So I am going to have a custom box built into the spare tire area. I have my option of a mephis audio shallow mount 10 or 12 both would fit he says. Both will cost me roughly 400 installed that includes the box wiring and sub im supplying my own amp.

Which do you think would sound better. for the size of the car and the air space in the trunk.

if theyll both fit the same get the 12...quite simply so long as you can power it properly

12" if you like deeper longer sounding bass, and 10" if you listen more to short, fast sound bass IMO. Im getting a 12" sub that is already in an enclosure. I can't wait till I install the amp for it. Ill let you know how it sounds.

Wow...what a waste of space! Holy crap! How many cubes is that?

...that sounds trollish, but it REALLY isn't. I promise.

I'd like to hear what that sounds like... And i'm betting around 3.5-4 cu ft of airspace. Deff enough to cut a square hole in the front of it and slap a Solo-baric 15 in there and knock the trunk off it's hinges.

Looks to me like he has TWO of those subs in that box.

( from looking at both pics )

And the box is ported. Those look like 12's ?

Since those subs are on opposite walls, are they wired for PUSH-PULL?

( or do you have internal walls between them? )

Interesting setup.
I think I would pass on the window decals though... don't like advertising to thieves.

 I never thought about that! very clever.

You could put 4 solobaric 15"s in 4 sealed cubes! Can you imagine that?

thats an old audio myth... the size of the sub has nothing to do "fast" or "slow" bass. The motor (voice coil and magnet) are what determines that... also the configuration of the box has a big (VERY BIG) effect on the so called speed of the sound.

the best I can do to explain this without getting long winded and technical is to say that the 12" for deep, and a 10" for fast is like saying small cars are slow and big cars are fast. No.. it determines on the engine, high HP & decent torque is what will determine if a car is fast... that along with the relative power to weight ratio.

I wish I had everybody here, a few hours with a saw, and an 8" & 15" sub... i'd make boxes that make the 8" sound boomy/slow and the 15" tight/fast.

Hey...Let ME take care of the fast 15s! I've got two waiting for the enclosures to be fabbed. We're doing a cube and a half sealed on each of the two ID 15s. Something tells me I'll have an excellent sound from them.

You mention before that your boxes were going to be vented? is that the plan? if so, is the volume inside the vents included in the area? I can't wait to see how you are going to layout your amps and woofers, I'm hitting my head on the wall thinking about it, in other words I don't know where I'm going to install my amps :iono:

i'd assume 1.5cuft each sealed.... you got 2-3bands of eq in the sub 60hz range?

I've got dual 1/3 octaves for the right and left off the source. No worries about control. Yes they will be sealed, I can completely sympathise with the banging of the head against the wall thought. We WERE contemplating the sealed idea, but I nixed that with the space requirements for the frequency range and placement we wanted of the woofers. We also changed amplifiers so I'll ONLY be working with 1000 Watts at maximum for two 15 inch woofers. Oh bummer.

I wish, I think I'm in the 450 Watts for three 10 inch woofers. "We all want more, and MORE" Can't stop

i'm happy with my 160rms & dual 8's. They get plenty loud for everything short of being abnoxious... just wish I had my deck & speakers in.... then I could actually turn the volume up on the subs without it sounding weird. The stock deck & speakers just aren't cutting it.

In the past I've ran some of the following systems...

2 15's+100rms in a wall of an econoline van (tuned to 58hz) did 147dB
single 12" ported with 2400 rms (tuned to 45hz) did 144dB... wish I had more power
Single 15" ported with 800rms (tuned to 45hz) best I got was around 142dB... couldn't keep the deck from skipping tho.

But my favorite sounding install in one of my cars was a single 12" sealed in 1cuft with 400rms.
Funniest sub install I've ever worked on was eight 8" subs with 150rms... Box was made using 1.5" MDF(single sheet) and covered in LineX... box was probably bullet proof (i'm not joking). Thing got loud.. and only with 150rms. Did 141dB

The next closest for fun install was when I helped my friend put an 18" RE XXX in a wall in his civic hatch + 4 batteries + 280amp @ 15volt alternator, + 4,000 watts rms. That was a cool setup that would knock your ears off. Did 149dB

I've been loud... but loud systems piss me off unless the frequency response is fairly flat (which is isn't 95% of the time).
