Yaris paint

Hello: I'm new to this forum and my 2010 Yaris is my first Toyota. I purchased it last December and I'm concerned about the paint. I've never owned a car that the paint scratched off of so easily. In the past I've occasionally had something put a small dent in a door or fender of one of my cars without scratching the paint at all. With the Yaris (it's red) the paint scratches off to the primer without being hit hard enough to even leave a dent. There are already several places where I can see the white undercoat and I have no idea what or when something came into contact with the body...unless it's from stones or something. I was wondering if anyone else has had problems with the paint coming off so easily.

Yes, the paint is a common issue . I have the same problem and worse, since the paint is completely scratched to the metal in some places, probably when people try to park their cars next to mine.

I hear what you're asking, but pretty much all cars have similar paint jobs with the exception of high end luxury-which use several layers of paint to get the depth. Paint quality has changed a lot over the years primarily due to environmental regulations. Therefore, they're not as durable/thick, but they sure do shine a lot better than they did 20 years ago. Just keep it waxed and touch up chips and scratches as they show up. I get small chips from rocks in the hood and front bumper-mostly due to it's angle or flat side alowing a hard impact. I've noticed people complaining about the paint quality of the Honda fit too, but I think it's mostly due to the slope of it's hood allowing more to hit it than their last car did. Smart fourtwo cars are also seeing a lot of paint chips in the hood/front bumper area-and they are made out of flexible plastic. It's all in the slope of impact.

My paint seems to be holding up fine. A little over 50,000 miles and the car is almost 3 years old, and I only have a few tiny scratches in the hood. The bumper is riddled with chips, but the plastic is silver all the way through. I don't think 20 bucks of touch up paint every couple of years is that bad.

I blame the government for not sweeping the freeways as much as they need to, as much as I blame the EPA for weakening the paint. There pretty much isn't a safe place to pull over on most freeways I drive as there are random car parts, retread, 2x4s, rocks, and misc debris almost filling the entire shoulder. Any vehicle that is lifted without mud guards coming down to at least the axle is third on my list.

Guess I've been lucky so far. Not a single scratch or ding anywhere on my Bayou Blue, just about 3 chips on the nose area where a rock got past my 3m film defenses.

Yes, the paint formulation has changed form what it was in past years.

For one thing, lead is no longer used in paint as it has been outlawed by most countries.
Lead gave automotive paint its " toughness"?

However, another problem is Toyta uses robots to paint as do most all auto maufactues these days. Robots allow a precise paint job that applies no more paint than nessary to achieve an even coat. In short, they use as little paint as practacle

In years past when it was done by hand, the painter woul err on the side of caution to get a good coat of paint.

As someone pointed out, if you want to get a heavy coat of pant on a car theses days be prepared to spend premium $s on a luxury model . The increased cost of the extra paint is one of the things factored into the higher prices.

I own a 2007 Yaris hatchback in absolute red. I'm having issues with my paint as well. My front end is peeling down to the white base coat. It looks as though someone took a water balloon, filled it with paint and chucked it at my car. I only have 38,000 miles on it and Toyota won't do anything about it since their warranty is only good for 36,000 miles. I've been given the run around by Toyota corporate to go see my dealer. Well after 3 people there looked at it and said it was a defective paint job, I was asked to go back again! You would think with all the PR issues that Toyota is having that they would try and make their car owners happy. Big Fail on Toyota's part :thumbdown:

You can put a clear bra on it or buy a le bra for the whole nose. Just keep the underneath of the bra clean and waxed, take it off every couple of weeks and clean the area. Otherwise invest in some touch up paint and keep on it with a good wax job.

Yes, the Yaris paint leaves much to be desired. The slightest touch leaves a mark.
I just filled 6 stone chips on the hood which were to the primer. All occurred during this past winter. That brings it up to about 12 repairs on the hood alone. Soon I'll need to have the hood sanded and repainted. Or just upgrade to carbon fibre.

Funny, just saw this thread. I was vacuuming my floor mats and I set them on the hood to make it easier to work on. When I was done the tiny amout of dirt that was on the bottom of the floor mats TOTALLY scratched up my hood. I did a turtle brazil wax job on it - since most paste wax has light clay in it to fill miro scratches. Its better but. Is there a good clay bar or wax for fixing the heavier clear coat scratches? This Clear coat scratches VERY easily, even plastic rubbing on it a tiny bit will ruin it :(

I have no real paint issues with my Yaris, outside of four tiny (BB size) rock chips. Touch-up paint fixed the rock chips just fine.

I worrie about the long term effects of the magnesium cloride they use in the winter has on the paint.

Garm sells a Canadian mkt hood deflector. I have it about a year now and it looks and protects quite well.:tongue:

Any difference in durability with paint color, or basic color vs. 'metallic'? My old Corolla has tough black paint that often gets scuffed, but seldom scratched through.

The clear coat on my car got all scuffed up when I scrubbed some bug spots a bit too hard with a cheap sponge... I haven't tried the scratchx yet - but I'm guessing that will help.

Is there any specific wax or polish that I can use to help protect the paint a bit better?

Hi everyone - I'm having the EXACT problem. I have '07 Red yaris hatchback. My whole front bumper is completely white. The dealership said someone has replaced my bumper when I got it fixed in the past. Believe me, the person who fixed my car did not have enough time to re-order a new bumper.....I've talk to Toyota Canada and the GM at my dealership and they still won't do anything but give me a discount on repainting it. Do you think it's worth talking to a lawyer? I do have a mechanic that would back me up on this.

The paint def sucks - my Yaris 2010 is just a bit over 2 months old - and after 6 days a week of commuting (250KMs a day) - the front is starting to show signs of wear - I am eagerly waiting 2 see what you guys are going to do - at some point I know I'm going to have to attempt a warranty claim

It seems it varies alot from car to car, I got 34k on my green sedan and the
paint is holding up very well, and I dont baby my car.
