, but might be tricky/dangerous. The plastic cover is riveted on with four large rivets, so they would need to be drilled out.

there is no illumination of the controls but its not a big deal because you can use them very easily

Okay, but how should it be drilled out?

I personally wouldn't attempt it. Theoretically airbags are designed to withstand heat and vibration, but I think I would try to locate an airbag that fits the steering wheel first.

The Steering wheel I am getting already has a airbag, I need to change the cover's, here are a couple of picture's to show you what I am talking about:

Note the difference between the pattern's of the cover's.

So, are you thinking of trying to use the audio controls with your original cover (by trimming it to fit)?
Murtaza_murti
11-15-2010, 09:51 PM
Yes, beacause I can't seem to find the Steering wheel which has the Belta's trim's pattern on it.

That might just work, and you should be able to trim it without having to drill out the rivets, since the radio controls are separate pieces that mount to the steering wheel frame, rather than the airbag. This is what the underside looks like sans airbag.

I am saying that you may be able to cut the cover so that it fits with the controls, without taking the cover off of the airbag.

Maybe the airbag went off mid-cut?

Finally! After waiting forever, I finally got a hold of the required parts and got this done at last.
Required parts:
1. OEM airbag cover (for multi-function controls, also airbag cover for the Yaris hatchback and sedan is different. As both have a different texture on the cover).
2. OEM multi-function button/switch assy (now there are two types, left side controls have track up and down, volume up and down and MODE with the other side empty and the other one has all these features on the left with the Bluetooth/phone connectivity on the right with call end/receive and voice command). I got the one without the Bluetooth functions as my head-unit doesn't have a Bluetooth option.
For pictures of the button/switch assy, refer to post #30 on this page.
3. OEM clockspring which supports multi-function controls connection (I didn't need another clockspring, my audio guy made a harness and installed it with the original clockspring).
Also, there is this neat feature I didn't know existed. If you hold the MODE button for 2-3 seconds the head-unit turns OFF and when you hold it again it turns ON, I found this feature to be highly useful. It keeps you from diverting your attention whilst driving.
Here are some pictures of the parts and finished product, just have these crappy cell phone pictures for now. Will post detailed pictures later.

Original airbag cover and airbag assembly removed
54796
Old airbag cover (notice the difference between this one and the new one, you cannot fit the switches in the old one as there is no open space to do so)
54797
The airbag had to be removed from this old airbag cover into the new one. The airbag assembly is bolted on by steel rivets which have to be opened and then closed by a special tool which I didn't have. The guy whom I bought the parts told me he would do it, so I couriered it over to him.

Final product pictures, will post detailed images and a few video clips over the weekend.

That's an airbag cover for the Yaris hatchback. Do you have switches installed by any chance?
